A Backpack Represents a Fresh Start A backpack filled with new supplies may seem like a small thing in terms of getting a kid on track...but it can make a huge difference for a child whose parents don't have the capacity to provide these basic tools. Children take pride in coming to school equipped and prepared, and their confidence leads to new receptivity toward learning. This is the story of one of the 15,000 children we serve every year...
How can a child who missed 100 days of school last year become a fulfilled, productive student?
Last year, Jorge, a fifth grader at our Trude Weishaupt Center was referred to The Child Center by the Administration for Children's Services (ACS), the city agency responsible for investigating child neglect reports. His father had a history of severe mental illness and his mother was the victim of domestic violence. When he first arrived at The Child Center, he ran and hid under the table to avoid talking to his therapist. During subsequent months, Child Center therapists were able to understand the real reason that Jorge, a child of above average intelligence, was skipping school so often. He was afraid to leave his mom alone with his dad. Read more about Jorge's story

High Water Women and Astoria Federal Savings Bring Renewed Hope
Much needed backpacks filled with school supplies were delivered to 350 Child Center children in need by the High Water women, a group of 2,000 hedge fund managers and other senior members of the financial services industry, and the team at Astoria Federal Savings. High Water (some of their volunteers pictured above) has donated these essential supplies for the fifth year in a row and Astoria Federal for the tenth year. We thank them for their generosity and continued devotion to this cause. The backpacks provide a sense of pride and motivation for at-risk children to attend school, and give them the important feeling of belonging. These positive feelings can lead to increased attendance, learning and productivity. Read more about what the Backpack Drive means to these corporate donors.

Ray Cook Memorial Golf Outing Raises Much Needed Funds
Rain had been predicted, but the sun shone through on September 21st as Child Center supporters gathered for a day of golf, schmoozing and fundraising at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. Co-chairs Gary Arcieri, John Cook (pictured at right with guest) and Gary Tabackman were tireless in their efforts to bring in supporters. The day ended with cocktails and dinner where Vice President Hank Auffarth announced trophy, raffle and Jet Blue Challenge winners. Generous donations to our Sponsor a Child Campaign raised an additional $24,000. We thank all our supporters and hope to see you again next year. For those of you who could not make it, join us for a great day and a great cause next September.

JP Morgan Chase Renews Grant
For the second year in a row, JP Morgan Chase Global Philanthropy has chosen to fund The Child Center's after school program at Community School JHS 185. The program reaches 225 underserved junior high school youth. Without such programs. children are often left to fend for themselves. The Child Center's JHS 185 program not only provides care and support but much needed educational enrichment, cultural exposure and fun. With JP Morgan funding we hope to expand the program to early evenings and Saturdays.
With funds diminishing, The Child Center needs your support more than ever. If you think your company would be interested in a sponsorship opportunity, please contact Sandra Hagan, Executive Director at 718-651-7770 X211 or sandrahagan@childcenterny.org.
