The (ad)Venture September 2010
|
Greetings!
Rebecca & Glenn Fadner |
Ushering in the month of September with a scorcher!
You may recall in the month of August we crossed the country twice to exhibit our STOPstart, Alisim Glass Studio, and Fuente de Pino lines at trade shows on the West Coast. In between we did manage to squeeze in a few days visiting our daughter and her family in Nevada. (Without prompting, we have taken the liberty to attach a photo of us in our active roles as Grandmommy and Bapa!)
Now that we have returned home to Rochester, we turn our sights to the next business season ~ Autumn and pre-holiday months ~ which is difficult to imagine in the 90 degree heat!
From a wholesaling point of view, it truly IS the "stocking for the holiday season" time of year ~ a very critical time for us and for our suppliers. Orders placed through the shows and through our reps have our suppliers busy! Simon and his team are focused on producing their recycled glass jewelry from Kenya to fulfill our order to them. The women of El Sauce', Nicaragua are quite busy with creating their lovely pine needle baskets to meet our demand. Expecting a brand new shipment of STOPstart products within a few days, we are eager to fulfill ALL of the orders from across the US!
From a retailing point of view, we are prepping for our final run of outdoor shows at Dansville, Palmyra and at Roberts Wesleyan's homecoming. October will find us "under the covers" with shipping final wholesale orders and much preparation for our KVI International Marketplace event being held throughout the month of November (further details below!)
Thank you for making it a priority to "shop Fair Trade" and for choosing to "Make a Difference" in the lives of those who create products for you! We are grateful to have you as a member of the KVI team!

STOPstart a year later
You may recall in September 2009, we shared that our main supplier, Hagar Design of Cambodia, was becoming STOPstart. Hagar International had made a significant decision to "spin off" Hagar On-Time! (HO-T!), their textile business that manufactures all of our Hagar Design products. (Those details for review: click this link) However, the condensed version is that in order to conserve finances for their social programs, Hagar International sold HO-T! to a group of like-minded Australians who operate it under the name STOPStart. Therefore the products we subsequently receive come equipped with the above STOPstart hangtag.
Since a year has passed, we thought we'd report in with the progress of this significant decision. For us, the transition has been virtually seamless. Our largest challenge comes from STOPstart's direction of moving more and more of the management responsibility to Cambodians -- particularly women who have "come up through the ranks". As their English isn't QUITE as good as the folks from Australia and New Zealand, we DO occasionally have some communication "challenges". We are thrilled to have a great working relationship with STOPstart which includes a multi-national collaborative effort to develop new products.
But KVI's connection with Hagar and its social mission is not simply a "business relationship."As social entrepreneurs, we are as interested and invested in the people behind the products as much as in providing them with economic empowerment and sustainability.
Since our launch in 2005, we at KVI have been closely affiliated with Hagar International and its mission to bring restoration and rehabilitation to Cambodian women and their children who have been rescued from sexual slavery and extreme domestic violence. We invite you to explore Hagar International, who they are, their social mission, and the lives they touch. A short Intro to Hagar video will introduce you to its founder and the mission through the eyes of the restored women. Please consider exploring their website and discover the work of Hagar which is now also in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Finally Hagar USA's quarterly newsletter is available for a quick but valuable read.
We invite you to become informed about the "story behind the products." Come along with us on this journey in making a difference in the lives of others through economic empowerment and sustainability! Let us remember: it is all about The People! |
KVI's International Marketplace
As the holiday season draws nigh, we had been wrestling with HOW could we deliver unique, international products to YOU to meet your holiday gift-giving needs and desires AND, at the same time, bring economic sustainability to our suppliers?
As you may recall from last month's newsletter, we hinted a bit about our KVI plans for the holiday season. We mentioned that we had secured some retail space on the west side of Rochester for the month of November. Now for some further details ~ The Location!
Well, a few of you may have already identified the location from the photo. If not, during the month of November plan to find our holiday shop and our "Make a Difference" products in the small storefront sandwiched between Starbucks (of course!) and Hairzoo in the Westgate Plaza east of the corner of Chili Ave and Howard Road. For those of you who are visual, click here. (Our shop will be located in the small strip mall between Applebees and Rite Aid in the Gates Walmart Supercenter plaza.)
Remember KVI is not "downsizing" but "supersizing"! Therefore this KVI holiday season event requires a new and appropriate name: "KVI's International Marketplace." Our suppliers are busy even now preparing THEIR creations for exhibition and purchase!
Next month we will announce our shop hours and further details! Plan to visit with us @ KVI's International Marketplace in November! |

Fair Trade 101 Class 8
Organizations which produce Fair Trade products maximize the use of raw materials from sustainably managed sources in their ranges, buying locally when possible. They use production technologies that seek to reduce energy consumption and where possible use renewable energy technologies that minimize greenhouse gas emissions. They seek to minimize the impact of their waste stream on the environment. Fair Trade agricultural commodity producers minimize their environmental impacts, by using organic or low pesticide use production methods wherever possible.
Buyers and importers of Fair Trade products give priority to buying products made from raw materials that originate from sustainably managed sources, and have the least overall impact on the environment.
All organizations use recycled or easily biodegradable materials for packing to the extent possible, and goods are dispatched by sea wherever possible.
