Hi!  My name is Ellie!

Ellie

Ellie is a 1-1/2 year old spayed female who was found after being dumped on Interstate 255.  She was two weeks away from delivering puppies and was heart worm positive.  We helped deliver 7 healthy puppies who have all found their forever home so now it is Ellie's turn!

Ellie weighs approximately 42 pounds.  She is one of the most amazing personalities of all the animals we have rescued over the years.  She is super sweet and loves nothing more than getting love from her foster parents.  Ellie gets along well with other dogs (she loves playing with her foster brothers!) and her foster family cat.  She is a true puppy at heart and loves to play, but she can also be very calm and relax with the best of them.  She is housebroken and kennel trained.  She also walks great on a leash and is not a puller.  Ellie loves car rides.

Unfortunately Ellie has not had the best life.  She was definitely abused in her past and is also missing part of her right ear.  She is super sensitive to loud voices and touch.  She would do best in a home that is relatively peaceful.  A home without small children would be best, because she is easily scared.  She is not aggressive at all, but needs to be loved and not chased. She would also do great with an older couple.  Ellie is a true 'mutt' in every sense of the word.  The vet said she may be part shepard, but for sure she has some herding instinct in her.  Once you meet Ellie she will be sure to steal your heart, just like she has stolen ours!

Puppy smooches,

Ellie

What's on your mind?
A letter from Melissa Stiles, Volunteer Coordinator

Melissa StilesI joined Gateway Pet Guardians just over two years ago. I started out as a puppy foster, began attending events, meeting new people, and learning more about GPG. I fell in love with the entire group. Since the beginning, I knew I wanted to give more to the group, but wasn't sure what I could do or where I would fit. GPG suddenly found itself without a volunteer coordinator so they needed somebody to step in and cover a few adoption events. Within just a few short months, I landed the position of Volunteer Coordinator. I have spent the past year and a half helping grow the volunteer side of this amazing organization, with much success, thanks to our wonderful volunteers!

Volunteering with Gateway Pet Guardians is, without question, one of the most gratifying things I have ever done in my life. It's a great way to meet new people, network, and most importantly, help stray dogs and cats, as directly or indirectly as you desire. Volunteering is one of the most important roles with GPG. Without our awesome volunteers, we couldn't hold adoption events or host fundraisers, and we certainly wouldn't have donations of all types coming in to help our group succeed.

If you already volunteer with GPG, great! We look forward to hearing from you again in the very near future. If you haven't jumped on board yet, it's never too late! We are hosting a Volunteer Winter Warm Up and we ask that ALL of our volunteers join us. Whether you are a well-seasoned volunteer or brand new to the group, whether you attend events, or help with the clerical side, please plan to join us on Saturday, January 28, 2012, for this very informative gathering. GPG is growing by leaps and bounds and is making many positive changes we want all of you to be a part of in the future! Bring a friend who might be interested, too. The more, the merrier! (Time and place are yet to be determined, but will be announced very soon.)

I look forward to seeing all of you in 2012 and beyond!

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight
Meet Thor

I recently decided to adopt "Thor," a six-month-old kitten rescued by Gateway Pet Guardians.  He's only been with me a short while, but he's already fitting into his new home nicely, and is a joy to have around.  He keeps me on my toes, and brings a lot of fun into my life.  I originally took him as part of a temporary foster-sitter situation, but it wasn't long before I realized I didn't want to give him up!

I don't know anything about his life before he was rescued, but I'm sure the details were far from warm and happy.  I'd love to save all the stray animals out there myself, but since I can't, I am especially thankful that there are organizations like GPG that have the dedication and the means to do it.

I have always felt that we aren't just supposed to take care of other people ... we also have a duty to care for the animals that share our planet.  I've been telling other people I know that they should visit Gateway Pet Guardians and consider adopting a dog or cat from an organization like theirs.  I hope some of them will.  Nothing would make me happier than to see all those sweet faces get the warm and loving homes they deserve!

How Award Money Would Be Used

One of the most vital parts of the mission of Gateway Pet Guardians is to increase the awareness of responsible pet ownership and animal advocacy in the Metro East. This funding will be used to further that mission and reach out to at-risk youth to develop their leadership skills and help them become animal advocates in their own communities. Through educational programs, the Gateway Junior Pet Advocates Program will introduce youth to the realities of animal welfare and help them gain important skills in handling animals in distress, which they often see in their communities. Students in the program will develop valuable leadership skills while giving back to the community and saving the lives of animals in their own neighborhoods. In addition, Gateway will work with schools and youth programs in the Metro East to teach children about animal care and responsible pet ownership at a young age. In addition, Gateway Pet Guardians will in tandem with low-cost spay or neuter clinics to offer educational programs to residents and pet owners to break the cycle of overpopulation. GPG is committed to improving the communities within the Metro East area, and believe education is a vital link. This funding will cover the cost of educational materials, educational scholarships, and program development materials. This is a project that we believe wholeheartedly can change communities and appreciate your support.

Contribution to St. Louis

Gateway Pet Guardians was founded in 2004 through the combined efforts of five extraordinary women with a passion for rescuing animals. Prior to that, while driving through East St. Louis in 1995, P.J. Hightower - an avid animal lover - took notice of the numerous stray dogs running through the streets. Instead of turning her back on the problem, P.J. did something about it. On that day and nearly every day thereafter - and every consecutive day since 2001 - P.J. has made the trip across the river from her home in St. Louis, bags of dog food in tow, and fed the dogs she saw on the streets, paying for it out of her own pocket. In 2004, Gateway Pet Guardians was formed, and began to grow and save more animals. P.J. now goes through approximately 1,000 pounds of dog food per month and GPG rescues over 100 dogs and cats per year in the St. Louis Metro area. The harsh street conditions in the Metro East prove to be a challenge for even the toughest of breeds. Every day, Gateway Pet Guardians encounters dogs that have been shot, have severely embedded collars, fresh wounds from fighting with other dogs, and heartworm positive. As many of the dogs that are rescued have severe psychological issues and need interaction, they are placed in the care of a foster family until they are adopted. Dedicated to being a proactive community partner for the St. Louis Region, Gateway Pet Guardians is partnering with the communities in the Metro East to implement educational programs for responsible ownership, along with low-cost spay and neuter, and vaccination clinics. Gateway Pet Guardians is diligently working to bridge the gap in service between St. Louis and the Metro East areas.

About Us.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available. We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/ outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!

A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.

When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
