BACKPACK DRIVE
School is starting and children need backpacks again!
Make sure that community children have the backpacks filled with the supplies they need to succeed at school. One contribution of $50 makes sure a child whose familiy is struggling with the costs will be going back to school with the tools they need to be prepared to learn. We thank the Highwater Women for their donation of 300 backbacks this year and the Astoria Federal Savings Bank, celebrating their tenth year of backpack and supply contributions.

Please contact Chris Colica at 718-651-7770 X300 or chriscolica@childcenterny.org to find out how you can provide school supplies to children at risk now.

Campers and Counselors Celebrate "Mismatch Day" at The Child Center's
Beacon Summer Camps

Making memories, forming friendships, building team skills, exploring the
outdoors, and finding a safe place to have fun. What would summer be without day camp? For most middle class children, camp is a natural part of summer, but for so many at-risk kids in our communities, the option is not viable unless the costs are underwritten. This summer,  The Child Center of NY brought over 1,000 neighborhood children the thrill of summer camp at seven sites. The camps ran from July 6-August 21st and served mostly 6-13-year-olds. Costs were primarily underwritten by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).

"
Without The Child Center," says Doreen Teh, The Child Center's Associate Director of Youth Development, "students would fall into potentially damaging situations on the streets." The camps are free and are offered at public schools and Beacon community centers throughout Queens. Activities included soccer, football, chess, drama, bowling, day trips, music appreciation and step dance. Despite additional funds from DYCD this year the camps were stretched to the maximum--serving  more than 300 children beyond their expected enrollment and the sites continued to have waiting lists throughout the summer.  Read more

Summer Camp Changes Lives
Profile of a camper:

Tyrone is a third grader who began traveling to The Child Center's after school programs during the school year from the South Bronx where he lived with his ailing mother. His  grandmother lived near one of the schools where The Child Center's programs were taking place and arranged for him to participate, despite his 1 1/2 hour commute each way.

Two hundred free ice cream cones were the highlight of a summer camp festival at P.S. 56. They were delivered by 18-year-old Daniel's parents, (who have an ice cream truck), and who provided the treats as a way of thanking The Child Center for Daniel's new found sense of purpose, responsibility and confidence, through his work as a summer camp counselor. New Grants for the New Fiscal Year

We gratefully acknowledge the corporate/foundation grants that have been announced since July 1, the beginning of our fiscal year. These grants enable us to expand and reinforce existing, life-enhancing programming.

Astoria Federal Savings  in support of our Early Head Start at the Macari Family Center in Flushing.  Astoria Federal Savings has supported The Child Center for over twenty years, including program grants and in-kind donations through their back-to-school backpack program.  Special thanks to Carolyn Fostel, Vice President at Astoria.

Hedge Funds Care has renewed their support of the Hedge Funds Care Preventive Project, a child abuse prevention program at the Asian Outreach Program.  Hedge Funds Care has supported The Child Center since 2002.

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (FAPC) renewed funding for our Teen Impact Prevention Program (TIPP)'s collaboration with First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica.  We are very grateful to our board member/VP of Programs, Wendy Schildwachter, for introducing us to the Benevolence Committee of this Manhattan church.

chessDYCD (Department of Youth and Community Development) funded a new Beacon at  P.S./ M.S, 43 in Far Rockaway. With the awarding of this Beacon contract, The Child Center will expand its presence in one of the neediest communities in Queens.

A Grant that Makes a Difference Now and Into the Future
What does it take for a nonprofit agency like The Child Center to maintain its optimum commitment to the children and young adults it serves? Every year, The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) chooses a handful of organizations that serve youth, to assist in strengthening their capacity to continue their vital missions. This year, The Child Center was one of five organizations chosen from a group of 10 who applied from a pool of 30 organizations deemed eligible because of the impact of their services on children and youth across the City.  The organizations are fortunate to receive capacity building technical assistance funded by DYCD and the Wallace Foundation. The goal is to strengthen the agency's core so that it can contribute to be a leader in providing effective programming to the community's most at-risk children and youth. Read More
