Artisan Work
Tonia
Made in Honduras
Our featured artisan this month is Tonia, from the "Made in Honduras Craft Cooperative".
Tonia makes exquisite jewelry out of coconut shell. She has recently added a coconut shell bracelet to her offerings. We have been encouraging her to incorporate native seeds into her designs. The result has been jewelry that truly captures the "flavor" of Honduras. More recently she has begun creating jewelry using guanacaste seeds.
Each guanacaste seed is a chocolate-brown, marked with a conspicuous light orange ring on either side. The seeds are quite hard, resembling small stones rather than tree seeds.

SUMMERTIME!
Summer is a great time to relax and unwind a bit - AND a great time to do a little reading! As we've done for the past couple of years, we're offering our recommended reading list. This month we have two books and a website to suggest.
Nightmare Along the River Nile: Abducted by the LRA by Suzanna E Nelson (2010). Although this story of 20th century slavery is historical fiction, the background against which it is set is all too real. We both found it riveting! Click for a book review. Available in paperback and e-book.
A Walk in My Shoes: Our Lives of Hope by Diane Karper. Diane has compiled the oral histories of the artisans that are part of the Made in Honduras Craft Cooperative. KVI's Honduran products (sling bags, coconut, calabash, sea glass jewelry, and more) are made by these artisans. Their stories will give you a deeper appreciation for their craftsmanship. Click for a book review. Available in paperback only.
Pledging a second year of involvement, CNN Freedom Project continues in the fight to end modern-day slavery and shines a spotlight on the horrors of slavery in the 21st century - amplifying the voices of the victims, highlighting success stories, and helping to unravel the complicated tangle of criminal enterprises trading in human life. There are frequent postings so you will need to check in once or twice a week (or follow them on Facebook or Twitter)!
We'd love to hear YOUR thoughts as you read through the items on our summer reading list! Drop us an email or (better yet) post your comments on our Facebook page! |

Quote of the month
"Travel is more than the seeing of sights;
it is a change that goes on,
deep and permanent, in the ideas of living."

Monthly Specials!
This month we are launching a new KVI "monthly specials" program! Would you like to be "in the know" about these specials? We've created a new mailing list ESPECIALLY to announce them. However, you MUST "opt-in" to this list in order to start receiving the mailing; nobody will be automatically added to the list. Sign up now and receive our "monthly specials" announcement mid-month!
In order to "opt-in", click HERE. If you already subscribe to the newsletter, you'll be sent instructions on how to update your preferences. When you do, check the "Monthly Specials" box {the one for The (ad)Venture will already be checked}. If you AREN'T already subscribed, you'll go to a screen that will allow you do subscribe to BOTH (which we hope you will).
As our "Thank You" for joining either (or both) lists, we'll send you a code good for 15% off your next order from our website!
Of course, as always we promise NEVER to sell (or GIVE) your contact information to anyone.
So, let's get started on this journey! |
The Last Word... Greetings!
Here at Kingdom Ventures we're "slowing it down" a tad in order to enjoy some Summer AND to "beat the heat" with some dips in the pool. Unlike past years, we aren't heading out of town to do trade shows - in fact, we're eagerly anticipating a visit from our grandchildren. (Yes, daughter and son-in-love, you're welcome too!)
But things are certainly NOT at a standstill! The annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in DC began this past week and runs through July 8th. A number of our products from STOPstart in Cambodia will be available in the their Marketplace tent, along with selections of our artisans' jewelry from both Honduras and Kenya. (We, however, will NOT be in attendance!) We're believing for a complete "sell-out" of our products at this event!
If you missed seeing us at Festival on the Green in Honeoye Falls in June, you get another chance this summer! This will be our 4th year at the Geneseo Rotary Summer Festival, coming up on Friday/Saturday, July 13-14. LOTS of activities for the entire family! Click for a festival schedule.
And if you need something to 'sweeten the pot', the Geneseo Airshow occurs that same weekend. You can get 'up close and personal' with the planes down on the airstrip, but it's also great to see them as they fly right over Geneseo and the park!

So enjoy "those lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer"!
