The (ad)Venture December 2010
|
Greetings!
T | | Rebecca & Glenn Fadner |
Our Heartfelt Thanks!
We find December to be a month of thanksgiving and reflection. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the faithful support and ongoing encouragement we (and in turn our suppliers too!) have accrued throughout 2010. It has been particularly evident as we have interfaced with so many folks at KVI's International Marketplace during the month of November.
We can all acknowledge that the year 2010 has had numerous "economic challenges" which we all have experienced in various ways. No doubt you are mindful that our suppliers, those people in marginalized people groups, have felt the impact even more keenly, simply due to the "trickle down" effect. However, although their "survival skills" may be more honed than most of ours, our suppliers are less likely to successfully weather these economic storms. They simply do not have the resources needed to execute a "Plan B."
As we approach the end of 2010, please accept our sincere gratitude for your faithfulness to both encourage us as well as to make your gift purchases with a desire to "make a difference". We truly value your participation with us in our business.
We pray that you and your family experience a marvelous holiday season!
From our hearts to yours,

Quote of the month
"Trade should promote fair compensation, safe and healthy conditions, long-term relationships, transparent business practices, and workplaces free from discrimination and forced child labour. When trade encompasses these elements, the lives of people and their communities improve."
Carmen K. Iezzi, Fair Trade Federation executive director.

Breaking News! KVI is now an FTF member!!

We JUST received notification that Kingdom Ventures has been accepted as a member of the Fair Trade Federation!
We have been working for several months on the application which required answering an extensive set of questions about our suppliers as well as both our and THEIR business practices. We believe this is a key next step toward greater business within the Fair Trade community.
Look for the FTF logo to start appearing in all of our materials. |

KVI's International Marketplace
~ What a smashing success!!!
The International Marketplace was certainly "The Happening Place" during the month of November!!! Utilizing three days, we transformed a 46' deep x 14' wide empty storefront into a marvelous world of products created by our artisans!!! We were graced with significant publicity each week, keeping our marketplace "front and center" in the minds of those in the Greater Rochester area! Lisa Tiffin of Southwest Connection in the Democrat & Chronicle announced our presence with a wonderful article about us and our business. The following week the public was treated to a spectacular article with photos and product listing by Jessica Spies of the Gates-Chili Post. Imagine our surprise when Wendy Mills of YNN News phoned to do a live interview with us at the shop the next week! The D&C sent Shawn Dowd to photograph us with customers in our shop ~ an array that ran twice in the papers! The finale was presented with Kingdom Ventures being featured in D&C's Our Town front page article by Driadonna Roland, complete with color photos! If your interest is piqued, you can read these documents on the "News" section of our website. (click this link) It has been an amazing journey! We have met oodles of new people and reconnected with others along the way. We have had opportunity to share the stories of our artisans and how purchases of their products make a significant impact in providing economic empowerment and sustainability for them, their families and, in turn, for their small communities. We have welcomed the conversations that have caused people to grow in their understanding regarding the connections between poverty and human trafficking as well as WHY doing Fair Trade business is so important. The response from the Greater Rochester community has been terrific!!! We trust that we will be able to once again provide this unique Fair Trade shopping opportunity to all in the 2011 holiday season!

Fair Trade Course 101 Review Class 10
What IS Fair Trade and What is MY role?
Fair Trade is a system of exchange that seeks to create greater equity and partnership in international trading system by:
- Creating opportunities for economically and socially marginalized producers
- Developing transparent and accountable relationships
- Building capacity
- Promoting Fair Trade
- Paying promptly and fairly
- Supporting safe and empowering working conditions
- Ensuring the rights of children
- Cultivating environmental stewardship
- Respecting cultural identity
Fair Trade seeks to create tremendous, positive, and long-term impact for artisans and farmers while delivering great products to the public. Such an impact is possible because Fair Trade approaches development as a holistic process. Through development as a whole process (rather than just a fair price), Far Trade organizations cultivate partnerships with their suppliers and contribute to the development of communities. Fair Trade is not about charity; it uses a fairer system of exchange to empower producers and to create sustainable, positive change.
In these communities where Fair Trade products are created, one can note both tangible and intangible results: schools are built, wells are constructed, children attend school, and other signs clearly indicate that the income generated by Fair Trade sales positively resonate within a community. In intangible ways, the impact of Fair Trade is expressed when cultural techniques are revived, women become valued members of their societies, alternative production methods preserve biodiversity, and small & medium-sized enterprises in the developing world increase their capacity. Through this and other evidence we recognize that lives have been positively changed ~ because of Fair Trade.
What can individuals do to support Fair Trade?
Individuals can support Fair Trade by educating their communities about the Fair Trade options available, by purchasing and introducing fairly-traded items into their home, office, faith community, school, or other group, by requesting products from Fair Trade organizations be placed in their local stores, by working and volunteering with Fair Trade groups, to mention but a few.
