December Featured Rescue Hugo
|
Hugo is one heck of a LOOKER!!! This five month old is going to be big. Hugo is GORGEOUS with his one blue and one green eye. He was found loose and we are lucky that Gateway had an open foster! Hugo gets along with his foster siblings. But definitely prefers female dogs over boy dogs.
So, if you are looking to add a gorgeous boy to your household, please be sure to contact us so that we can send you an adoption application. Hugo will only be adopted to families with children over 8 years old. Hugo is going to be a big boy and we do not want him to knock over any children unintentionally. He also will be adopted to someone with a fenced in backyard so that he can explore.

I will never forget the day that we rescued Hank.It was a very cold and bleak wintry day-the kind of day that makes you long for the summer. Hank was well known to PJ, and had moved to the top of the list to be rescued, as his health seemed to be rapidly deteriorating. That morning, I watched PJ work her magic with Hank, and he was soon in the car with us, heading to the vet. Until that day, Hank, who was an older dog, likely never experienced the loving warmth of a home and had certainly not spent much time around people. As I sat in the backseat of PJ's car and brushed my hand along Hank's bristly, weathered fur, he gently nuzzled his head on my lap, as if to say "thank you for saving me." After assessing his injuries, it became clear that he would not have made it through another winter. We all knew--including Hank--that the road ahead would be rough for this sweet fellow, but he was now safe. He would have a warm home and a loving family to look after him while he regained his health. His days on the streets, in the bitterness of winter, would now only be a distant memory. I will never forget the day that we rescued Hank, as it was the day that I fell in love with Gateway Pet Guardians. Hank's story is not uncommon. PJ and the Gateway Pet Guardians volunteers have rescued countless dogs and cats and given them a new "leash" on life. More importantly, they've given them life-saving care and helped to restore their dignity. I can't begin to describe the feeling I felt that day when Hank looked up at me with his tired eyes. It made me proud to be a part of Gateway Pet Guardians. The cold winter months are most definitely here, and I can't help but think of the animals that still await their rescue. As the year draws to a close and the holidays are upon us, I urge you to keep Gateway in mind. This time of year is often packed with holiday festivities. The thought of volunteering even a small amount of time seems impossible. This New Year, resolve to make a difference. Make a pledge to volunteer a couple of hours a month at an adoption event, or hold a pet food drive at work. If you have an animal lover on your holiday list, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Gateway on their behalf. Or, check our list of adoptable pets-a sweet dog snuggled at the foot of your bed goes a long way in warming the soul. Knowing that you helped save a dog (or cat) from the bitterness of winter will give you a feeling of warmth that will last much longer than that loaf of fruitcake!

| Macy (formerly known as Phoebe) was rescued from the streets as a puppy. She was so adorable and PJ knew she would find her forever home quickly! Here are a few words from Macy's new mom.
We adopted Macy about 4 weeks ago and she already rules the house and our 80 pound German Shepard mix, Ben! She has taken over his bed and steals all of his bones and toys. We have bought her her own, but she insists on only having what he has! She loves our one year old son and enjoys teasing her new cat brother, Jack. House training is progressing and I would say should be complete in a week or two. What a fun addition she has made to our family! We are very curious to see how she reacts to the Christmas tree in a few weeks...

Volunteers of the Month
Kendra and Blake Billhartz
|
The Volunteer of the Month section is created to give special thanks to a volunteer each month. Without dedicated volunteers, we could not save the number of animals that we do.
Kendra and Blake Billhartz are siblings and huge animal lovers. They began volunteering this past fall and prove to be two of the most reliable volunteers we have. They have assisted at numerous adoption events, fundraising events and are in the process of starting a dog/cat food drive at St. Louis University! Thank you, Kendra and Blake for your dedication to the animal community and Gateway Pet Guardians! We love the energy and fun you bring to our group! Below are some words from Kendra and Blake.
"My name is Kendra Billhartz and I will soon be a graduate of Southwestern Illinois College. I am a volunteer for the Gateway Pet Guardians and have only been involved for a few short months. I have always had a love for animals and was an avid dog walker for the Belleville Human Society. I love animals and enjoyed making connections with dogs that had either been picked up off of the street, abandoned by their owners and tied to the fence outside of the Humane Society overnight, or the pitbulls who weren't given a chance. I was able to be with some of them during their final moments. I recently started volunteering because my cousin, Jamie Case, the Executive Director gave me the opportunity to join such a great team of life savers. I have enjoyed each event and adoption event. Although, I have not gotten to make it to ESTL to rescue, I soon hope to join PJ."
"My name is Blake Billhartz and I am a sophomore at St. Louis University. I recently got involved in this outstanding organization about four months ago. For one of my classes, I was given the opportunity to participate in a service learning experience for extra credit. During that same week, my cousin Jamie Case, the Executive Director of Gateway Pet Guardians, was on SLU's Campus for the community service fair. I immediately knew that GPG was the perfect place for me to volunteer. Not only would it allow me to spend some time with my comical cousin, but it would also allow me to continue doing something that I loved, which was to take care of "unloved"
animals. I started caring for these animals when I was in high school by helping out at a local humane society with my sister, Kendra. When I finished a day of volunteering at the humane society, I always felt a sense of fulfillment and I wanted to continue this by helping with Gateway Pet Guardians."

Gateway Pet Guardians Goes Hollywood
|
November 18th was a night of shining stars for Gateway Pet Guardians. No, George Clooney wasn't in town- the stars of this show all walk on four legs. GPG held their first annual Soiree for Strays at Webster University. The evening started with a screening of the award winning documentary "Gateway Guardians," and was followed by a beautiful reception at Eden Seminary.
During the reception, which was emceed by Fox 2's Teresa Woodard, Gateway took time to reflect on the past year and honor some of their biggest supporters. Paul and Lisa Boyer, and Deborah Martin were special honorees for the night. They are long-time supporters of the group, and are all proud owners of Gateway Pet Guardian dogs. The Foster of the Year award was presented to Melissa Stiles, who also serves as the volunteer coordinator for the group. She has opened her home to many puppies and adults dogs during this past year, and works very hard to make sure we have enough people to help at all of our events. A big thank you to the Boyers, Deborah, and Melissa!
A Gateway Pet Guardian award banquet would not be complete without a special mention to PJ Hightower, who has saved countless numbers of dogs and cats over the last decade. We paid a special tribute to one of PJ's most beloved cases-Bomber. PJ had fed Bomber for years before rescuing him two years ago in the middle of winter. He was adopted and spent the last year and a half of his life in the lap of luxury. While we will miss Bomber, he was an inspiration to everyone who came in contact with him, and his legacy will live on through the continued efforts of Gateway Pet Guardians. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to a number of individuals for their generous sponsorship- Metro East Industries Inc, Custom Towels Inc, CEDC Civil Engineering Design Consultants,
Pets in the City, Julia Mittlestadt, MatchMeat, Major Brands, USA Mortgage, DNT Imaging, Hillside Animal Hospital, Aries, Inc. and Continental Title. We also want to thank Cheri Hutchings of Claire de Lune Productions for her wonderful job of planning the event, and also to all the volunteers who helped make the evening possible. Thanks to the work of so many great people, we raised over $11,000. Thank you all and we hope to see you next year! |

TRAIN!
Trainer's Corner Separation Anxiety
|
Separation anxiety can be a very difficult behavior to modify. From personal experience with my dog, Barkley, I know that it takes time and a lot of patience to correct this behavior but the good news is that it can be done! Like any other behavior, you have to first determine if this is what your dog is suffering from before you can take steps to modify it. Go to this website for some excellent suggestions that will help you diagnose the problem.

PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois just east of St. Louis, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates and rescues when a home is available.
A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side, or hopefully lack there of.
When we rescue an animal, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a pet should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the animals tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our rescues in foster homes as often as possible.
We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
