| |
This gorgeous, mello boy has been looking for his forever home. Unfortunately many black dogs are overlooked. But please don't let that prevent you from meeting this AMAZING puppy. He is six months old and I cannot say enough good things about him. He is friendly, loving, GREAT with other dogs.
Fredo is crate trained, leash trained and OH YES HOUSEBROKEN!!!!! He is still a puppy and will be till he's over a year old, so don't worry about him being boring. He is anything but.
Please only applicants with a fenced yard apply. Fredo is curious and needs to be able to explore the world safely. Fredo would be a fantastic addition to your home, please contact us for more information!!!
Puppy smooches, Fredo

What's on your mind? A letter from Lisa Boyer, Board of Directors

SPRING INTO ACTION!
Spring is an inspirational time of the year and for me it represents a time
to renew, recharge, and re-examine what I am able to contribute to my
community - so the invitation I received to join Gateway Pet Guardian's
(GPG's) Board of Directors last month could not have come at a better time. Not only was I ready to embrace a new challenge, I was thrilled to join such a passionate and energetic team dedicated to rescuing pets in the St. Louis area. My husband and I are huge fans of P.J. Hightower and the GPG organization.
If you have not heard about the phenomenal work Gateway Pet Guardians does for our community, I encourage you to invest time to learn about it now. For starters, explore our website, join our fan page on Facebook, tell your friends and co-workers about us, or register for one of our upcoming fundraiser events. Next, if you have not seen the award winning documentary "Gateway Guardians," please watch it to see firsthand what our founder P.J. Hightower contributes to these animals and our community every day. Once you understand the dedication Gateway Pet Guardians has to rescuing animals, administering veterinary care, and finding forever homes, I hope you'll be encouraged to ask "what can I do to help?"
We are growing quickly and getting closer to our goal of building an animal shelter which will include a low cost Spay/Neuter Clinic and Education Center in East St. Louis. This facility will provide numerous opportunities to save animals that are currently in dire need of help. To reach our goal and better serve the homeless animals in our community, I am asking you to get involved and join our mission. There are many ways you can contribute to our cause, including fostering animals, volunteering, providing forever (adoptive) homes, and, of course, through donations. I encourage you to get involved and help positively impact animals in our community. We are counting on your momentum to help GPG spring forward in 2011!

ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight
|
These are 3 Gateway Pet Guardian dogs adopted to KSDK-TV "Show Me St. Louis" reporter Julie Tristan. She tried to foster them, but fell in love and adopted all 3. From left (Simone, Molly, & Champ)...Simone and Molly are sisters. They are from a litter that was rescued when Show Me St. Louis was doing their first story with PJ and the GPG. The mother from the litter of 8 was rightfully named "Show Me" (she was rescued from the streets too)....Champ is an adorable dog that was wondering the East St. Louis Streets with his sisters and brothers. Champ's birth mom is Ms. November in the Gateway Pet Guardians calendar. These 3 little sweets make 5 dogs for Julie and her boyfriend "Bez." They are huge dog lovers and say their lives would not be complete without each one of them. Simone, Molly, and Champ love to play together each day, tug of war is their favorite. The cutest thing is when they find a big stick in the back yard and carry it around together.

Dedicated Volunteer of the Month!

Sara Govero has been a wonderful addition to the GPG family. With her corporate ties, she was able to donate numerous items and money to the Pasta for Pets event and the Tees & Tails golf tournament, including silent auction baskets, hole sponsorship, and even a barrel of booze! Thank you, Sara for your donations and your assistance at many of our adoption and fundraising events! We hope that you stay a part of our organization for years to come.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter
|
Spaying and neutering your pets is one of the most important steps a pet owner can take toward making their dog or cat's life a long and healthy one.
Myths and Facts of Spaying/Neutering
Myth: Pets will get fat and lazy if they are spayed/neutered.
Fact: The only reason animals become fat and lazy is if they are overfed and under-exercised, or are diagnosed with thyroid problems.

My advice this month is to learn about dog behavior. Understanding how your dog thinks and why he behaves the way he does will help you immensely with any training you attempt. There are several good books out on dog behavior. My favorite is, "For the Love of a Dog" by Patricia McConnell, PhD. She's fun to read and it is packed with very interesting information about dog behavior. If you're not a big reader, watch "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic Channel, especially the newer 2011 episodes. Cesar Millan speaks their (dog's) language. Patricia McConnell has DVDs at the library also.
If you need professional help with training, please contact me, Jamie Kelly/certified positive reinforcement trainer, @ 314-623-9879.
Dogs are not people dressed up in fur coats,
and to deny them their nature is to do them great harm.

PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates, and rescues when a home is available.
A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.
When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
