Gateway Pet of the Month...

DOGS ON THE STREET THAT NEED A FOSTER HOME OR BETTER YET THEIR FOREVER HOMES!!! There are so many dogs on the street that need their forever home. This is where you, the public, come into play. We are looking for foster homes that have an understanding of their history. So many of these strays just need a loving hand and patience and they will come around to be loving pets. Most of these dogs have never been inside a home, or walked up stairs. Dont let anyone ever tell you that an old dog cannot be trained, that is quite the contrary. These sweet dogs will be spay/neutered and given their vaccinations once they are pulled from the streets. Nina is the leader of her pack. She is the mom of Nigel and Nigella. We cannot pull her off of the street without being able to pull her adult children, as well. Nigel and Nigella would be lost without her. Nina is outgoing, loving, and would make anyone a fantastic dog. She wags her tail and is the first to come out when PJ whistles for the dogs to be fed in the morning. Nina would not take long to become a loving member of your home. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Nina please contact us, as she deserves her forever home.

What's on your mind? A letter from Jen Dolce, GPG board member.

Since I was a little girl, I have loved animals. Since I was a little girl, I have been exposed to the homeless animals of the "East Side." Growing up with a family who owns a business that sprawls across the city limits of East St. Louis and Alorton, seeing stray dogs was a normal occurrence. Not seeing a dog, or multiple dogs, roaming the streets would be odd. My family has always been active in supporting the rescue world due to our love of dogs. Because I witnessed firsthand and came in contact with many of these strays, I had firsthand experience working with a "rescue" operation before I even knew what the term meant, from a business standpoint. There have been numerous dogs that have roamed onto our property, and these "lucky" ones have been rescued and found their forever homes with our employees. We have always had our own little rescue -with a dog house in front of the main office and a jar of doggie treats next to the candy jar in the lobby. Pictures on the bulletin board in the copy room serve as a constant reminder of dogs rescued in the past. A huge dog trap in the conference room, a storage room with dog food, treats, and toys stacked on file cabinets are all ammunition on the perpetual battle with the East Side's pervasive problem. We do everything we can to help the dogs that we come in contact with. It may take days, months, or in one case years to get these feral four-legged creatures caught. But, when we do finally get them, we reassure them that this is the first day of the rest of their lives.
With all of that being said, my involvement with Gateway started in early 2009, as I reconnected with an old friend from high school, Jamie Case. Our passion for animals, especially the stray dogs on the East Side, became a common topic of our conversations. I started supporting Gateway by attending fundraisers, and in the summer of 2009, was approached and asked to join the board as the Treasurer. After college, I decided to turn my part time job at my family's company into my full time job. I accepted a position as the Controller and the combination of loving dogs and crunching numbers on a daily basis led me to accept my invitation as Gateway's Treasurer. It was, and is, the perfect opportunity for me to help the homeless dogs of the East Side by utilizing my knowledge of accounting and business.
Most of my work for Gateway is done behind the scenes. Many of you have probably only seen my name signed at the bottom of a tax letter, email, or check. I must say that I am often overwhelmed with the generosity of our supporters. We are all aware that money is not what makes Gateway the great organization it is, but without the monetary donations, we would not be able to rescue many of the animals that we do. The veterinary needs that so many of these animals require is unbelievable.
I am very grateful to be a part of such a great organization. It is absolutely amazing to me what this rescue has grown to be. This is just the beginning. We have so much that lies ahead of us as we continue to grow and fulfill our goal of building a shelter. As I bring this to a close, I find it appropriate to end this article with a popular dog quote, which happens to be my favorite. It describes the relationship between man and dog so well, especially the one I have with my own dog, who is, of course, a rescue.
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion." - Author Unknown |
ADOPTED! Pet Spotlight

Waylon is a Gateway Pet Guardians' rescue from East St. Louis in January 2010. He is featured in the Documentary and is the last little handsome guy being pulled out of some sort of vent where they were trying to keep warm. My husband and I fostered Waylon and his brother, Merle. Their mama couldn't deal with them anymore because their teeth were so sharp and they didn't want to give up nursing. So I went and picked them up from the temporary foster and brought them home. The funny thing is, I never wanted a boy dog....EVER..... BOY, did I change my mind!!! These little guys were adorable. We just LOVED their personalities, they were so dramatic and needy. Both were adopted out rather quickly. Waylon was returned because his adopter didn't have enough time for a dog. He had gone to puppy school and graduated at the top of his class. So he was well taken care of while he was away from us and it was obvious he was spoiled rotten. My husband and I decided we wanted to keep him. Maddi and Lexi are my other two furry kids, and they have warmly accepted him into our family. They have all blended together so well and now can't live without one another. Waylon LOVES playing rough with the girls. He has figured out that Maddi is the boss and she can play, but not get rough and Lexi is his BFF. He can be as rough as he wants with her (and vice versa)!! They just can't get enough of each other! J Every once in a while, the girls will gang up on him to keep him on his toes, LOL!!! He has adjusted well to our home and his sisters. He can't stand it if any one of us are out of sight....he has an absolute fit! He loves camping, swimming, sitting on our laps and practicing the tricks he learned in school. He is very lovable and gives very special kisses. If you have adopted a pet from Gateway Pet Guardians and would like to share your story, please contact Jamie at gatewaypetguardians@yahoo.com. |
Dedicated Volunteer of the Month

PJ Hightower is not only one of our founders, but also our most dedicated volunteer. Each and every morning (not missing one single day since 2001), PJ wakes up, loads her car with dog/cat food and boxes of Milk Bones. She drives to East St. Louis, IL and feeds numerous homeless animals. She names each one, knows their medical history, heat cycles, how many puppies they have had and what food they like. (Yes, the street dogs are particular.)
PJ was born in East St. Louis and began feeding the dogs sporadically in the mid 1980's when she would visit her sister in Illinois. She quit her corporate job and begin walking dogs for a living. She gives everything she has to help animals in need. She is their angel. PJ just turned 56 years old this past December 28th. She is truly an amazing woman!
PJ's dedication to these animals is the reason we are all here. She inspires everyone she meets to help these abandoned and mistreated animals. We encourage you to ride-a-long with PJ on one of her daily feedings. It is an awe-inspiring experience.
If you would like to schedule a date to ride with us, please email Jamie at gatewaypetguardians@yahoo.com. The Volunteer of the Month section is created to give special thanks to a volunteer each month. Without dedicated volunteers, we could not save the number of animals that we do. |
| Paws with Claus |

"Were you a good puppy this year?" That was the question Santa asked the adorable furbabies at the "Paws with Claus" event. On Dec. 10th, a number of Gateway Pet Guardian volunteers and foster babies headed out to Riverchase at Fenton, the beautiful new recreation center, for a morning with Santa.
The morning started with "Breakfast with Santa" for the human kids. The kids and parents enjoyed having puppies to visit with after they spent a few minutes with Santa. After the two-legged kids left, it was the canines' turn. Pups big and small dressed in their best took a turn with Santa to ask for Busy Bones, squeaky toys, and rawhides. Kenya, Welby, Friday, Boise, and Keeley all had been good puppies and got to go visit with Santa. Check out the photo of all the Gateway pups and volunteers who attended.

Train.

Marking/ hiking leg in the house: I recently adopted an 11 year old male chihuahua who I caught peeing in the house. At first I thought he was marking territory but after putting down puppy training pads I found out he'd been trained to go on them in the house. If you are having problems with a male hiking his leg you need to find out if he really can't hold it, is marking territory, or has been trained to go on paper/pads before addressing the problem.

PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates and rescues when a home is available.
A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.
When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
