Bird Song: No Idle Chatter
Sun, March 11, 2 p.m. Illustrated Presentation
Dr. Andrew Dolby, University of Mary Washington Biology Department Chair and Virginia Society of Ornithology President will introduce the anatomy, physiology, and ecology of bird song and will explain the modern tools that biologists are using to decipher their hidden messages. Bird song may sound like nature's pleasant background music to our ears, but for the birds, singing is serious business.

Pruning Workshop: Hands-On Workshop Sunday, March 18, 2 p.m.
Beate Jensen, Building and Grounds Preservation Supervisor, will demonstrate how to take care of small trees, flowering shrubs, and boxwood. A classroom presentation will cover proper pruning techniques and the tools of the trade. An outdoor demonstration will follow.

Woodland Hike
Sunday, March 25, 2 p.m.
Conducted by Virginia Master Naturalists, this informative hike covers a mile of trails in both woodlands and fields and touches on the historic ruins of Belmont's past. Please wear sturdy footwear and meet outside the Visitor Center.

Washington, D.C., Bus Trip Wednesday, June 13
This day trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., features a visit to the George Bellows exhibition as well as ample free time to explore.
Newport, Rhode Island, Bus Trip
October 5-8th
This four-day, three-night trip will include visits to several area mansions, such as The Breakers and Rough Point. With lodging near shopping and dining options, we will have a wonderful mix of planned events and individual free time to experience Newport at its best.

New Trail Markers Installed | |
Ten interpretive markers at key sites along Belmont's 1 � miles of public trails were recently installed. Funding for this project was provided by the George J. and Effie L. Seay Foundation.
The markers feature descriptions and photographs detailing important historic sites along the woodland trail.
Belmont's trails are open year round, without charge. Trail maps are available on the museum's website and in the Museum Shop. Markers at the trail entrances also illustrate the various routes available. Click through to read the press release.

Spring Break Art Camp | |
April 9 -April 13; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Ages 6 - 12
Send your child on an artistic adventure with Belmont's Spring Break Art Camp.
Children will explore a wide variety of projects, including a healthy dose of the great outdoors!
This program is limited to twelve campers.
Cost: $90 members; $110/non-members. Fee includes materials. Students bring snacks and lunch.

Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was one of the most successful painters of his time, sought out by the rich and famous. She was a beautiful, young art student, and his biggest fan.
They fell in love on an ocean liner and spent their lives sharing art.
More than a hundred years later, the story of Gari and Corinne Melchers lives on in their home, Belmont. Be a part of this story. Come and explore this unique 18th century estate, tour stunning art galleries and hike the 27 acres of garden and trails. Share it with someone you love!
A National Historic Landmark, Gari Melchers Home and Studio is one of just 30 of America's most significant artists' spaces included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios consortium.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Museum Shop, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is also the official home of the Stafford County Visitor Center, where visitors can find information about Stafford County attractions, restaurants, hotels and other amenities.
