Our Family Literacy Program Rewrites Lives
When Maria Garcia, now a 49-year-old single mom, emigrated to the U.S. from Colombia in the 1990s, she was fleeing a culture of drug traffickers and violence, yearning for a stable life in the U.S. and new job opportunities. When she arrived here, she worked as a cleaner, knowing that she was capable of so much more. The language barrier made her feel "defense- less and frustrated." But she had no time or money to pay for English lessons.Through The Child Center's new Family Literacy Program, she and her seven-year-old son, Michael Prieto, have finally begun a new chapter in their lives.
"I always wanted to go to school but never had the money for it. This was the first time I knew I could take a free class. Michael is my only child and I wanted to be able to communicate better with him, to help him with his homework. Since it is a family-based program, it has helped me and my son learn together, to communicate with each other better, and for him to improve his reading and writing skills. This class has made me realize that anything is possible. It's the first step toward reaching my goal of finding a better job and being the best mother I can be. Michael's favorite part of the program is homework help. He talks about how if he doesn't learn his English better now, he is not going to succeed as an adult...his dream is to become a doctor."
The Family Literacy Program is a free citywide program developed by the NYC DYCD (Department of Youth and Community Development) with a unique model that brings parents and children together once a week and works with both children and adults separately three additional days-a-week. Thanks to a grant from the DYCD, The Child Center opened its first center this past October in Elmhurst, an area with a diverse population and an overwhelming need for English-speaking skills.
