December 2009

Message from the President

Dr. HigdonThere is no question that 2009 was a tough year for many of us. The downturn in the economy left many people without jobs and others underemployed.  We saw the effects of the recession first hand at OTC. Many students returned to OTC to obtain their GED, to learn a skilled-trade or to further their education. This resulted in a record-breaking enrollment of 12,884 students for the fall semester.

As we reflect over the last year, we are also grateful for many things at OTC. We are grateful for our students and our community in which we serve, and the faculty and staff that make OTC such a wonderful college to work. We are also grateful for the support and volunteerism of our Board of Trustees and our Foundation Board of Directors.

With the generosity of our 673 donors this year, we were able to award 192 Foundation Scholarships, to help 60 students through the Student Emergency Fund and to establish 11 new scholarships, including the Fallen Soldier Scholarship for dependents and spouses of service members killed while serving active duty in the military. We also continued to make progress in our Imagine.Invest.Inspire. Major Gifts Campaign and, to date, have raised nearly $4 million.

All of this would not be possible without the generosity and support of each of you. Thank you for continuing to make OTC a premier community college.  On behalf of the faculty and staff at OTC, I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Charlie & Mary Beth O'Reilly Create
Endowed Scholarship Fund
The OTC Foundation has received a generous gift from the Charlie and Mary Beth O'Reilly Family Foundation. The donation will create the Charlie and Mary Beth O'Reilly Scholarship and will assist students with financial need.

The O'Reilly's have given the money in support of the Student Scholarship Initiative, a part of the OTC Foundation's major gifts Capital Campaign.

"A single scholarship can be the deciding factor for a student who is unsure of whether they can afford to continue their education," said Cliff Davis, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the OTC Foundation.  "This gift, and the scholarship it will establish, will have a direct impact on the lives of our students.  We are grateful to the O'Reillys for their continued support."

Larry and Donna Snyder Establish
Trustee Scholarship
Mr. Larry SnyderThe OTC Foundation has received a gift from Larry and Donna Snyder.  Mr. Snyder is the owner of Larry Snyder & Company, and is the current President of the College's Board of Trustees.  The gift will create a Trustees Scholarship, which will be specifically designated for students with financial need living within the College's taxing district.

"Mr. Snyder has been an active member of our Board and a strong advocate for the College for many years," said Dr. Hal Higdon, president of Ozarks Technical Community College. "We are grateful for this gift and the financial assistance it will provide for our students."

"Creating a new scholarship is a gift that will directly and immediately benefit the students who need it most," explained Cliff Davis, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the OTC Foundation.  "We appreciate the Snyders' support of the community they have helped to build."
