Hi!  My name is Mocha!

Mocha in Feb

I am one lucky girl!  My life was spared because of the big hearts of the Gateway Pet Guardians volunteers.  I was set to die at animal control , but was rescued on the very day of!  How lucky is that?!?  I'm a good girl - an old soul, they say.  I love people of all ages as well as other animals.  I love to play, cuddle and shower you with kisses!  Will you be able to open your heart and home for me?  I'm a very deserving girl ... with a second chance at life ... and I'm ready to live it!  I am spayed, up to date on my shots, and housebroken.  I'm good with kids, dogs and even cats!

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight
Meet SammieB (formerly Smoky)

Sammie1I learned about SammieB (formerly known as Smoky) from GPG Volunteer Coordinator, Melissa Stiles - we attend the YMCA together.  We had been promised a dog by a family so we had been 'grooming' our children for pet care.  Unexpectedly, the family backed out on us.  I mentioned to Melissa what we were looking for in a dog, and she immediately thought of Smoky.  We arranged a meeting at a an event in Soulard.  We filled out the application on the spot and worked with Gateway over the next few weeks to bring Sammie to his forever home.  We LOVE SammieB - the B is in honor of his foster family, who had dubbed him "Bear".  Sam is an amazing and well-loved addition to our family.  He loves children (especially our daughters) and other animals.  Sam even has a new found friend in our family guinea pig, Hershey.  Hershey likes to drink out of Sam's water bowl, and Sam insists on enjoying morning carrots with Hershey!

Sammie ChristmasSam spends his weekdays with his head in Grandma Emily's lap while she sings to him.  He faithfully watches out the window on weekends and school-day afternoons to watch for the neighborhood kids to come by so he can go out in the backyard and play with them.  Sam is VERY talented as well - he can sit, dance, whisper, speak, shake paws, lie down, and jump up, and will also bark out "let's GO!" in a freakishly Scooby-Doo way when it is requested of him.   He was most recently in the GPG Fashion Show and took part in the Walk out of Darkness fundraiser last fall to raise awareness for teen suicide.  Sam also unearthed a large bone in a nearby deserted yard that was handed over the to the Illinois State Police.  Sam has brought much excitement to our lives!

A very heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who diligently voted for Gateway Pet Guardians during Monsanto's recent Grow St. Louis contest!!

In 2011, Monsanto pledged to help St. Louis grow by awarding quarterly grants to local projects.

We were fortunate enough to come away with the 2nd Place award of $10,000.00!  We couldn't have done it without all of you ... our loyal supporters, volunteers, family and friends - so thank you!

Stay tuned for more information on how we will be using the award later this year!

About Us.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available. We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/ outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!

A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.

When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
