November 2010

Message from the President

Casey Lebanon

The College held an Open House at its new Lebanon Education Center on October 1.  The event began with recognition of guests of honor Reuben and Mary Lou Casey, the San Clemente, Calif., couple who donated the new facilities to the College.

The gift from the Caseys, presented to OTC in December of 2009, was composed of two buildings and more than 13 acres of land. The total property was valued at approximately $2.6 million, and is the largest gift the College has ever received.  The facilities, located off of Interstate 44 on Highway MM, will be divided into rooms that will eventually become classrooms, offices, computer labs, student spaces and more; classes will be held at the new Lebanon Education Center beginning in the fall of 2011.

Our major gifts capital campaign continues to be a priority to raise money to support our four initiatives and our growing needs.  We have raised over $9.5 million so far and continue to work to improve students opportunities in our community.

Thank you for your continued support.

As always, please feel free to call, email, write or come by when you have a chance.

Springfield business icon Carol Jones has presented Ozarks Technical Community College with two gifts totaling $500,000.  The first $250,000 of the donation will fund scholarships for disadvantaged women, and the second $250,000 will be used to support the newly named Carol Jones Writing Center.  The writing center is a valuable resource for students who need extra help with any part of the writing process.

"Ms. Jones has focused her gifts in areas that will most directly benefit the students, and we are pleased to express our thanks through the dedication of the Carol Jones Writing Center," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of the College.  "We are grateful for all of the support that Ms. Jones has given to OTC over the years."

Jones visited the Springfield campus of Ozarks Technical Community College earlier this week for the official placement of a plaque in her honor in the Carol Jones Writing Center.  While there, Jones had an opportunity to talk with several of the students who have been helped in their pursuits at the College by the tutors and resources in the writing center.

OTC Foundation holds
Leadership Reception for
financial & estate planners

Greg DeLong, OTC Foundation Board MemberGreg DeLong and the OTC Foundation hosted a Leadership Reception on Friday, October 29 to educate professionals in the estate and financial planning arena to learn about the College.

In addition to current information about OTC, information was provided on various investment opportunities including planned giving, naming opportunities and Middle College Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) tax credits.

Missouri YOP Tax Credits are available for donations directed to the Middle College, a program designed for bright, talented students that are underperforming in the traditional high school setting.  Middle College offers students an opportunity to realize their potential within a contemporary college environment.  This program is in its third year and allows students to achieve their high school diploma, learn career and technical skills, earn college credit, participate in internships, and develop leadership skills.  If you would like to learn more about the Middle College and YOP tax credits, please contact Dr. LaRaine Bauer, Middle College Coordinator.

Thank you for those of you that attended and please contact the OTC Foundation if we can assist you further.

2010 Golf Tournament

A beautiful day welcomed dozens of teams to the course for the OTC Foundation's 4th annual golf tournament, held on September 27th at Hickory Hills Golf and Country Club. The fairways and greens were filled with area business and community leaders, as well as OTC employees, who had come out to support the College and its students through the OTC Foundation's largest annual fundraising event.

This year's tournament raised nearly $23,000 dollars. Thank you to all participants and sponsors for supporting our event this year.  The money raised will change the lives of hundreds of OTC students by helping to fund student scholarships.

Hollister property purchased,
donation of land received from the
city of Hollister

The Board of Trustees of Ozarks Technical Community College has approved the purchase of two properties for a future campus in Hollister.  The properties are located on Highway 165, which includes the former Crockey's restaurant and an adjacent parcel of land, both of which face Highway 65.

"We value the support and interest of all of the area property owners who have been a part of this process as we have weighed all the options.  We believe we have selected the best location possible for this project," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of Ozarks Technical Community College.

The city of Hollister has agreed to donate another .83 acre of land adjacent to the two purchased properties, providing the College a total of 9.08 acres for the project.

Citizens in the Hollister School District voted in April 2010 to join the Ozarks Technical Community College taxing district.  Joining the OTC district allows Hollister residents to pay the in-district tuition to attend the College, which is significantly lower than the cost for students living outside of the district.

"OTC appreciates the confidence of the voters in the Hollister school district, the Hollister school district and its Board of Education, the City of Hollister and its leadership, and the Hollister Chamber of Commerce," Dr. Higdon said.  "We look forward to enhancing the economic and workforce development in Hollister and the Table Rock Lake area."

Lebanon, Hollister and
Springfield ICW Expansion offers
naming opportunities

Ozarks Technical Community College is growing like never before.  With the donation of the buildings in Lebanon, purchase of land in Hollister, and the expansion of Information Commons West in Springfield, there are many opportunities for the community to get involved.

So far, we have a few donors supporting the Lebanon center and the Springfield ICW Expansion by naming a classroom and/or conference room.

Thank you to the generosity of these families for their continued support of OTC.
