The (ad)Venture September 2011
|
Greetings!
" | | Rebecca & Glenn Fadner |
All Good Things Must End...
And so it is with summer. It's hard to believe September is upon us. Our granddaughter Lydia returned to school ("First Grade, Bapa!") three weeks ago. My, how the time flies!!
With only a few outdoor shows remaining (Greentopia Festival at High Falls in Rochester and RWC's homecoming), we look forward with anticipation to the upcoming holiday season. The excitement is beginning to build!
Remembering that our objective is to bring economic empowerment through the sale of our artisan's products, we're busy restocking our "shelves" here at KVI. STOPstart of Cambodia is busily fulfilling one of their largest orders ever from us. We expect a delivery date in mid-to-late October. Furthermore, we just received a shipment of products from Made in Honduras, including new styles of jewelry from coconut shell, as well as seaglass, and calabash. The women of Fuente de Pino in Nicaragua are diligently working on our fall order of pine needle baskets as well as a few new products. We are looking with expectancy at their "new colors for fall and holiday season." And in just a few more weeks, we'll have new patterns of placemats from Asian Threads of Thailand on the site!
Can YOU feel the anticipation growing??? Join with us!!!

Quote of the month
"Trade should promote fair compensation, safe & healthy conditions, long-term relationships, transparent business practices, and
workplaces free from discrimination and forced child labor.
When trade encompasses these elements,
the lives of people and their communities improve."
~ Carmen K. Iezzi, former Fair Trade Federation executive director.

HOT off the presses!
On August 30th, we reached an agreement for renting space for our annual KVI International Marketplace! We don't have a signed lease yet, so we're not QUITE ready to divulge the address, but here's a hint... it's in GREECE, NY (not Gates, where we were located last year).
More news: This year we have our rental space for TWO months, rather than just one. So anticipate the launch of our Marketplace 2011 on Tuesday November 1st. Take note that our marketplace will be open through the end of December. More details, dates and hours will be announced in NEXT month's newsletter.
After studying the photo, do you think you recognize the space? Drop us an email and if you're correct, you might win a prize! (No prizes to those who've been TOLD where we were looking!) |
Free Trade is NOT FAIR Trade
How Does Fair Trade Differ From Free Trade?
(Document courtesy of Fair Trade Resource Network ~ www.FTRN.org)
Many people are familiar with the term "free trade," which has played a major role in countries' trade policies in the past few decades. While free trade policies need reform, Fair Trade adds a complementary business model to such trade reform. The table below summarizes key differences:
| | |
Free Trade |
Fair Trade | |
Main Goal: |
To increase nations' economic growth |
To empower marginalized people and improve the quality of their lives.
Focuses On: | Trade policies between countries |
Commerce among individuals and businesses
Primarily Benefits: | Multi-national corporations, powerful business interests |
Vulnerable farmers, artisans, and workers in less industrialized countries
Critics Say: | Punishing to marginalized people & the environment; sacrifices long-term |
Interferes with free market, inefficient, too small scale for impact
Major Actions: | Countries lower tariffs, quotas, labor, and environmental standards |
Businesses offer producers favorable financing, long-term relationships, minimum prices, and higher labor and environmental standards
Producer Compensation Determined by: | Market and government policies |
Living wage and community improvement costs
Supply Chain: | Includes many parties between producer and consumer |
Includes fewer parties, more direct trade
Key Advocate Organizations: | World Trade Organization (WTO), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) |
Fair Trade Labeling Organization, World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) |
