2009 INAUGURAL EDITION |
 |
|
I am pleased to share with you some good news from campus. The adage that we are tested by adversity has proven true this fall and the faculty, staff and students have passed that test with flying colors.
Dean can and will weather this turbulent economic time—our faculty and staff continue to give 110% and we continue to transform the lives of our students. I am confident that because we are an institution with a clear vision and courage, we will move forward decisively and creatively while others might flounder.
There are tangible reasons for feeling good about Dean College: the opening of the new Library Learning Commons, the national success of our football team, and the outstanding dance performances. Also, we just received word that our production of “Public Speech, Private Thought,” written by faculty member Craig Handel, was selected to be one of the six productions to be performed at the Region I Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Our production will be performed on January 29 at 3:30 p.m. at Fitchburg State College. It is indeed an honor to have been selected from all of the colleges and universities in New England who entered their productions. These successes and the general mood of optimism that permeates the campus reaffirm that Dean is a special place.
For all of us who care deeply about Dean, we have much to be thankful for and optimistic about. From the Dean College family, I wish you and your family a very happy and healthy New Year.
Sincerely,

Paula M. Rooney, Ed.D.

“Dean College played such an important role in my life as it created an environment for major personal growth and maturity that is the foundation for who I am today. I am so grateful for my experience at Dean and remember fondly my classmates, the faculty, and the football program. It is my pleasure and, in a sense, my obligation to give back and support Dean so the current students receive the same experience that I did.”
William Dyess, ’76 DJC

The men’s football team completed a dream season this fall, winning its second consecutive Northeast Football Conference title with a 10-1 record. This team also earned the second trip to an NJCAA bowl game in the history of the College. The Bulldogs traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the Graphic Edge Bowl in November. The team lost the bowl game to Iowa Central Community College, 20-10. Although the team returned unsuccessful in their bowl bid, it had a terrific season overall and we are proud of our football team's accomplishments on and off the field. In addition to the bowl invitation, Head Coach Todd Vasey was named NEFC Coach-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year.
The men’s soccer team enjoyed the ninth straight winning season, finishing with an excellent 10-5 record under first-year coach John Andrade. Andrade, a former All Big-East player at Syracuse, guided the Bulldogs to the Region XXI championship game, where they lost to Massasoit Community College.
The women’s soccer team went 8-10 this fall, winning the most games in the program since 1998. Coach Jim Hopkins recruited a strong base of freshmen this year and they played competitive soccer in every game. We look forward to building on their successes next fall.

Alternative Spring Break Program: Dean Students to Travel to Prague
Seventeen students will be heading to Prague, in the Czech Republic, this March as part of an alternative spring break program. Myron Schmidt, Ed.D., Dean, School of the Arts; and Jim Beauregard, Professor of Theatre, are organizing the trip which will include theatre performances, concerts, museum tours and operas.
The students will be interacting and joining students from American University and the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. Students will be attending performances every night. On the first night, they will attend a production of the opera, Don Giovanni, performed at the Estates Theatre — the very theatre Mozart conducted the first production of Don Giovanni.
Students will leave on March 7 and return March 16. “This will be an exceptionally, extraordinary experience for our students to explore a city full of history and culture,” said Schmidt. The city has buildings from the 9th Century to the Art Nouveau period — Gothic to Romanesque.
The students going to Prague are all enrolled in IDS 204 — History and Culture of Prague, which Dr. Schmidt will be teaching to prepare the students for the trip. When they return, students will reflect on their experiences and each student will write a final paper.

Giving “Reunion” a whole new definition
Last year we reported on Dean alumnus and current Suffolk/Dean student, Gabriel Dut Bethou, who discovered that his mother and sisters, whom he had believed were dead after an attack on his village in Sudan many years ago, were in fact alive. After many months of work trying to reunite and bring his mother and sisters to the United States, he still had many immigration obstacles to overcome. To expedite the reunion, Gabriel has travelled to Juba in the Sudan to reunite with his family after more than 15 years. He was recently profiled in the Franklin and Milford, MA newspapers. To read the article, click here:

We hope to bring you the story of Gabriel’s journey in an upcoming issue. To learn more about him and his efforts to help other refugees, visit www.outofsudan.org

WGAO – Power 88 Radio to begin streaming on website
WGAO—Dean’s 175-watt FM radio station has long been a training ground for Dean students—in communications, music and the intricacies of broadcasting. Unfortunately, unless you lived within a 20-mile radius of the campus, you didn’t get to hear it. That will change in 2009. By late January, WGAO will begin streaming its broadcast on the Dean College website — www.dean.edu
Listeners anywhere on the planet can tune in to hear the College’s broadcasts online. Associate Professor of Communications and WGAO-FM Operations Manager, Vic Michaels, has worked with Chief Information Officer, Darrell Kulesza, to both stream the signal and create new web space on the College site to promote the station and its valuable resources for students looking at a broadcasting career.
“We’re really excited that after many years of trying, we’re finally able to stream WGAO’s signal,” said Michaels. “We’ve launched many broadcast personalities from Dean, including Greg Dickerson '92 of WEEI, and Joe Cortese '81 of Oldies 103.”
