On the Road - Again!

The Willy Nelson classic became our unofficial KVI theme song a couple years ago, and it's VERY appropriate as we look at 2011!

We spent early February at the Seattle Gift Show in Seattle, and by the time you read this we'll be in Nicaragua with our Fuente de Pino basket artisans. There will be MUCH more about that next month. We return home around the 11th, and out to the Boston Gift Show near the end the month!

But March is a busy month on other fronts! Recognizing that many of our artisans are women, we call to your attention the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day on March 8th. Another event Freedom Sunday occurs on March 13th. AND this month KVI celebrates a birthday ~ Kingdom Ventures is 6 years old!

Have a great month!

Simon & Alice Artisan Update

Last month we shared about the jewelry shipment from Simon and Alice (Alisim Glass Studio in Kenya) that had "gone missing". You may recall it was originally shipped on 12.24.10. It's been an "eventful" month on this front as well.

We've kept in frequent contact with Simon even while we were in Seattle. On Monday 02.07, my phone rang at 3:30 in the morning. (We were in Seattle - 3 hours earlier than home!) Simon had just been told that all the "held" packages (which had been forwarded from Kenya to Amsterdam) were being returned to Kenya and that he should have the returned package in about a week.

The week went by and then some, and still no shipment returned to Simon. Then this past Thursday (02.17) when UPS showed up to deliver another package, we discovered a VERY heavy carton was on OUR front porch. Yes, it was Simon's jewelry! We have no idea who brought it (the mail carrier always rings the bell), but it was there and intact! And we were able to get the payment off to Simon before we left for Nicaragua. MUCH rejoicing!

Happy Birthday... To US!

It's hard to believe, but this month, Kingdom Ventures celebrates its SIXTH Birthday! Since statistics show that over half of all startups fail within the first five years, we're thankful to be able to say that we're still alive and kicking.

I could bore you with statistics about how much we've purchased from artisans or how many events we've done. We could talk about publicity or our Fair Trade Federation membership. But heck, let's PARTY!

We recognize that it's because of YOU, our customers, that we have made it this far. So it's only right to include you in our celebration!

To celebrate, we're offering free domestic shipping on orders of $20 or more. This is ONLY for those of you who read our newsletter and you'll need to use the coupon code: HAPPYBDAY

Together, we DO make a difference!

FreedomMarch 13 is Freedom Sunday

Freedom Sunday

27,000,000

That is the number of people held in slavery worldwide. Sounds horrific, doesn't it? But each of us can take at least a small step to declare that it is time to end slavery once and for all time.

On March 13, 2011 churches around the world (more than 2,100 at last count) will be joining together to proclaim freedom to the captives held in modern slavery. Encourage YOUR church to join in! (Or for our Jewish friends, celebrate Freedom Shabat on March 12th!) Click the logo for more details! Get informed and stand up for freedom!

Q&ASo...........

What IS a Social Entrepreneur?

Last month we introduced the term "social entrepreneur", so it seems appropriate that we should elaborate a bit on what that term means - AND what it means to US.

Let's look first at an "entrepreneur". The term originated as being someone who "undertakes an enterprise", but it's come to mean much more than that. There are a myriad of definitions available, but I'm going to synthesize them into one of our own and say that an entrepreneur is someone who effects a fundamental change in the way things are done. A great example is Ray Kroc. Ray didn't invent the hamburger or the fast food restaurant. He didn't even create the system of making hamburgers quickly and consistently. Ray developed a system that made it possible to replicate the McDonald's "experience" anywhere from Boise to Beijing. Ray fundamentally changed the face of "fast food" world-wide. THAT is what makes him an entrepreneur.

So what is that "secret ingredient" that makes someone a SOCIAL entrepreneur? It lies in that world "social". A SOCIAL entrepreneur is someone who sees a seemingly unsolvable problem in society and sets out to implement an innovative way to solve it. One of the best examples of this has to do with micro-finance. Starting in the 1970s a number of individuals and organizations began to demonstrate that the cycle of poverty in the Third World could be broken by the use of "micro-loans" that people would use to start businesses that could provide income to their families. This was a radically different approach to attacking poverty than large "development" or "charity" projects because it was locally directed by people who understood their culture and their community needs. This is attacking a SOCIAL problem (poverty) with an ENTREPRENEURIAL (fundamentally different) approach.
