| | Studio on Torenduin by Gari Melchers |
Curator's Note:
I have Mr. Peter van den Berg of Egmond, Holland, who has written on George Hitchcock and the Egmond School of Painters, to thank for the errors he discovered in the December newsletter article "Studio on Torenduin Now on Display." It was George Hitchcock alone who built the house and studio on the dunes around 1886, and he shared the studio space with Melchers. The building did not succumb to a storm in 1906, but was demolished to make way for eventual development of the dunes. JDC |

| Exhibitions | | "The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century"
Through Feb. 27
| | "One Day Last Spring," by Lee Alban |
Visit the exhibition that everyone is talking about! Three galleries full of paintings that explore Realism in fresh and innovative ways. These modern-day artists from around the world use everything from colored pencils to egg tempera to create their hyper-realistic paintings. A majority of the paintings use tromp l'oeil, a French term meaning "trick or fool the eye," to depict an object so exactly as to make it appear real. Come see what using "only a brush and the naked eye" can accomplish. Read the brochure. "The American Impressionists in the Garden"Feb. 18 - May 15
The 40 or so assembled paintings explore the theme of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century gardens in American art and society.
Gari Melchers' "Woman Reading by the Table" (above), which is owned by the Greenville County Museum of Art, as well as works by Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, Robert Vonnoh, and Edmund Tarbell are all on display.
The fully illustrated exhibition catalog, The American Impressionists in the Garden, is available in our Museum Shop. |

Ninth grade through adult
| | "Yellow Pot Blue Flowers" by Gari Melchers |
This workshop is an exploration of light and its effect on a piece of artwork. Looking at Impressionist and Post-Impressionist work, we spend the day seeing color afresh.
Participants will create two still-life paintings, one with objects as they appear naturally and one with the same objects completely white. Different lighting is explored and discussed. Cost: $20 members; $25 non-members. To register, contact Education Coordinator Michelle Crow-Dolby at 540/654-1851. This workshop has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine arts and is supported by the Paul Mellon Endowment.
Preschool Palette is an early childhood program for children ages 3-5. The workshop introduces art and art museums to young children through developmentally appropriate activities, including a visit to Gari Melchers' studio and art gallery and a chance to explore ideas through a variety of materials and techniques.
Program themes and projects change monthly, so there is always something new to do! Cost: $8/child; $5, members.
Pre-register by contacting Education Coordinator Michelle Crow-Dolby at 540/654-1851. Groups (play group, preschool, day care) are encouraged to schedule individual class times.
