Message from the President

Dr. Higdon

With spring classes beginning this week, enrollment at Ozarks Technical Community College has increased once again.  A total of 13,220 students are enrolled this semester, 16.1 percent more than the spring of 2010.

An ever-increasing number of southwest Missouri residents are pursuing the training opportunities at OTC as they work to enhance their careers and their lives.  With this year's planned expansions for our Springfield and Waynesville locations, as well as the move to our new facility in Lebanon, we are working hard to provide the space and resources that our growing student population demands.  The breakout of enrollment among OTC's six locations is as follows:

Campus/Education CenterStudentsPercent Growth
Springfield Campus8,98610.8 percent
Richwood Valley Campus1,09620.6 percent

However, a total of 4,571 students are taking at least one online class.  The College has offered online classes for several years, but demand has increased exponentially since OTC made it possible for students to earn a complete Associates degree online.

This is an exciting time for both students and employees at OTC.  The OTC Foundation has been busy raising awareness about the many needs on our campus.  See the graph below to view the continued progress of our Major Gifts Capital Campaign.

$100,000 grant from The Sunderland Foundation takes
OTC Capital Campaign over $10 million

Ten
Imagine. Invest. Inspire. Capital Campaign
reaches $10 million.

The Sunderland Foundation presented the OTC Foundation with a grant of $100,000 on December 1,  to help with the construction costs for new classrooms at the College's Springfield campus.  This grant brought the total amount raised for the OTC Foundation's first-ever Major Gifts Capital Campaign to $10,091,110.

"This grant from The Sunderland Foundation is significant to the College for many reasons, not the least of which is the milestone it brings to our Capital Campaign and to the fundraising history of OTC," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of Ozarks Technical Community College.  "It also demonstrates that organizations and people outside of our direct service areas recognize the value of the education and training we provide."

Based in Kansas City, The Sunderland Foundation has spent more than 60 years investing primarily in the brick-and-mortar efforts of nonprofit organizations, including building construction, renovation, repairs and restoration.  The Sunderland Foundation strives to support communities, families, and youth through capital and special projects that allow nonprofits to fulfill their missions.

"While we initially thought that this would be a $10 million campaign, given the new capital improvement projects recently approved by our Board of Trustees, we intend to continue our fundraising efforts," explained Cliff Davis, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the OTC Foundation.  "We expect the campaign to run at least through the summer of 2011."

The OTC Foundation, now in its 13th year of operation, works to meet the ever-increasing needs of Ozarks Technical Community College through the funding of scholarships, new programs, and capital improvement projects.  The current Major Gifts Capital Campaign includes efforts to raise money for scholarships, as well as for a Center for Health Education, Student Support programs, and Workforce Development.

Davis added, "Operating a growing institution like OTC requires continual fundraising.  While we will eventually end this campaign, the process of seeking the support of businesses and citizens in our community never really 'ends.'"

Hamilton Medical, Inc. donates G5 Ventilator to benefit

The OTC Foundation has received a gift of a Hamilton G5 Ventilator, valued at a list price of $55,320, from Hamilton Medical, Inc.  The ventilator, which is the same equipment now in use at St. John's Hospital, will be used to train students in the College's Respiratory Therapy program.

The donation of this equipment came out of the existing relationship between St. John's Hospital, Hamilton Medical, and Ozarks Technical Community College.  St. John's recently purchased 22 of the ventilator systems, and the gift to the College was arranged as part of the transaction.

"The ability to train our students on the same equipment currently in use in area hospitals will provide an advantage to our graduates, as they prepare for clinical experience and for their careers," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of the College.  "This is another great example of how the relationships between community colleges and area industry leaders can be mutually beneficial, and can lead to advancements for the community as a whole."

In 2009, Ozarks Technical Community College's Respiratory Therapy program was named one of the top ten programs in the nation by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).  The program prepares its graduates for careers as Registered Respiratory Therapists, working primarily in hospitals, private clinics or home care.  A career in respiratory therapy offers unique challenges in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with lung problems.

Bill & Ann Turner and
The Turner Family Foundation
donate gift for ICW Expansion

The OTC Foundation has received a gift of $30,000 from Bill and Ann Turner and the Turner Family Foundation.  The funds will be used for the expansion of the Information Commons West on the College's Springfield campus, and the new Turner Family Student Lounge will be named in the family's honor.

"The Turners and the Turner Family Foundation have been supporters of OTC for many years, and we are honored that they have chosen to be involved with our Springfield campus expansion," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of Ozarks Technical Community College.  "Their generosity and dedication to higher education is appreciated, and we are pleased to have an opportunity to recognize them for it."

Bill Turner, President of Great Southern Bank, and his wife, Ann, have been closely involved with the College and the OTC Foundation for many years.  Mrs. Turner served as a founding member of the OTC Foundation Board of Directors from 1996-2006, including one term as president. Additionally, daughter Julie Turner Brown has held a position on the Board since 2006.

"The OTC Foundation, and the College as a whole, have benefitted greatly from the involvement of the Turner family," added Cliff Davis, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the OTC Foundation.  "Their gifts of time, energy and funding have all demonstrated their support of our students, our faculty and staff, and our mission."

Since 1999, The Turner Family Foundation and the Turner family have made 27 gifts to the College, with this most recent gift bringing the total to more than $165,000 in support of student scholarships and of outstanding faculty and staff through the annual Excellence in Education Awards.  Additionally, in 2008, OTC honored Bill Turner with the OTC Excellence In Business Award for his distinguished service on behalf of the College and to our greater community.

OTC Expansion offers naming opportunities

Ozarks Technical Community College is growing like never before.  With the donation of the buildings in Lebanon, purchase of land in Hollister, and the expansion of Information Commons West in Springfield, there are many opportunities for the community to get involved.

So far, we have a few donors supporting the Lebanon center and the Springfield ICW Expansion by naming a classroom and/or conference room.

Thank you to the generosity of these families for their continued support of OTC.
