OTC Brings Robotics Training to SW Missouri
DTMPOzarks Technical Community College has partnered with Detroit Tool Metal Products Co. to directly support job training for as many as 250 new employees for DTMP's expansion in Lebanon.  These jobs will have an average wage of $12 - $15.75 per hour and will sustain between $6 to over $8 million in annual salaries before providing any multiplier effect.

This Center for Excellence demonstrates a coordinated approach to developing advanced manufacturing skills at a time when there is a high demand for state-of-the-art robotic training. The Center will also serve as the first within the Midwest in delivering a total workforce advanced manufacturing multi-skill training facility with leadership, team building, blue print reading, safety/OSHA, welding inspections, engineering, and fixture analysis to name a few. This will "skill-up" the region's unemployed and incumbent welding workforce to meet the immediate needs of DTMP's new 250 robotic welders, and also the needs of the region's advanced manufacturing companies.

This accelerated job training program will aid current displaced workers in enhancing their skills for employment opportunities. The program will include more than 200 hours of advanced manufacturing skills training taking place over seven weeks. The cost of the training is $7320. Applicants for this new job training program will be drawn from the ten career centers who are currently serving some 900 dislocated job seekers with welding certification or experience. This pool of 900 only represents the two immediate counties nearest Lebanon, Missouri. With some of the recent layoffs and plant closures within the 22-county region, it is believed that many more people have entry-level welding experience that would allow them to move to better-paying employment if they had additional training. Interested applicants should contact their local career center to be prequalified.
Developing an IT Talent Pipeline for SW Missouri
Information Technology has been identified by the state as a high growth industry. This industry is projected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy or affect the growth of other industries. Consequently, it's vitally important for southwest Missouri to have a talent pipeline to fill these upcoming jobs.

The Center for Workforce Development is initiating the development of an IT consortium in southwest Missouri for the purpose of attracting, retaining and developing the IT talent in the area to remain competitive in today's global marketplace. The mission of this public/private partnership is to serve as a resource for those wanting to stay informed on what's happening with tech-talented people in southwest Missouri.

Stakeholders in the consortium will include:
·         IT professionals
·         Businesses that hire or utilize IT professionals and their services
·         Educational institutions
·         Employment services
·         Local government agencies
·         Anyone interested in keeping SW MO competitive in the global IT marketplace

Visit Greater St. Louis Works, to see how a similar public-private initiative has been successful in providing an IT talent pipeline to that area.

Winning Government Contracts Seminar
Heartland PTACEvery year, federal, state and local governments spend billions of dollars on goods and services.  Federal purchasing offices are often required to "set aside" contracts [or portions of contracts] for exclusive bidding by small and/or minority owned businesses. Major prime contractors are required to subcontract part of their work out to small firms. How does a company become of aware of what services are bid and how does one participate in subcontracts?

OTC's Center for workforce Development is partnering with Heartland PTAC [Procurement Technical Assistance Center] to host an introductory seminar on Winning Government Contracts - The First Steps on Friday, October 16 from 9-Noon. The seminar is free but seating is limited, so contact CWD@otc.edu to reserve your space today.  Please include attendee name and company.

The lead center of Heartland PTAC, is located in the School of Business at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin, MO. Heartland PTAC has other full-time offices on the campus of University of Missouri - Kansas City, and a satellite office in Wichita, Kansas.

MSSU personnel will be on hand to conduct the seminar.  OTC and MSSU will also be providing one-on-one counseling to businesses through Heartland PTAC by appointment. Heartland PTAC is funded in part by the Department of Defense, which administers the congressional program. There are 90 PTACs throughout the country.
