Oklahoma Title
There is still time to see the Penn Hills Senior High School presentation of "Oklahoma!"  Final performances are May 1st and 2nd at 7:30 p.m.

Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, this musical tells the romance of Curly McLain and Laurey Williams in the Oklahoma Territory, circa 1906.  It includes the drama of a spurned admirer, competition between cowboys and farmers trying to share the same land, and the sillier triangle of Ado Annie, Will Parker, and Ali Hakim.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.  There will be reserved seating for all performances.

Penn Hills is, however, a peanut-free school district.  Under no circumstances are peanut products allowed to be distributed to the classrooms for any reason (snacks, etc.).  In addition, at lunch, each cafeteria must have a "peanut-free table" for those children who are allergic to nuts.  If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please contact the food service office at 412-795-3000, ext. 182.

Preliminary 2009-10 Budget Figures Presented
On April 23rd, a preliminary budget plan was presented at a public Finance Committee Meeting.  The proposed budget, on-track to be passed at the June Public Voting Meeting, calls for taxes to remain at their current rate.  The presentation can be viewed by clicking here.
Linton Earth Day Cleanup

Linton Earth Day CleanupOn April 25th, students at Linton got together for a project to help beautify their school.  They came out on the first truly summerlike Saturday of spring to dig dirt, haul rocks, spread mulch, plant flowers, and generally clean up a side courtyard of the school.  Participation was not required but that didn't stop 117 students, staff, and parents from giving up part of their weekend to donate their time and energy for the good of the Linton community.  It was a chance to celebrate the positive side of Linton, the side which consists of so many people willing to do whatever they can to make the school a better place for the students.

In addition to the volunteers, numerous businesses donated materials and prizes for the event.  Oakmont Bakery provided a $10 gift card used as a door prize and won by 9th Grader TeQuila Cole.  Tedesco's Plants and Flowers donated flowers for the courtyard and a potted plant was used as a door prize, won by Donna Gionta.  Pasqualino's Pizza provided two pizzas and Aramark Refreshment Services provided five cases of bottled water.  Other vendors who donated items included:  Penn Hills Nursery, Lowe's and Home Depot (Monroeville), Majewski Remodeling, Verrico's Landscape Suppliers, and Ferracco's Landscape Suppliers.  Additional photos from the event can be seen here.
PTA Presents 57 Scholarships to Seniors

Scholarship Night 042809

On April 28th, the PTA presented members of the Class of 2009 with 57 scholarships in the amount of $500 each.  The evening was a time for tears and laughter as students took to the podium.  For parents, having suffered through perhaps too many years of teenage angst, it was an opportunity to hear, "thanks, Mom"; "thanks, Dad"; "you're my best friend"; "you're my hero"; "you mean everything to me."  It was a time for younger siblings to be told they weren't really an annoyance but beloved family members who would be missed when it was time to go to college.  For many teachers, they learned just how much of a positive impact they had on their intelligent, charismatic, talented, and grateful students.

Scholarship Night offers the best example of what makes the Penn Hills community special as people from all walks of life come together to give of themselves to help students they may not even know take the next step in their journey through life.  And, student after student expressed just how grateful they all were for that support and vote of confidence.  Good luck to all members of the Class of 2009!

Featured Student - Dustin Blickenderfer
2009 PTA Volleyball Winners
The District and Penn Hebron are filled with outstanding students, and one of those extraordinary young people is Dustin Blickenderfer.  This 5th grader has many unique qualities that make him a superb choice for recognition.  Dustin is a High Honor Roll student, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average for the entire school year.  He shares his excellence in the classroom and is always willing to rally round his classmates, teachers, and anyone who needs his help.  Creativeness towards learning and an enterprising attitude are how Dustin approaches all problems and situations, making him successful in handling all tasks and an inspiration in the classroom.

According to Teacher Megan Mathieu, "Dustin's ability to inspire those around him extends past the classroom.  His humor and comic relief make everyone smile around him."  In addition to his academic excellence, Dustin has honed his acting and guitar-playing skills, giving a fantastic performance in the Penn Hebron talent show as he played his guitar.  Not satisfied with that, Dustin is also a talented athlete, playing both baseball and basketball.

Dustin's abilities go beyond the classroom and reach out to many others in a motivating way.  "We are all proud of Dustin and his continued hard work," Mathieu said, adding, "Dustin is a wonderful young man, and we are all so proud of his accomplishments and his dedication to education."

Under the leadership of Cadet Yurri Lewis, a junior, the Penn Hills cadets did an outstanding job.  They took 1st Place in the Large Unit Marching Category, with Cadet Darnell Davis, also a junior, calling cadences.  They took 1st Place in the Stretcher Bearer's race, which included a general knowledge test that on which the 5 Penn Hills cadets got a perfect score, and they also did very well in the Color Guard and Chemical Defense Suit Donning competitions.  In the final event of the day, Cadet Stephen Sloane, a junior, was third in the individual push-up competition.  The school's aggregate score gave Penn Hills the overall 1st Place Unit Trophy.

Volleyball Team No. 1 in State
With two games left, the boys' volleyball team remains unbeaten in regular season play and has clinched, at a minimum, a tie for the section crown.

The team is currently 10 and 0 in Section 3 of AAA.  A win on April 30th against Gateway can wrap up the title outright.  Senior night will offer a very big contest against 2nd place Latrobe on May 5th.  Fans should plan on coming early as a big crowd is expected for this matchup.

The team continued its domination at invitationals over the past 2 weeks. On April 18th, Penn Hills defeated the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the state at the Koller Classic in York, Pennsylvania.  Although the team was upset in the finals, it remained a very successful tournament. This past Saturday, April 25th, the Indians won 11 straight games to capture the Plum Volleyball Invitational as the team once again defeated North Allegheny in the finals. With this win, the 2009 Penn Hills Boys' Volleyball Team became the first team in over 30 years to capture 3 out of 4 major invitational championships.
Teacher Accepted as Summer University Fellow
Senior High Teacher Carmen Livingston has been accepted as a 2009 American Society of News Editors Reynolds Institute Fellow at the University of Missouri this summer.  She will be attending a seminar from July 12-24 on the core values of journalism and tools needed to produce a quality scholastic newspaper, both online and in print.  Only 35 teachers were accepted out of a pool of 541 applicants.

The acceptance process included filling out a brief application, submitting an essay on why she wanted this opportunity, and sending in a recent copy of Penn Points, as well as a resume.  Ms. Livingston has taught English for ten years, five of those at Penn Hills, where she teaches 12th grade college prep and accelerated English; Journalism I, II, and III; and speech.  She has also served as the adviser to the school's literary magazine for the last 3 years.  Before teaching, she worked as a newspaper reporter for The Syracuse Newspapers and was an associate producer for the Corporation for Educational Radio and Television based in New York City.

Ms. Livingston saw the seminar as an opportunity to help rejuvenate the school newspaper program, which she has been managing for one year. "My intentions are to seize the best ideas out there for today's diverse high school population and bring them home to Penn Hills," she explained. "I consider it an honor to be one of the few teachers chosen and will certainly enjoy being invested again in some of the core principles and practices of my first profession," she added.
Coming in May, Linton Battle of the Classes, End-of-the-Year Celebrations, and a farewell to the Class of 2009.  All this and more in the next edition of Penn Hills Pride.
