July's Featured Rescue
Croquet

CroquetWell we have had the DNA tested on this little bundle of joy and she is a bull dog, boston terrier mix. This darling puppy is READY to find her forever home!!!!!! She is an adorable puppy who loves running with her foster brother, playing with her favorite squeaky toys and eating treats. She is very athletic and loves the outdoors! She loves to hike and loves the water! She also loves to humorously chase her tail! She is crate trained and potty trained and curious about felines. She walks well on a leash and knows commands such as sit, stay, wait and down. At nighttime she looks forward to snuggling with you while you watch TV before bedtime. She loves to be held on your lap. She is up to date with routine shots and altered. She deserves a loving forever home. Please inquire with us for further information or to meet this beautiful girl in person!

Jenga's story
Jenga was rescued from the streets in November 2009.  She was rescued with a severely broken leg.  She had surgery and had post op rehab before she was ready to be adopted.  Jenga has now been adopted and is living in the lap of luxury (like every little beagle should).

Her new mom, Lisa comments about their new family addition.

"I contacted Gateway Pet Guardians a couple of months ago looking for the "perfect dog" for our family.  I told GPG that it didn't matter what color or breed it was, I was just looking for a small, housebroken dog that was gentle with children.  Jamie immediately said they had the perfect dog for us, Jenga.  The minute I saw her picture I felt a connection and knew that we could give her the kind of forever home she needed.

Jenga immediately fit right into our home.  She loves spending time with our two boys, ages 2 and 5, who give her all the love and attention she deserves.  When Jenga isn't being a typical hound dog, lying around in her bed napping, her favorite game is to run from one end of the house to the other playing until she wears herself out.  When outdoors Jenga loves to get in the middle of the kids' soccer game, track rabbit or dig for moles.  I also think she would make a good fisher dog because of her great ability to find and dig up worms.

Jenga captures the hearts of everyone she encounters.  Her loving eyes and sweet disposition is enough to melt anyone's heart.  Thank you Gateway Pet Guardians and Jamie Case for setting my family up with the "perfect dog.""

TRAIN!
Trainer's Corner

Jamie Kelly
Our new "Trainer's Corner" feature will spotlight local trainer and GPG foster mom, Jamie Kelly as she discusses behavior issues that many of us experience.

Excessive Barking:  A huge mistake most of us make when trying to hush our dogs is when we yell at them to be quiet.  In a dog's mind, we are joining in and barking right along with them when we yell, "Shuuut up!"  The fact is, dogs bark so it's unrealistic to think we can completely stop their barking but we can teach them what is appropriate barking and what isn't.  Instead of yelling, try redirecting him to do something else like a "sit" or a "watch me" while enticing him with his favorite treat.  You can add a cue to this also such as "enough!"  Go to this link where some good training tips are explained in detail:  http://www.lovemydogtraining.com/html/barking.html
If you are having any type of behavior problems with your dog and feel you need professional help to modify a behavior, please contact Lucky Dog Pet Services, LLC.  We offer certified positive reinforcement training and behavior modification as well as pet sitting and professional grooming.  jamiekelly@sbcglobal.net or call 314-623-9879

Also, with Fourth of July around the corner, our trainer, Jamie would like to recommend a product that works wonders on dogs that are afraid of loud fireworks and storms.  Check it out! http://www.thundershirt.com/

Need to Rescue!
Nigella
 Nigella
New Section!  The need to rescue feature of the newsletter will feature a dog that is awaiting rescue on the streets.  This is your chance to do something incredibly rewarding!

Nigella is the daughter of Nina (face of the upcoming documentary-left) and the sister of Nigel.  PJ has been feeding this pack for a few years now.  We do not want to rescue this pack until we have fosters for all three.  Nigel and Nina have fosters waiting.  They need to be rescued ASAP because of a venearal tumor that Nina has.

Nigella is going to make a wonderful addition to your pack.  She is very submissive and will need to be shown how to live in the lap of luxury.  She is one of our repeat puppy moms, having a litter of pups every 6 months.

Please consider taking this sweet girl into your home!  We will mentor you and assist you with the entire process of introducing you to your family and pack.  She is aching for someone to love her!

Vet bills are stacking up!
Parvovirus has hit the rescue once again!  It is a  particularly deadly disease among young puppies, about 80% fatal, causing gastrointestinal tract damage and dehydration as well as a cardiac syndrome in very young pups. It is spread by contact with an infected dog's feces. Symptoms include lethargy, severe diarrhea, fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and dehydration.
We have 7 puppies at our vet that are infected by it.  The cost for parvo treatment can range from $500 to $3000 per puppy and their is no guarantee that they will survive until the virus is gone.  The puppies must be quarantined and on a constant IV drip.
We will do everything we can to save these puppies.   This can be very expensive for the rescue and will limit future rescues until the bills are all paid.
