SUMMERTIME!
We hope this has been a great summer for you all! A perfect time to sit, read, think and grow! Once again, we're offering choices for our August recommended reading. This month we share about one book and a selections from the recently released TIP report.
The Slave Next Door: Human Trafficking and Slavery in America Today by Kevin Bayles and Ron Soodlater. These two authors expose the disturbing phenomenon of human trafficking and slavery that exists now in the United States. In The Slave Next Door they present that there are slaves are all around us, hidden in plain sight. The book shares the stories of these slaves as well as those of some least-expected slaveholders. Weaving together a wealth of voices--from slaves, slaveholders, and traffickers as well as from experts, counselors, law enforcement officers, rescue and support groups, and others--this book is also a call to action, telling what we, as private citizens, can do to finally bring an end to this horrific crime. Available in paperback and e-book.
Each year the US Department of State publishes the Trafficking In Persons (TIP) Report, which attempts to document the current state of human trafficking on a country-by-country basis. You might think "Oh no! A GOVERNMENT document!!" And it IS quite a tome, but they've done a rather good job at making at least PARTS of it fairly readable. Here are links to a few sections that are worth investigating:
We'd love to hear YOUR thoughts as you read through the items on our July and August summer reading lists! Drop us an email or (better yet) post your comments on our Facebook page! |

Quote of the month
"The voices of survivors -- whether calling from the past or ringing out in a courtroom in 2012 -- are a sad reminder that the struggle against modern-day slavery is a long fight still not won. They are a reminder that if governments shirk their responsibility to bring traffickers to justice and to help victims on their road to recovery, the intolerable yoke of modern-day slavery will persist. As we strive to deliver on the promise of freedom, let us vow together that survivors' stories will not be forgotten and that their lessons will guide us forward."
~ Luis CdeBaca, Ambassador-at-Large, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking In Persons (2009-present) included within the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, June 2012

The Last Word... Greetings!
Over the years we have discovered a consistent theme for people in all cultures ~ they treasure relationships and they value family. Last month we spoke of the anticipated visit from our daughter, son-in-love,and two incredibly cute grandchildren! Being the relational people we are (and playing that "Grandmommy and Bapa" card!), we'd love to give you a peek into the family WE value!
For a number of days we had four generations with us, thoroughly enjoying this relational time! Diana and Lennon along with Lydia (7) and Jackson (4) have recently relocated from Nevada to Seattle, so visiting Upstate NY provided some NEW experiences for the grandchildren. We made the most of the pooltime,
butterfly observations at The Strong Museum of Play,

oodles of reading and playing time,
feeding the ducks along the canal,
and magical evenings of sparklers!

Now that we've given you a shameless glimpse at OUR summer memories, we'd like to encourage you ~ Make certain that YOU enjoy making memories during "those lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer"!
