Introducing the Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education

With the departure this summer of Dr. Theresa Piatek, Director of Educational Operations, the District has decided to divide the educational and curriculum side of operations, which covered K-12, into elementary and secondary levels.  This change allows for a more focused approach to the unique challenges of each grade grouping.  Renel Williams moves into the position of Director of Elementary Education (Pre-K through 6) and the District welcomes William McClarnon as the Directory of Secondary Education (7 through 12).

Renel WilliamsMrs. Williams began her career with the District in 2005 as the Assessment Coordinator.  She then moved into the position of Coordinator for Curriculum and Assessment before becoming the Director of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment.  Her professional career began in the elementary classroom as a Special Education teacher, teaching in three different states, and then transitioned into administration with her arrival at Penn Hills.  She completed her Master's in School Administration at Duquesne University and has certifications in Special Education Supervision, Curriculum and Instruction, and K-12 Principal Certification.

Mrs. Williams' role is to assist all administrators in building them as instructional leaders and administering their buildings properly, supporting the building administrators, and addressing curriculum (ensuring that what is written is being implemented and writing new curriculum).  Her role encompasses all aspects of the elementary level.

"My goal is to continue to build the school district in a positive way and make sure we are making decisions for all children," Mrs. Williams explained.  It is all about what is right for the kids, she added, and their education.  She said the District also wants to make sure we are working with the community, cultivating that relationship to the best advantage of the children.

Mr. McClarnon began his work with the District onWilliam McClarnon September 2nd.  His background includes teaching Social Studies at both the middle school and high school levels and serving as assistant high school principal, middle school principal (opening the first middle school in Deer Lakes School District), and high school principal.  He sees his movement into the administration at Penn Hills as a natural progression from his building experience.  Not only was it an opportunity for professional advancement, but it provided a chance to share his experience and skills at the secondary level.

Mr. McClarnon completed his Master's in the Administrative and Policy Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh and has his Principal's Certification (7-12) and Superintendent's Certification.  He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education.

One of the main reasons he came to Penn Hills is what he calls its "traditionally strong academic reputation."  His goal is to focus on what is already in place and advance academic programs to their fullest extent.  "All of the ingredients are here for success," he explained, adding, "it is a question of organizing and implementing them properly."

Like Mrs. Williams, Mr. McClarnon will provide support for all aspects of secondary administration, prioritizing and supporting programs that best advance building objectives.  One main focus will be the PSSA results.  "Sustained and positive movement on the PSSAs is a priority," he said, emphasizing that the District has incredible potential.

Student Summer Program
Taylor AllenLinton 8th Grader Taylor Allen successfully completed the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) this summer.  Dr. Marguerite C. Regan, Dean of Academic Affairs, called Taylor's participation "a key component in the overwhelming success of the Conference."

Over six days, Taylor explored the Washington, DC, capital region, investigating leadership throughout the nation's history, engaging in fast-paced experiential simulations, and developing her own leadership skills.  Highlights from the conference include:
  • Investigating American leadership through explorations of Washington, DC, and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
  • Exploring hands-on exhibits and up-to-the-second technology at the brand new high-tech Newseum, learning about the history of news and the role it plays in society
  • Performing hands-on exercises focusing on key leadership skills, including communication, problem solving, teamwork, and goal setting
  • Participating in the "Voices of Change" simulation, which tasked Taylor with developing a project to solve an ongoing problem in her community or school.

The JrNYLC helps scholars develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past and empowering them to make a positive social impact in their community and the world.

Geared toward looking at leadership through a practical, everyday lens, JrNYLC incorporates a detailed examination of eight leadership traits and focuses on leaders in American history and social advocacy. Distinctive site experiences, hands-on exercises, and workshops bring these concepts to life, while students work together to develop action plans that affect change within their homes and communities.

Two Students Take on Board Duties
The Penn Hills School Board recently swore in two new student representatives to serve for the 2009-2010 school year.  Seniors Mike Ferraco and Jenna Plummer will attend the regular voting meetings to observe the process and provide reports to update the Board and public on student activities.

Mike FerracoMike is Senior Class President, Team Captain for Varsity Soccer, and kicker on the Varsity Football Team.  He is also a member of the National Honor Society, German Club, and Teen Leadership Council.  Out-of-school activities focus on soccer, with Mike serving as Team Captain of the FC Pittsburgh Soccer Club and Penn Hills Phantoms Travel Soccer Team, Youth Soccer Camp Director, and Grade 8 Recreational Soccer Referee.  He is on the High Honor Roll, with a GPA of 4.06 and Class Rank No. 1.  His favorite class is computer programming.

Mike's main goal is to be able to represent Penn Hills High School, especially the senior class of 2010, in front of the School Board.  He would like to be able to present issues to them that he thinks need to be brought to their attention and keep them up to date on the activities and accomplishments of the senior class.

From his experience on the School Board, he said he hopes to learn about the Board members and the way they view their issues.  "It is great to be involved with this group of people because they make the decisions for the entire school district of Penn Hills," he explained.  He also said he hopes to gain a good reputation for the senior class of 2010 and hopefully make it one that they will remember years from now.

"It is a great experience for me," Mike said, adding, "I am excited to be a part of it."  Each meeting, he explained, he has the opportunity to speak about the issues and events taking place at the high school.  This gives the School Board the opinion of a student who is actually walking the halls and involved in everyday school life.  "I think this opinion is important when the Board is making their decisions, and I am honored to represent the school," he stated.

Mike plans on attending college and majoring in computer science, as well as continuing his soccer career.  He has not yet decided where he will attend college.

Jenna is Student Council President and Homeroom Representative and is one of the leaders of the Teen Leadership Council.  She is also a Varsity Soccer Team Captain and plays fastJenna Plummer pitch softball for the High School Varsity Team.  She has earned a varsity letter since 9th grade in each sport.  Her activities have also included serving as one of the student ambassadors this year for refugees from Iraq.  Her favorite classes include Forensics 2, Spanish, and AP English.

"My role as a School Board representative means the world to me," she said, adding, "knowing that I have to be our voice of the student body is a strong task that I am willing to take on."  She expects to be a good leader and make some changes, eventually leaving her mark as a positive leader and student at Penn Hills.

During her time on the Board, she expects to learn more about Penn Hills and how the School District works, as well as what goes on outside of the high school hall ways.  "I would like to gain from this experience by becoming a more mature person," she explained, "becoming more aware of situations and issues that go on around me."  Feeling very honored to have such a great opportunity, Jenna said she hopes she can serve the position well.

Although her future plans are undecided at the moment, she does plan on studying sports management/business administration and playing college soccer.  Some colleges she has been looking at are West Virginia, Wesleyan College, and Slippery Rock University.
Veggie and Fruit Program a Success
2009 PTA Volleyball WinnersThe District has received two national grants from the state for this school year totaling more than $69,000 to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for students at Dible and Washington Elementary Schools.  These buildings were chosen based on the number of students eligible for free and reduced lunches.  The purpose of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP) is to provide all children in a participating school with a variety of free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks throughout the school day as a supplement to (and not part of) the school breakfast and school lunch programs and to teach students about good nutrition. The FFVP also encourages schools to partner with other entities in the community to support their FFVP efforts.

"We believe the FFVP grant will benefit both students and parents by increasing the children's willingness to try new foods and to learn to snack on fruits and vegetables instead of high-calorie food items," said Stefanie Raspotnik, Professional Development and Funding Coordinator and Lisa DalleTezze, Food Service Director.  "The staff at both schools will devote time each week to emphasize the importance of healthy eating habits. Students have responded favorably to the program and have shown an increased interest in eating healthy!"
Web Site Recognized at State Level
The District has received an Award of Excellence in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association 2009 Educational Publications Contest.

The District's web site earned the Award of Excellence, the highest honor possible, in the Internet/Intranet Web Site category.  It was cited for excellent graphics and "wonderful use of site to delivery community news."  The site received perfect scores from both judges in all categories (general appearance, design; content; navigation; usability; and message makes appropriate use of media).  There were a total of 210 entries, including 31 web sites, from across Pennsylvania in this year's contest.  Awards included Awards of Excellence and Honorable Mention.

The Award of Excellence entries will be displayed at the 2009 PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference in Hershey October 13-16, 2009.
Bond Issue Approved; Building Plan Moves Forward
The District is moving ahead with plans for a new senior high school and consolidated elementary center after a $130 million bond issue was approved at the September Board meeting.  Although the bond issue passed unanimously, three members were opposed to a plan to consolidate the District's four elementary schools into one elementary center.  Those voting against sending the plan to the state were Carolyn Faggioli, Catherine Mowry, and Erin Vecchio.  Member Don Kuhn abstained.

The new senior high school will be built on the site of the current Roberts Administration Building.  Plans call for moving the administration into Linton and creating an elementary center on the Dible site.  Anticipated completion for both construction projects is 2012.  The administration is expected to be moved after the Christmas break.

Director of Business Affairs Richard Liberto said the consolidation is essential for the District to be able to move ahead with construction of the new senior high school with no cost to tax payers.  Money to repay the 30-year bond is expected to come through savings realized from the elementary consolidation and elimination of the aging high school building.
District Receives Wendy's Spirit Award
Spirit Award
Thanks to all who voted for Penn Hills on the WPXI.com website, the District received the Wendy's Spirit Award during Week 2 of the season.  The award was presented by John Fedko and Wendy's Mr. Frosty to cheerleaders, band members, and football players at a special assembly on September 17th.  Along with the award, the District was presented with a check in the amount of $256.  For video of the event, click on the photo.
PSSA Results
The Penn Hills School District recently received the final results of the 2008-09 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) exams, indicating that the District has once again achieved AYP status.  Preliminary results indicate that two of the District's six schools have achieved AYP status in both reading and mathematics.

Overall, students in Grades 3-5 exceeded the math proficiency threshold of 56% by a score of 66%.  In reading, students in Grades 3-5 met the reading proficiency threshold of 63% by a score of 61.9% (met through 2 years of data and Confidence Interval).  Students in Grades 6-8 met the math proficiency threshold by a score of 56.3%.  In reading, these students met the reading threshold with a score of 60.5% (met through Safe Harbor).  Three out of the four schools that did not make AYP only missed that status by one target.

The District also met or exceeded AYP rates for attendance, graduation, and participation.  Details were provided in a presentation at the September 14th Public School Board meeting regarding performance by grade level and building within the District, as well as the overall District results.  To view a pdf of that presentation, click here.

The PSSA, a standards-based assessment, measures individual student growth and determines the degree to which school programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards.  Student results are reported as either advanced, proficient, basic, or below basic levels of performance.  According to No Child Left Behind legislation, student attendance must exceed 90 percent, the graduation rate must exceed 80 percent, math performance must exceed 56 percent, and reading performance must exceed 63 percent to qualify for AYP status.  For an individual school to make AYP, proficiency must be achieved for all subgroups.
NJROTC Cadets Help Out at Penn Hebron
NJROTC Penn Hebron
The Penn Hills NJROTC cadets proved to be a big success at the Penn Hebron welcome back picnic on September 17th.  According to Penn Hebron PTA President Christine Polaski, they arrived early to set up and were willing to do anything and everything asked of them. "They were courteous and motivated at all times," she said, adding that she has had great experiences with the students in the past but  that night was just incredible.

She attributed the success of the evening to the involvement of the cadets.  "Although I did the planning in general for the picnic and many PTA volunteers worked hard today and before the picnic," she explained to the cadets' commander, "your kids did all the back breaking and tiresome labor!"  This included everything from moving tables to setting up and lighting the grill to cooking and putting tattoos on kids.

Over 20 NJROTC students participated in the event.  Additional photos are available in the Penn Hebron photo gallery.
