Small Business Saturday

Never heard of it? Us too - until a few days ago. It's a new program to encourage people to buy from their local small businesses. One BIG incentive is that American Express is giving a $25 credit on "registered eligible cards". Here's a link to learn more. (KVI is a participating merchant!) |

Greetings!

Open for Business!
It's hard to believe, but November is here! The last weeks of October were a blur ~ we've been "on the road again!"

We had a delightful visit with our daughter Diana, her husband Lennon and our grandkids (and they ARE grand!) Lydia (6) and Jackson (3) in Nevada followed by our participation in the 3rd Annual Global Forum on Human Trafficking in CA. We returned home with just eight days to turn an empty storefront into our International Marketplace. But we DID it!!!
If you live in the Greater Rochester area, we invite you to stop in at the store. We have all of our products from Cambodia, Kenya, Thailand, Turkey Nicaragua and Honduras available for you to experience and shop! Additionally, through our connections at the Fair Trade Federation, we have added select products such as scarves from India, musical instruments from Peru and Ecuador, fingerpuppets and coin purses from Guatemala, and bracelets from Chile to round out our offerings within our holiday shop setting. Of course if you AREN'T near to our store, you can STILL "Make a Difference" by shopping for your holiday gifts on our website!
New items have been arriving throughout these past few weeks. We have JUST received our order of pine needle baskets (and trivets!) from Fuente de Pino of Nicaragua in a whole host of colors! And our STOPstart order, bringing fresh product from Cambodia our way, is due to arrive within the week!
Thank you for joining us on this adventure of making a difference in the lives of others!

Quote of the month
"The application process
...really made us examine our principles and operation...
We are so wrapped up in the many things we do every day
that sometimes we forget that people may not have a real sense
of what it is that we are so passionate about
and why we are doing it."

Occupy Greece!
Well, not exactly in the new "traditional" sense, but KVI's International Marketplace IS open in our new Greece location!
On Monday October 24th at noon we opened the door to our empty shop. With only eight days until our "grand opening", it took a much "vision", many mini-experiments at placement and arranging, and oodles of trips in the van to transform this empty space into...

...THIS Marketplace!
In addition to products from our six "regular" countries, we've worked with some of our fellow Fair Trade wholesalers to stock products from India, Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala, and El Salvador. We also have Fair Trade coffee for sampling and purchase from Colombia and Rwanda (courtesy of our friends at Joe Bean Roasters) and a delectable selection of Equal Exchange chocolate that you can sample and buy.
So if you're in the Rochester area, c'mon over! We're less than a mile west from the Ridgeway Ave exit of I-390. We are located in Erie Canal Commons at 2542 Ridgeway Ave 14626, snuggly fit between DiBella's Subs and the bridal shop. Look for the red "GIFTS" sign above the shop AND our KVI signage in our shop windows. For those of you who prefer maps and pictures, click the icon to find us on Yelp.

The Third Annual Global Forum on Human Trafficking was held in this past month on the campus of Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale, CA. This year's theme was "Freedom meets Innovation" (it WAS in Silicon Valley, after all) with innovative approaches to combating trafficking taking center stage throughout the two days. The first indication was the lack of paper handouts. A schedule was printed on our attendee badges, but everything else was online. And in a sea of tablets and smartphones, our laptops were obviously SO 20th century!
Speakers ranged from Mike McCarthy of CNN (be sure to continue to view the CNN Freedom Project on a regular basis) and Douglas Alexander (MP and Britain's Shadow Foreign Secretary) to Mira Sorvino (make certain to see her soon-to-be-released film "Trade of Innocents") and Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York). We spent Friday taking an assessment of the state of the abolition movement, but Saturday was devoted to action steps.
One action step that we're planning to take is to get a VERY impressive piece of technology that made its debut -- the second release of the Free2Work app for the iPhone and Android operating systems. Download this app and you can scan the barcode on over 10,000 products ranging from clothes to cars and get a "grade" on how ethical that company's supply chain is. Imagine having the knowledge to "vote" with your dollars for ethically-sourced products! It helped US decide to (finally) get smartphones the next time we replace phones!
All of us departed from the conference with a renewed dedication to the vision that slavery CAN be abolished in our lifetimes. It's a difficult fight, but one that CAN be won!
Of course "The Movement" is not about celebrities - it's about people and relationships! The evening before the Forum we had dinner with Joe Conway, STOPstart Operations Manager - the first time we'd been able to meet face-to-face.
We were also able to enjoy the company of Jiji Rentsch who we had met in Cambodia in 2006. She and her husband now work in El Salvador where she has a goal of starting community-based workshops sewing "active-wear" from excess materials otherwise thrown away by apparel-makers. |

Baskets!! We got BASKETS!!!
Our latest order of pine needle baskets from Fuente de Pino of Nicaragua has at long-last arrived! Our dear friends from the mountains outside of El Sauce have done a tremendous job of filling the largest order they've ever received despite terrible rain and flooding. We were told that the streams were so badly flooded that Franklin's intrepid Toyota pickup almost flipped over in one of them. The baskets, as well as a new line of trivets and ornaments, are all available to be ordered off the website now, despite the fact that we haven't even had time to shoot pictures of the new colors or products. Pictures should be posted this weekend. If you are in the Rochester area, simply stop into our holiday shop and experience all of them!!! |
