As part of Belmont's "William H. Johnson:  An American Modern" exhibition programming, funded by the Smithsonian Community Grant Program, storyteller Bill Grimmette performed for 600 delighted students at Lafayette Upper Elementary School in Fredericksburg.

Gari Melchers self portrait
At Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, see the richly furnished country house and working studio of American Impressionist painter Gari Melchers (1860-1932) as they appeared in the 1920s. Explore the colorful formal gardens and wooded hiking trails of the artist's 27-acre retreat. Enjoy special exhibitions of the art of Melchers and his contemporaries.

November is the last month to visit this wonderfully emotive exhibition. 

Explore the evolution of an American modernist painter through more than 20 paintings and archival photographs.

Did you know that President Obama selected four of Johnson's works from the Smithsonian's collections - the most by any one artist - to decorate the White House?

The exhibition catalog is available in the Museum Shop for $26.95.

"William H. Johnson: An American Modern," an exhibition developed by Morgan State University and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Henry Luce Foundation, and the Morgan State University Foundation, Inc.

Free Jazz Concert
Robert Jospé & the Inner Rhythm Quartet

Robert Jospé 
Robert Jospé, renowned jazz drummer, percussionist, composer and educator leads the Inner Rhythm Quartet. The group presents a vibrant repertoire, fusing the buoyant grooves of salsa, samba, swing, funk, and African rhythms into their distinctive sound.  

Jospé will be joined by Jeff Decker on saxaphones, Bob Hallahan on piano, and Randall Pharr on bass.  This free concert/lecture program explains the history and structure of Jazz, Blues and Standard song forms and performs compositions that illustrate how West African rhythms have influenced American music.

Complimentary admission to the "William H. Johnson" exhibition will be provided from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 6.

Painting Loaned to New Museum

Race Country FairThe Race, Country Fair, painted by Gari Melchers circa 1920, is currently on view in, "Afield in America: 400 years of Animal and Sporting Art, 1585-1985," at the new National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg, Virginia.

 

The exhibition, which is on view until January 14, 2012, features over 100 works by prominent American animal and sporting artists and others, like Melchers, who incorporated the themes into their work.  The paintings and sculpture have been drawn from major collections throughout the United States.  

 

Staircase Named Top Ten

This wrought-iron staircase is one of Belmont's most beloved and photographed artifacts.
Belmont is pleased to announced that our wrought-iron staircase on the house's East Porch was selected as one of Virginia's Top Ten Endangered Artifacts.

 

The program was designed and implemented by the Virginia Association of Museums to create awareness of the importance of preserving artifacts in the care of museums, libraries, and archives throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

Thank you to everyone who voted for our staircase during the program's public voting phase.
