DON'T GET LOST
Marilyn and I were on a road trip where we had all the necessary tools to find our destinations and yet I won't admit we were lost,
but in some vicarious location. We had maps, GPS (turn right in 100 feet) and my sense of direction to guide and direct us. Despite my navigational skills, we found ourselves still not lost I might add, but off course. In this journey, I'd like to point out several key observations I made. First, we did not get lost on purpose, in fact we didn't even know we were getting lost. All of a sudden, we were just ...lost! Next, it didn't matter that our intention was to be at the hotel, the fact is the road we were on was taking us further away from our destination. We had to recalculate in a hurry or find ourselves further away than we already were. Finally, there were many distraction keeping us from staying on the right course and drew our attention away from our intended destination such as the beautiful scenery, the music, conversation, answering texts and the list goes on.
Isn't this how it plays out in a many areas of our lives from relationships to health, finances and even our spiritual life. We find ourselves lost, with no intention of getting lost, no knowledge that we were lost... all of a sudden we're just lost. Let me share with you how this happens.
Whatever has our attention will control our direction
which then determines our destination.
Deuteronomy 7:12 says "If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the LORD your God will keep His covenant of love with you. It also says in Hebrews 2:1, "We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away". Then the question is, what has our attention? Let's ask ourselves, what do we think about most, worry about, plan for, spend money and time on, because that's the road we'll find ourselves on. Take a moment and just think about that. For example, if your attention (life) is on work, it then controls your direction and your destination. Then too many times you end up with burnout, fatigue, lost time with family, stress or maybe just a lost sense of who you are. Remember it isn't our intentions, but its the road we're on that we will ultimately find ourselves. In life we face this with food, health, a wrong relationship, money matters, etc. and we have all seen what can happen when things of this world captivate too much of someone's attention.
The answer - give yourself away. Simply stated, LOVE GOD and LOVE PEOPLE. I know easy to say however hard to live. Because it takes a life of action and sacrifice to change what has your attention that changes your direction to where and who you want to be. The results are a life with the focus off ourselves and on what's really important...others. I'll leave you with this from Albert Einstein
"Only a life lived for others is worth living"
