A New Year!
There's something about the first page on a brand new calendar! It's a new year! A time to set new goals and make some resolutions regarding life. A new year is a time for optimism and fresh hope.
Last year the focus in our newsletters we took opportunity to bring some understanding of Fair Trade by sharing in depth on each of the 10 principles. If you're new to our newletter or you simply need a "refresher", visit our Newsletter Archive and re-read our newsletters from last year.
In 2011 we're going to be addressing the issue of Human Trafficking, starting in this issue with some background about what it IS as well as what it is NOT. We realize this isn't a very "pleasant" topic, but our hope is that as you become informed, you'll join with us and many others world-wide to say "No More!"

National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month - January 2011
On December 22, 2010, President Obama issued a presidential proclamation regarding national Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The proclamation in part calls "upon the people of the United States to recognize the vital role we can play in ending modern slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities."

Global
Human Trafficking Awareness Day
01.11.11
January 11th marks National Global Human Trafficking Awareness Day (NGHTAD). On June 22, 2007, the US Senate passed a resolution that has forever marked January 11th as a day of awareness and vigilance for the countless victims of human trafficking across the globe.
Some statistics from Cassandra Clifford of Bridge to Freedom Foundation:
- There are some 27 million people held in slavery today across the globe.
- According to the 2009 State Department "Trafficking in Persons Report" over 80% of those trafficked trans-nationally are women and children.
- The US State Department estimates that some 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year and about 80% of them are femail and at least 50% are children.
- In 1850 a slave in the Southern United States cost the equivalent of $40,000 today. According to Free the Slaves, a slave today cost an average of $90.
Join with us at Kingdom Ventures in choosing to take action this day, be it via the internet or in your own city/town/village to remember all those around the globe who have been victimized by modern slavery and who are not free to make the day-to-day choices you and I all take for granted. |

Supplier Update
You may have noticed that "Laos" has disappeared from the sidebar. That's not because Laos has disappeared, nor that we've had any sort of falling out with our supplier.
Over the Holidays we sold the last of the excellent silk scarves that we had purchased from Savanh Mai Lao. While we've been tremendously impressed with the quality of the scarves, it has been a significant challenge to find markets for them. We had brought the scarves in on a trial in late 2009 with no promise for ongoing business, so for the moment we've decided to place Laos "on hold" while we look to see if there are other products that might be a better "fit".
