Superintendent's Welcome - Dr. Joseph Carroll
Dr. CarrollI would like to welcome back all of our students and staff to the Penn Hills School District for the 2009-10 school year.  In an effort to provide all students in our District with the most advantageous educational atmosphere, we are concentrating on curriculum and conduct this year.  We have high expectations for our highly qualified teaching staff and administrators.  At the same time, we are expecting strong academic performance and handbook compliance from all students.

Continuing the curriculum development processes that we implemented during the past year, we will maintain and build upon our working relationship with the entire Penn Hills community (parents, guardians, teachers, aides, administrators, security, police, and the public) as well as the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office in a combined effort to produce student behavioral consistency.  An enhanced compact with the district attorney's office will be utilized in those rare cases of extremely aggressive behavior.  Examples would be a violation of Act 26 (Weapons Policy) and/or Statute 18 PA.C.S.A. § 2702 (physical attack against staff identified as a second degree felony).  These will be applied in isolated and rare circumstances.  I include this to emphasize the measures the District is willing to take in order to provide quality education in a calm environment conducive for all students to learn.

We look forward to a challenging but rewarding school year as we move ahead with our reconfiguration plans, staff realignment, and curriculum implementation.
School District Receives Donation
2009 PTA Volleyball WinnersOn August 28th, the District dedicated the newly renovated weight room in the Fralic Athletic Center.

This project was made possible thanks to a $55,000 donation from Penn Hills High School Class of 1982 Alum Chuck Sanders.  Upon graduation, Sanders played football at Slippery Rock University.  A two-time football ALL-AMERICAN and the 1984 NCAA Division II leading rusher, he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers. Sanders is the only Slippery Rock player to compete in the East-West Shrine ALL-STAR game following his collegiate career and was a Heisman trophy candidate prior to his senior year.  He played professional football with the Pittsburgh Steelers and then went on to become CEO of Urban Settlement Inc., a real estate company.

Sanders spoke at the dedication of his affection for his home District and the young men of the varsity and junior varsity football squads who stood before him as well as the value and specialness of these young athletes.  His donation was used to completely redo the weight room at the Fralic Center.  This included new flooring with the school logo, all new Hammer Strength weight training equipment, and a sports mural on one wall.

The equipment is the same as used by professional athletes.  "If the pros use it," Athletic Director John Peterman said, "It has to be good."  He expressed appreciation for the donation to the athletic center which will be of such tremendous benefit to the District's young athletes.  "We always have former Penn Hills people looking to give back to the District," he said, adding that it is one of the things that makes Penn Hills so special.
District Employee Runs for Fun
You might very well have seen Penn Hills Grad and Custodian Brian Caskey running along the streets of the community, indulging in his favorite pastime.

Brian has been a runner for more than 20 years, something he began as a student in the District.  When his older brother decided to go out for the track team, Brian followed a year later.  Ironically, he did not begin as a runner but rather as a jumper.  It was only in his second year that he decided to run and in high school that he began to enjoy it.  He ran his first marathon in Pittsburgh in 2000, coming in at 3 hours and 23 minutes.  "From that point," he explained, "I was hooked."  Other marathons followed including the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon.  He finished the Boston race in 2 hours and 57 minutes, despite a hernia requiring surgery upon his return.  He also placed 39th out of 10,400 entrants in the Pittsburgh Marathon.

Brian runs over 80 miles a week to train.  "It's something I really enjoy," he said, adding that "I hope I can do it the rest of my life."  In October, Brian will celebrate his birthday by competing in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington along with over 30,000 entrants.

Participating in 30 races and 2-3 marathons a year, he says he always runs outside, regardless of the weather.  He enjoys traveling and meeting people from all over the country, hopes to race overseas in the future, and hopes to train for the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.  This event consists of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile marathon.  Whew!
Coach Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Ron GrahamJune 13th saw the enshrinement of eight new inductees into the Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame, including one of Penn Hills' own.  The members of the 29th class were introduced at a special ceremony at the Senator John Heinz History Center and Sports Museum and included Penn Hills' Head Varsity Football Coach Ron Graham.  Coach Graham was recognized for his achievements as a linebacker at Tuskegee and member of the Pittsburgh Wolf Pak.

Coach Graham has been involved with football since his days as a linebacker and tight end at Peabody High School.  His achievements brought him a football scholarship to Tuskegee University in Alabama.  He would go on to earn degrees in education at both Carlow and Duquesne Universities.

He began his work in the Penn Hills School District over 13 years ago.  He worked with the District varsity football program, first as a volunteer and then as a full-time staff member, serving as a defensive coordinator before becoming head coach.  His local football experience also includes coaching in the Penn Hills Youth Football League and semi pro developmental leagues in the Pittsburgh area.

A long-time Penn Hills resident, Coach Graham finds a way to integrate his love of sports with a strong appreciation for the value of academics and works hard to instill this respect for education in the students with which he interacts.  (photo courtesy of Dream Photography)
