Hans and Margot Van Gelder from Heiloo, The Netherlands, stopped by in late April to see pictures Gari painted a few miles from their hometown.

At Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, see the richly furnished country house and working studio of American Impressionist painter Gari Melchers (1860-1932) as they appeared in the 1920s. Explore the colorful formal gardens and wooded hiking trails of the artist's 27-acre retreat. Enjoy special exhibitions of the art of Melchers and his contemporaries.

Beate JensenBuilding and Grounds Preservation Supervisor, will give a talk about the basic care, pruning, and propagation of roses.  A garden tour of the Melchers' roses will follow.

Sunday, May 29, 2 p.m.

 

Conducted by Virginia Master Naturalists, this informative walk covers a mile of trails in both woodlands and fields and touches on the historic ruins of Belmont's past.  Please wear sturdy footwear.  Meet outside the Visitor Center.

County Fair
The Race, Country Fair by Gari Melchers
The Belmont Stakes at Belmont
Saturday, June 11 4:30 p.m. 


Join the excitement at Gari Melchers Home and Studio for the running of the 143rd Belmont Stakes.  The race will be televised live in the Studio Pavilion with a casual BBQ buffet and entertainment.

Don't let this event come down to the wire.
Invitations will be mailed to Friends of Belmont the first week of May.  Grab your tickets by June 4! 

                           

Entry fee: Friends of Belmont /$40; non-members $50. For reservations and information contact Betsy Labar at 540/654-1848.

Spend a week at Belmont exploring classic summer camp art projects that will keep students outside having fun.  From paper making and tie-dye to sun prints and painted flower pots, each day will produce a treasure to take home.

All ages, students  accompanied by adult

 

A two-day art adventure for children of all ages and abilities. 

 

Children work side-by-side with their favorite adult to make homemade paper and sun prints featuring foliage from the Belmont landscape.

Students will be challenged to think expansively while they work on a mural project.  An additional take-home project will round out this four-day camp.

Plein Air Art at Belmont

Grades 3-9

 

Art teacher and local artist Cathy Herndon will lead a plein air (French expression for "out of doors") class where students will learn the observation technique of drawing using colored pencils and charcoal.

What Color Do You Feel Today?
is May's theme.

We will read Dr. Seuss' book My Many Colored Days, make a color collage using found materials, and explore how different paintings make us feel in the galleries.
