Hi!  My name is Em ...

EmI am a female Laborador Retriever/ Beagle mix.  I'm considered "medium" in size (26 - 60 pounds).

I was found  wandering the streets with another little girl that is probably my daughter.  Each day, I would wait for my rescuers to come and take me home.  It finally happened and I couldn't be happier!  I love belly rubs and giving kisses.  I am so thankful to be off the streets and in a home that loves me.

Em is approximately 1-1/2 years old and a wonderful girl!  She is spayed and house broken.   Em is also crate trained, up to date on shots, and good with cats!  Em is one smart cookie!  She will be a perfect addition to your family.

Puppy smooches,

Em

What's on your mind?
A letter from Tara Kenny, Education/Volunteer Committee Member

Tara KennyI began volunteering with Gateway Pet Guardians about four years ago.  I learned about GPG in 2007 from Executive Director Jamie Case.  Jamie and I used to work together and as she became more involved with the group,  I couldn't resist when she asked me to help out at adoption events!  Now, here I am today, currently wearing many "little" hats with this group.  I am an administrative assistant to Jamie Case, part of both the Education and Volunteer Committees, assist at some of our adoption events, and a lot of "behind the scenes" work, such as entering each adoptable pet into our online database.  Animal rescue has become a huge passion of mine, all thanks to this amazing organization!

When I first began volunteering, I had a hard time seeing the dogs coming off the street battered, bruised, and broken.  It was not something I was used to seeing on a daily basis.  I am not entirely sure I will ever "get over" seeing things like this, but I've changed my mindset to look past it and know what the future holds for these precious, loving animals.  And this is exactly the image GPG is currently transitioning to - POSITIVITY!  Rescue groups worldwide use the negativity of photography and wording to get the "sympathy vote" ... Gateway Pet Guardians used to be one of them; however, you will begin to see a change in many aspects of our organization - effective immediately!

Positive photos, biographies, media/advertising, adoptable pet inquiry responses, and more will all be on the forefront of our rescue from now on.  Positive thoughts create positive outcomes. Our rescued animals deserve the most positive way of life possible.  Gateway Pet Guardians is going to make sure they get just that - a positively happy, healthy, and WONDERFUL life!

If you are looking to work with animals in a positive setting, become a volunteer!  For more information about volunteering, click here.

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight
Meet Mac (formerly Zanzabar)
Mac1I found Mac (formerly Zanzabar) online at Petfinder when I started the search for a companion for my older dog, Lucy.  From the first time Mac came to visit with his foster mom, Julie, I knew he was going to be a great addition to our family.  He is so full of life and such an adventurer.  Mac is actually short for MacGyver, which is what we renamed him because we felt like he was so daring.

 Mac2

Mac is always the comedian and brings a lot of joy to our lives.  One of his favorite games is to "unmake" the bed, tossing off blankets and pillows with gusto.  He also has quite a knack for leaping down stairs and from one piece of furniture to another.  But perhaps his most endearing feature is his enormous set of ears.  He makes me laugh every day and reminds me not to take life too seriously.

Dedicated Volunteer of the Month!

Karinna Lozano

Karinna LozanoI learned about Gateway Pet Guardians through my employer.  My company was sponsoring a trivia night benefitting GPG and I attended a presentation by GPG Executive Director, Jamie Case, one afternoon.  I felt an instant connection to GPG since for more than eight years, I have been supporting animal shelters and rescue groups in my country - Peru, South America.

I recently joined GPG's Associate Board to help with fundraising events so we are able to continue rescuing more dogs!  I have also begun to volunteer at events as time permits.  The experience is invaluable.  There are a lot of people that want to help but they don't know how.  As volunteers, our job is to explain the different options that they might have!!

It doesn't matter if you have a full-time job or family commitments - there is always something that you can do to help. As an example, I am currently doing a candy fundraiser at work sellling $1,00 candy bars!! There is no such thing as an activity or idea being "too small."  Every little bit counts when we are talking about helping animals. About Us.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available. We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/ outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!

A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.

When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
