Gateway Pet of the Month...

Rodeo is high-energy and is all puppy. She likes to run and play. With that being said we are asking for families that have children over the age of 10 apply to adopt her. She needs a home where she will receive training and plenty of exercise.

We do offer an incentive to take her to obedience training, once you have sent us a completion certificate we will send you $25 as a thank you!!! Training builds a bond between dog and owner as well as giving you a well mannered dog.

Rodeo is absolutely adorable, loving and very smart. She loves to be with her humans, but is also ok on her own when she needs to be. She loves affection, car rides and loves to play with other dogs, big and small. She is crate-trained, doggy-door trained and doing extremely well with housebreaking. If there was one word (or three) that would accurately describe Rodeo, it would be "Happy-Go-Lucky". She literally has a bounce in her step. Nothing really bothers this sweet girl.

Puppy smooches,

What's on your mind?
A letter from Jamie Case,
Executive Director

Each new season brings different challenges for a rescue like ours.  Winter brings freezing temperatures, spring brings an insurgence of puppies and summer, well summer brings horrible heat and yes, more puppies.  In the past six months, we have successfully rescued quite a few of the "baby-makers" as we like to call them.  With their rescue, they are spayed and fostered while waiting for adoption.  This has definitely helped with the puppy production.  With a decrease in puppies, we can focus on rescuing the adult dogs and rehabilitating them before adoption.  This may be the most exciting part of rescue, turning a homeless street dog into a family pet.  It really is an amazing transformation!  I would invite each of you to foster and experience it for yourself!

This summer brings some good news to the rescue!  We are moving forward on a potential property for a Gateway Pet Guardians' facility.  This facility will house an educational classroom, small spay/neuter space and a few kennels for emergency rescues.  Please stay tuned as this unfolds.  There is a lot of red tape when purchasing property for an animal shelter.  If all goes as planned, we should be ready for construction (rehab of an existing building) within the next couple of months!  We foresee the construction costing between $200,000-$300,000.  That is quite a bit more than the $56,000 we have in the shelter fund.  We will need everyone's support to pull this together!  It is so exciting for every one of us to see this finally coming to light!

As always, thank you for being a supporter of GPG and we are looking forward to a successful summer of rescue, rehabilitation and shelter construction!

A BIG THANKS TO PURINA!

Our wonderful neighbor, Purina donated over 4000lbs of food to Gateway Pet Guardians this month!  PJ, the street pups and our fosters are going to be very happy campers.  We wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped us with the pick up and delivery of the food.

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers that helped with physically loading the bags into the vehicles then unloading at the warehouse.  It was 97 degrees but everyone banned together and charged through!

The Smug Mutt

Thank you to The Smug Mutt (www.thesmugmutt.com) owners and their van for coming out in the heat to transport.  The Smug Mutt makes yummy treats, fun apparel and custom embroidery for pets and their people.  Check out their site and products today!

Custom PoolsWe would also like to thank Custom Pools, Inc. (www.customizedpools.com) for providing one of their dump trucks for the delivery.  Without the large vehicle, we would have needed numerous other trucks.  Custom Pools, Inc. builds in-ground swimming pools and backyard escapes in the St. Louis and Metro East areas.  Give them a call for your new backyard!

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight

Tweed is about 1 1/2 years old and is the scruffiest little thing I've ever seen. She was only a few months old when we got her. We were told that she was rescued from a dilapidated, abandoned building with her sister. She is a very sweet, timid girl. She loves other dogs but is very scared of people she doesn't know. It took her a while to warm up to us when we first brought her home. She has completed three dog-training classes at Petco and I think those really helped. She even won 1st place in their Halloween costume contest last year for dressing up as a Petco "people trainer." Yes, seriously. :)

Once she got used to us, she started jumping all over us as soon we walked in the door. She sleeps in bed with us every night; she always cuddles up to one of us. She usually spends most of her time running around our backyard. I think she'd stay out there all day and night if we let her! She's only actually barked twice... that's it. Two barks. :) Both times were to get our attention, and it definitely worked! She doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body and is a total sweetheart. She's got a lot of funny quirks and tons of personality. We just love her.

We are so lucky that we found Tweed!

Low Cost Spay/Neuter

Spaying and neutering your pets is one of the most important steps a pet owner can take toward making their dog or cat's life a long and healthy one.

Myths and Facts of Spaying/Neutering

Myth: Pets will get fat and lazy if they are spayed/neutered.

Fact: The only reason animals become fat and lazy is if they are overfed and under-exercised, or are diagnosed with thyroid problems.

Summer heat can be deadly for our dogs. Every year there are many tragic cases of dogs dying in the heat.  It's too much for humans so imagine wearing a fur coat and not being able to sweat, that's how dogs feel!  Dogs who are effected most by heat are older dogs, young puppies, dogs with short snouts such as Shitzus, Pugs, Bulldogs, etc., dogs bred for cold climates such as Huskies and Malamutes and dogs with black coats.  If you must have your dog out in the heat make sure he/she has plenty of water, shade and a wading pool is helpful as well.  Walk dogs early in the morning before the sun has had a chance to heat the pavement and burn paw pads, an early morning walk is very nice and peaceful as well.  NEVER EVER leave your dog in the car, even with the windows cracked, not even for 5 minutes.  Cars heat up to a deadly temperature incredibly fast.  Best advice is for you both is to stay in the A/C as much as possible and enjoy a safe and comfortable summer!

Dogs are not people dressed up in fur coats,

and to deny them their nature is to do them great harm.

About Us.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available.

A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.

When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.

We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
