June Exhibits
FIRST & SECOND LEVEL GALLERIES "Celebrating 20 Years of the Great American Brass Band Festival"
The CAC will celebrate twenty years of the Great American Brass Band Festival with a month-long exhibit that presents a unique collection scanning two decades of brass band memories and one-of-a-kind memorabilia. Included in the display is an incredible antique collection of brass band posters and other memorablia, provided by festival founder, George Foreman.
Also among the montage of memorabilia, is a showcase that celebrates the artists in our community that have created artwork for past festival posters. Several original paintings by local artists that inspired commemorative poster designs are on display in the Lockhart Gallery. Among the works shown are original paintings by Wayne Daugherty, John Dixon, Paul Sirimongkhon, and the 2009 commissioned poster artist David Farmer, whose oil painting captures the vibrant essence of the festival with a striking montage of various festival scenes.
Additionally, a collection in the Farmer's National Bank Gallery displays twenty years of GABBF commemorative posters, quilts made from past festival t-shirts and other unique pieces and photographs donated by brass band enthusiasts. We hope the community, and visitors to the festival, will join us as we celebrate twenty years of this remarkable event. The festival has provided a positive impact on our community, especially in terms of highlighting the arts - obviously, a passion we share here at the CAC.
For more on this exhibit and other GABBF activites, visit: www.GABBF.org. SO YOU KNOW:The CAC will host an opening reception for the exhibit on Friday, June 12 from 6-9 p.m. during the downtown Gallery Hop Stop. Commissioned artist David Farmer also will be on hand to sign a limited number of commemorative festival posters.

| CAC Artist-in-Residence David Farmer creates 2009 Commemorative GABBF Poster
What was your inspiration for this year's poster design?
I have always been excited and inspired by the color and music of the festival. These intangible elements combined with the gaiety of the flowing crowds create a tremendous energy and excitement that is contagious and transforms into a more than ordinary moment of awareness. Painting is one means of capturing that energy. Discuss the process by which you created the poster:
I reviewed two years of festival photos taken by my wife and others to sketch about 100 images that I thought would form a striking harmonious montage depicting the essence of the festival. My main intent was to emphasize the Danville venues of activity. An interesting side note: all of the final painting was done during the week of the ice storm. There was no electricity at my home, so I worked in the CAC studio at night while listening to WHIR's reporting on the storm. So, now, whenever I look at the final poster, I can't help but hear Charlie Perry's voice and think of those cold, dark nights in the CAC studio. The color and gaiety of the painting contrast greatly with the circumstances of its final creation. Tell us about your artistic interpretation of the festival and the medium you selected to portray this in your piece.I consider the festival to be about the carnival atmosphere and the people, as much as the music -- the extraordinary goodwill, and excitement that pervades the town. People smile more that weekend and there is an intimation of just how good life can sometimes be. The medium was oil on canvas. SO YOU KNOW: David Farmer will unveil his artwork during the Gallery Hop Stop and June Artist Reception at the CAC, Friday, June 12, 6-9 p.m. The artist also will be on hand to sign a limited number of comemmorative GABBF posters during the event. Fifty signed posters will be available ($35 each), in addition to those unsigned, at $15 per poster.

Front & Center: Lynda Ross
Lynda Ross will take post as president of the CAC Arts Ambassador volunteer organization during the coming year. She and her husband Richard moved to Danville from Rhode Island in 2008. Welcome, Lynda!
What attracted you to work as a volunteer at the CAC?
We discovered Danville in 2006 and visited often as we searched for our new home, always including stops at the Community Arts Center. At that time, I thought it was just an impressive gallery space featuring local artists. Now, I know it is so much more. Once we were settled, it was a personal goal to identify volunteer opportunities with local organizations, to support the community and to make new friends. My professional and educational background is in librarianship, but I also studied art and art history. One meeting at the Community Arts Center with this great group called Arts Ambassadors and I knew I had struck gold. What type of activities will the Arts Ambassadors be doing in the coming year?
There is always something going on at the Community Arts Center... and we are always recruiting new volunteers with enthusiasm for the arts! Specifically, the Arts Ambassadors will be a welcoming presence at the many art receptions and other arts events offered throughout the year. In addition, we will assist with outreach programs, children's activities, and the multitude of arts offerings presented at the CAC for all age groups. I know I can count on the Arts Ambassadors to lend a hand. Certainly we can be an organized, effective support group and have fun at the same time... join us! Do you have a message you'd like to convey to those interested in becoming a volunteer at the CAC?
When I met the other Arts Ambassadors I was amazed to find individuals with very diverse backgrounds. Some, like me, were new to Danville having relocated from other states. Others have a long history and knowledge of the area. What we all have in common is a love and appreciation for the arts and a desire to see the Community Arts Center thrive. Sharing one's time and talents with like-minded friends benefits each member, the CAC, and the community as a whole. It's a win, win, win. If you are interested in becoming an Arts Ambassadors, a group of volunteers devoted to assisting the mission and work of the CAC, e-mail or contact us at 236-4054. The group meets every 4th Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, June 24.
Also thanks to outgoing president, Cathie Celestri! We appreciate all of your efforts... |
