GRAND HALL
"The Magnificent Fifty" by Susan Wilhoit

wilhoit watercolorSusan Wilhoit, a Tennessee native, offers a beautiful collection of American history at the CAC throughout July. Her nationally-recognized collection of watercolor paintings entitled "The Magnificent Fifty" is a precise, yet incredibly artful depiction of the nation's current 50 capitols. The exhibit will include 35 paintings of Eastern U.S. capitols, as well as four watercolors of the capitol buildings of California, Alaska, Hawaii and Wisconsin. Her work also has been displayed in the rotunda of the Nation's Capitol and will continue to travel across the United States. FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
Mixed Media by Mike Welch & Rose Marie Johnson
Welch and Johnson
Mike Welch and Rose Marie Johnson will collaborate to showcase an incredible display of variety and color this month in the Farmer's National Bank Gallery. Welch's collection will include not only his famous metal sculptures, but also his lesser known technique of pen and ink drawings featuring Danville landmarks and landscape. Rose Marie Johnson will also be showing a variety of art, ranging from sculptures and painted canvases to portraits.

LOCKHART GALLERY
Memorial Exhibit featuring Origami by Drew Stansbury

origamiDrew Stansbury, who passed away in 2006, was always fascinated with intricacy and figuring out the complex way things worked. Because of these passions, one of his favorite pasttimes was creating complicated, and often tiny, creations of origami. His collection at the CAC will display his immeasurable talent, many of the pieces ranging from contoured, unnatural shapes, to black cats and seemingly impossibly small cranes. In addition, origami books will be stationed at his exhibit for spectators to attempt their own origami and better appreciate Drew's work and talent.

SO YOU KNOW:
The CAC will host an opening reception for the July exhibits on Thursday, July 9 from 6-8 p.m. Join us to celebrate and meet this month's featured artists and preview their work. The reception is free and open to the public.

Included in the display was an incredible antique collection of brass band posters and other one-of-a-kind memorablia, provided by festival founder George Foreman. Among other June events was the popular Gallery Hop Stop and GABBF poster signing by artist-in-residence David Farmer, as well the following CAC highlights:

This year, for the first time, the CAC entered an exquisite table decked with artistic flair! Front & Center: Allison BaekerAllison Baeker
Allison Baeker, a rising junior at DePauw University and native of Danville, is working as an intern at the Community Arts Center this summer. Here's what she has to say about her experience at the CAC:

What brought you to the CAC?
The CAC is an amazing building and is a true gem in Danville. On my weekend visits home during the school year, I would occasionally be updated on the status of the CAC from my father and from there my interest in the facility grew. The CAC has incredible potential to be the highlight of Danville and I wanted to be a part of the growth and inspiration that this place could provide for the entire community. I knew that being a part of this work environment would give my summer vacation a real purpose with an exciting atmosphere.

What do you do as a summer intern at the CAC?
The majority of my tasks are very hands-on, mostly assisting Amy Wise with marketing and promotions. I assist in planning community events, help to write articles, update community and state websites with CAC events, and other various promotional tasks. The best part of the job is being able to attend events that took months to plan and witness how successful they are.

What will you take away from your CAC experience?
As an English literature major, working at the CAC has allowed me to take a realistic look at my goals both during and after my undergraduate career. The internship has forced me to reevaluate what I would like to do with my major and consider additional courses that will promote greater opportunities for me in the future. I have also regained an intense appreciation for my hometown, one that I am convinced will remain with me as I continue to grow.

Thanks for your great work, Allison! We appreciate all of your efforts...
