Gateway Pet of the Month...

Melvin

Let me introduce Melvin to you. He is a 4-5 year old Lhasa Apso who is a DREAM!!!!! Currently he is a little 'solid' at 35, he is on his way to losing a few pounds. But who isn't? Melvin is crate trained and housebroken. He knows how to sit and does it quite well. He is leash trained and you would think you are in a dream, a dog that doesn't pull but wants to just walk by you. He pretty much ignores his cat siblings. Good with children and other dogs he's a dream. Melvin is quite the love bug. So if you are looking for an adorable little man to make part of your family, please look no further.Contact us soon as we do not think Melvin will be with Gateway Pet Guardians very long.

Puppy smooches,

Melvin

What's on your mind?
A letter from Kara Dalton, Educational Committee Coordinator

Kara's headshot"Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know." (Daniel J. Boorstin)

Even though I just recently found this quote, I've lived this for a long time.

I knew a long time ago that I wanted to be an educator; to open minds to the world around them, and provide the key to doors previously thought forever locked to the learner.  This summer I was given the opportunity to lead Gateway's Education Committee, and I couldn't be more excited to bring the message of proper pet care to the communities we serve.

Educating these communities may be a challenge, but I prefer to look at the people we hope to reach as a clean slate, ready to be taught!  Many residents know little about proper vet care, spaying and neutering, or even basic animal nutrition.  Our efforts, along with the St. Louis PetLovers Coalition, will focus strongly on spay/neuter, but will also provide information and resources on all other areas of pet care. Consider the positive impact this can make - if we can convince even one resident to spay their dog, we can help keep thousands of puppies from being born and thrown into the dismal life of a stray.

Our Committee is kicking off our efforts with a Health and Wellness Fair in Centreville on Saturday, October 8.  We will be offering residents a chance to get free dog food, to learn about safe handling practices, and to ask a veterinarian animal health-related questions.  Those who attend can also get a free health screening for the humans in the family, and enjoy free refreshments provided by the City of Centreville.  We will need lots of help that day, so please be on the lookout for those emails!

Gateway has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years, and the Education Committee is another important step in changing how the Metro East communities view pets in our society.  We can rescue a dog on the streets and give it a better life, but through community education can we prevent that dog from becoming a stray in the first place.

As we move forward, we need volunteers with lots of different skill sets, not just those who are educators.  If anyone is interested in joining the education committee and being a part of this incredible undertaking, please contact me at kara.ballinger@slps.org.

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight
Meet Bailey

Bailey smiling croppedWe adopted Bailey in January of 2010.  She's come a long way in the last year, and is much more comfortable around new people.  Bailey looks forward to doggy daycare, and loves to play outside with her sister.  She has become quite the cuddle-bug, and loves to snuggle up in bed.

Bailey enjoys long walks around the neighborhood, but she has also recently become a runner.  She was a great training partner for the GO! St. Louis half marathon!

Bailey is full of love, and her whole body wags when we walk through the door!  We're so happy to have her as part of our family.

Dedicated Volunteer of the Month!

Sheila Ford

Sheila FordI'm Sheila Ford, hailing from the Garden State of New Jersey (fuhgeddaboudit!) but currently residing in Shiloh, IL.  I got involved with GPG quite by accident.  My hairdresser told me about a Belleville organization called Halo that I could volunteer with.  One of the first emails I received from Halo was about volunteering with GPG.  Tails and Tees and Wags and Wine was my first event.  Because I liked the people, the philosophy of GPG, and the events, it was a no-brainer I was meant to concentrate my animal efforts with this fine group!

I have been in the Air Force for almost 24 years and am a Senior Master Sergeant who is the Avionics Superintendent at Air Mobility Command Headquarters.  I also operate a small pet sitting business.  I'm proud to say at least 75% of our clients own rescues!  In my spare time (huh? What's that???) I like to read, make cards, hang outside and watch football (go Eagles!) with my husband, amongst many other things.  And I'm happy to add, my oldest son Cody has come along to volunteer with me and that makes me truly proud! (Any single 18-23 year olds out there??)  :-)

Pictured with me is my rescue, Dylan, a Beagle-something that I adopted from Dogwood Farm Sanctuary in Troy, Missouri.  Cindy

Crawford I will never be ... but Dylan has potential!

Low Cost Spay/Neuter

Spaying and neutering your pets is one of the most important steps a pet owner can take toward making their dog or cat's life a long and healthy one.

Myths and Facts of Spaying/Neutering

Myth:  Pets will get fat and lazy if they are spayed/neutered.

Fact:  The only reason animals become fat and lazy is if they are overfed and under-exercised, or are diagnosed with thyroid problems.

About Us.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available.

A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.

When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.

We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
