LED Lighting Ripoff By Green Living Tips
Not all LED lights are created equal
I've been using LED lights for a few years now and I think the essence of the technology is fantastic. LED lights are great in off grid applications as they sip so little power; even far less than CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) - and without the mercury concerns.
The technology has evolved to the point that they are becoming more commonplace in homes too. LED's have the potential to contribute greatly to electricity related carbon emissions.
But not all LED's are created equal and the current situation is putting makers of quality LED products in a difficult position.
Unfortunately, the rise in popularity and pressures of pricing competition has seen an increasing trend of what are referred to (but not marketed as) "disposable" LED lights. These inferior products threaten to give all LED lighting a bad name as the market is riddled with them.
I've bought a few LED products that have started out fine, but after a hundred or so hours of use, the lights dim, then after a while longer they flicker, and then ultimately go out.
These are not isolated incidents, nor am I just unlucky - this appears to be the nature of the design in many cases, another example of planned obsolescence.
So how do merchants and manufacturers justify the kazillion hour ratings they advertise for these products?
I've been communicating with Tim Gravert of Caberra Systems, Inc.; who have been in the solid state electronic and LED industry for 30 years. Tim is also very angry that many manufacturers are misleading the public in regard to "lifetime ratings" as this impacts on quality companies who provide ratings based on real-world conditions.
It's my understanding from the information Tim has given me and subsequent research that LED lifetime ratings are often based on the "L70" standard - a calculation based partly on operating the light in ambient temperatures of just 15 degrees Celsius or 59 degrees Fahrenheit. The "70" means the light should maintain 70 percent of its brightness over the period of time.
Another important point is that the ambient temperature under L70 is meant to be measured in the area immediately surrounding the LEDs, not the general air temperature. Bearing in mind that heat is one of the greatest enemies of LED lights and cheap LED lights tend to be built in such a way that does not allow for rapid heat dissipation either, you can see where this is heading.
While even cheap LED's run pretty cool in comparison to an incandescent lamp, which is part of what makes them so efficient, I know from my own experience that cheap LED lights get warmish, even when the general air temperature is quite chilly - and most people would have their homes heated to above the 15 degrees Celsius / 59 degrees Fahrenheit mark anyway.
So, when a manufacturer makes the claim the light will last 100,000 hours; the claim is often made with that 15 degrees Celsius or 59 degrees Fahrenheit figure under the L70 standard and if you run them at a temperature any higher, which most people will do, bang - it's a good excuse for a decline of warranty claim and will also ensure that the life of the LED is greatly decreased - and a replacement bought.
Alternatively, given how cheap some of these lights are, you won't even bother with a warranty claim and just chuck the light away. It's an issue that manufacturers are well aware of I'm told and in my opinion, it's a form of green washing.
In environmental terms, this goes beyond just these tiny LED bulbs. There's usually a good deal of plastic and metal housing and perhaps a stand that comes with LED lighting. Millions of these cheap lamps are being sold around the world and given you can't replace the LED's in many these devices, they are bound for landfill much sooner than the purchaser thought they would. Even if the LED's can be replaced, such as the bulbs that work with standard light fittings, it's still a lot of waste.
To date, the best bang for buck I've received from LED's wasn't one of these 28/56 or whatever LED arrangements, but a headlamp with just one Cree LED in it. Although a single LED arrangement, it's been far brighter than any of the multiple LED lights I've had - and maintained its brightness. It cost a bunch more too at the time, but it was money well spent and there will be less waste when it does finally give up the ghost. When I was comparing headlamps, I found the look of it rather weird compared to other models, but the oddness had a purpose that I didn't realize at the time - to allow for more effective heat dissipation.
I think generally speaking, the more you spend on an LED fitting, the better the life you'll get - but don't just take price as a guide. Watch out for the "L70" standard and quiz merchants on a light's ability to dissipate heat. Look for ratings that will be guaranteed under real-world temperature conditions.
By the way, Tim tells me L70 isn't just used with LED lights, but also CFL's at times; which explains why the quality of Compact Fluorescent Lamps and their claimed lifespan vs. actual can vary quite a bit.

WHAT IS CANCER AND HOW CAN IT BE REVERSED? wddty.co.uk
Cancer isn't a disease - it's the symptom of a process. Once you understand the process, it can be reversed. This simple apporach has been used by Dr Patrick Kingsley on more than 3,000 cancer patients who came to see him at his quiet practice in the heart of England - often as a last resort, when medicine had given up.
Astonishingly, Dr Kingsley didn't lose a single patient in all those years.
In a remarkable teleconference with WDDTY editor Lynne McTaggart, Dr Kingsley explains what cancer is, and the ways that he has treated it. He outlines his protocols, his dietary advice - everything he has learned over his many years of practise. As he says, "I don't cure anyone. I just make it possible for healing to happen."
This 90-minute teleconference call is on Sunday, December 12th - and it's essential for anyone who has cancer or for those who are caring for a cancer victim.
And Dr Kingsley's advice is for everyone who wants to live a healthy, cancer-free life.
To book your place, please follow this link: http://www.tieteleseminars.com/
Dr Patrick Kingsley and fighting Cancer Dr Kingsley, a Leicestershire nutritional pioneer, believes in measures that will both build the immune system and kill the cancer that has already developed.
Killing the cancer The mainstay of his treatment is a combination of high dose, intravenous vitamin C and intravenous oxygen therapy of hydrogen peroxide, with 25 mg of vitamin C. In America, Dr Charles Farr of Oklahoma has pioneered "trioxide" therapy, which adds EDTA chelation of one and a half grams to Dr Kingsley's schedule.
Oxygen therapy fires free radicals at the body, which first attacks the most rapidly reproducing cells of the body cancer, bone marrow, mucous membranes. (The chelation both sends out free radicals and removes toxic substances from the body). However, the vitamin C protects all but the cancer cells from oxidative free radical damage.
Diet Test for food allergies.
Avoid junk food, refined carbohydrates, tea, coffee, milk and dairy products, some grains, particularly wheat, and yeasts.
Consume soya products and fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly the cruciferous variety (broccoli, cauliflower), which have proven anti oxidant effects. Introduce diet slowly, to minimize stress.
Supplements At least 10 g of powdered vitamin C per day (magnesium ascorbate, to minimize gut tolerance), a good antioxidant mixture, and 7-10 g of the herb echinacea per day for some patients (which stimulates the immune system).
Detoxification Coffee enemas are useful, says Dr Kingsley, because they stimulate the liver and large intestine into excreting toxic elements from the body.
Evidence of success: Recently, at a local cancer self help group, populated by Dr Kingsley's patients, of 36 patients, 24, or two thirds, said that they were rid of the cancer or continually improving. Four patients had reached a plateau, two patients were deteriorating and six not improving. Dr Kingsley says that this percentage outcome is fairly typical.
Scientific evidence: In one Scottish study of terminally ill cancer patients, patients lived four times as long on vitamin C than those who didn't take it. Many lived on for years, while those who didn't take the vitamin died (Proc Natl Acad Scie, 1978; 75: 4538-42). Another study showed that women with advanced breast cancer taking at least 10 grams of vitamin C lived 16 times as long as those who didn't (J Ortho Med, 1990: 5: 143-4). Oxygen therapy has had less validation in scientific studies; most have been in animals and cell lines. One study showed its antitumour effects on cells in the laboratory (J Exp Med, 1981; 154: 1539-53). Dr Farr believes that it has an anti tumour effect that is "slow and subtle". In one study, responses were noted in colorectal cancer and lymphomas (see WDDTY vol 4 no 8).

Treat stomach viruses with probiotics
The foundation of good health lives in the digestive system, where countless billions of beneficial microflora protect against harmful pathogens, assist in proper digestion, and generally guard the body against foreign invaders that cause disease. And a new study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) points to probiotics as a viable and natural way to treat stomach viruses and diarrhea in children as well.
If natural gut bacteria are imbalanced or functioning improperly, the body becomes highly susceptible to disease. But when such bacteria are balanced, healthy, and flourishing, it is very difficult for harmful bacteria and viruses to take hold. Research continues to validate the notion that eating plenty of probiotic-containing foods and even supplementing with probiotics helps to promote good health without any negative side effects.
"It is currently hypothesized that these microbes (probiotics) generate small molecular metabolic byproducts that exert beneficial regulatory influence on host biological functions," explained study authors Dan W. Thomas, MD, and Frank R. Greer, MD, in their report. More simply stated, probiotics simply help the body to defend itself against disease and improve overall health.
Their report found that probiotics help to treat gastrointestinal viral infections like rotavirus, infectious diarrhea, atopic diseases like eczema, allergic rhinitis, and asthma, and inflammatory bowel syndrome. And although the authors were hesitant to recommend the long-term use of probiotics for such conditions, other research has shown that the ongoing use of probiotics is both safe and beneficial -- because after all, probiotics are a natural food.
Probiotics naturally occur in foods like breast milk, as well as in fermented vegetables, cultured beverages like kefir and kombucha, and yogurt. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), probiotics help to prevent diarrhea, urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, dermatitis (eczema), and even bladder cancer (http://www.naturalnews.com/029073_p...).

Candida Overgrowth may be affecting your health NaturalNews.com
Do you experience symptoms like chronic fatigue, digestive problems, or vaginal infections with no real explanation? You're not alone. Estimates now suggest that up to 25% of Americans may suffer from yeast related problems - both men and women.
Candida overgrowth - also known as yeast infection or simply 'Candida' - is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and causes symptoms such as chronic fatigue, skin rashes, recurring vaginal yeast infections, or digestive problems. Despite the fact that many conventional doctors still deny its existence, public awareness of Candida overgrowth has continued to grow.
Candida yeast infection usually occurs in individuals with an overgrowth of an intestinal organism called Candida albicans due to an unhealthy diet high in sugar, prolonged stress, or overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Once the Candida albicans overwhelms the healthy bacteria in your gut, it can negatively affect your health in numerous ways.
Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth
Candida overgrowth is a common health problem of today as up to 75% of all women will experience a yeast infection in their lifetime. However, yeast infection can be far more complex and present a wide variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms:
constant fatigue recurring vaginal infections rashes - skin, mouth, sexual organs flu-like symptoms headaches constipation or diarrhea, bloating foggy brain food allergies
There are many symptoms of Candida yeast infection, but they all start because of out-of-control growth of Candida cells in the intestines. There it may produce a number of toxic by-products that may infiltrate the bloodstream. The result is a fight, and your body is the prize.
Treatment of Candida Overgrowth
There are two different approaches for dealing with Candida overgrowth:
Conventional medicine generally focuses on reducing the symptoms of the disease of Candida overgrowth. Drugs like Nystatin, Diflucan, Sporanox, or Lamisil can be prescribed to reduce the amount of Candida albicans yeast in the body. While these drugs can help over the short term, many people will experience recurring yeast infections in the long run. Holistic approach is usually the only long-term solution for Candida overgrowth. The holistic approach tries to address the root cause of Candida infection to permanently prevent it from recurring and to improve your overall health. This is something - by the way - that conventional medicine with synthetic drugs misses entirely.
Chronic yeast infection is a modern day disease that has reached epidemic proportions. However, thousands of patients with Candida overgrowth have already been helped or cured with antifungal, probiotic and diet therapy. Educating yourself thoroughly about the symptoms and causes of this condition is your first step to better health.

Mother of Gardasil victim becomes health activist Two years ago, Rosemary Mathis was pretty much your average successful working mom. She had a good job and two children she loved and enjoyed. Like millions of other parents, she also had complete trust in her family doctor. Thus, she had no qualms about following his advice to have her daughter Lauren undergo the series of Gardasil vaccinations to protect against the human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer. It was advice that would soon turn Rosemary's world upside down.
"I always trusted my doctors. I always fully trusted all vaccines. I let him give it to her and should not have done that. But I did," Rosemary said.
After Lauren's first two doses of Gardasil in August, 2008 she experienced stomach pains, headaches, and nausea. Her doctor said she had a virus which was not related to the vaccine. Then Lauren received her third and final dose of Gardasil on August 18. Less than two weeks later she was completely bedridden and Rosemary began spending her days taking Lauren to doctors for round after round of tests and treatments.
"My 13 year old missed almost her entire eighth grade year of school!" Rosemary said. "Some of her symptoms were enlarged liver, gallbladder attacks, severe nausea, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, severe headaches, brain freezes, stomach ulcer, and sensitivity to light. She became severely depressed because she could not attend school or be with her friends like a normal child."
Initially, doctors could not figure out why such a young girl would have such symptoms. Ultimately, doctors settled on gall bladder problems and she was sent for surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Fortunately, the surgeon recognized that the symptoms were more than gall bladder dysfunction and did not operate.
Lauren was subsequently identified as a vaccine victim by Duke University. While Lauren was being treated for her problems, her mother Rosemary did not take the news sitting down. Instead, she began researching Gardasil and interacting with other victims' mothers. She and other mothers formed Truth About Gardasil (truthaboutgardasil.org) and later the non-profit SANE VAX, Inc. (www.sanevax.org) to help spread the word about Gardasil dangers. Today, Rosemary Mathis and SANE VAX are internationally known and respected, which Rosemary said is largely due to the tireless efforts of SANE VAX volunteers.
On March 12 of this year, Rosemary appeared before the FDA and presented 243 pages of data and reports about Gardasil, including the 61 deaths and over 17,000 adverse reactions reported thus far. The FDA promised to get back to the group within a month, but it thus far has done little more than give assurances that the materials have been forwarded to appropriate parties for review.
As Rosemary and the group have found, FDA action on dangerous drugs can be a slow, arduous and frustrating endeavor. It took the FDA years and a death count that reached over 50,000 before finally banning Vioxx. By comparison, after 52 deaths were attributed to unintended acceleration in a car from a leading manufacturer, a $2 billion recall ensued.
Gardasil, a Merck vaccine targeting HPV, was given FDA fast-track approval in 2006 - a decision that surprised many since cervical cancer accounts for less than 1 percent of all cancer deaths. Merck, who also made Vioxx, claims Gardasil will save lives, though no long-term studies are available yet. The question Rosemary and others want answered is: What about all the lives it is costing or destroying?
"I am afraid that Gardasil is going to be another Vioxx, and that five years from now they are going to pull it and it is going to be too late for all these girls," she said.

Obtain your natural weight with Vitamin D
Excess body weight and abdominal obesity represent an astounding threat to the health of millions of men, women and children worldwide. Over the past century obesity has been relatively rare, affecting less than 1% of the population at the turn of the 20th century. Today the number of obese individuals is 34% and continues to grow steadily. We have become grossly deficient in vitamin D as we shun sun exposure and rely on inept supplemental recommendations. Researchers have discovered that this super nutrient is required to metabolize stored fat and that more than 60% of people tested are severely deficient. You can help your body burn abdominal fat and lose weight naturally by regulating your vitamin D intake.
Study Shows Vitamin D Becomes Locked in Fat Cells The results of a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reveal that 59% of young women tested had too little circulating vitamin D and nearly one-quarter were grossly deficient in the active form of the vitamin. Vitamin D insufficiency has been shown to be a factor in the accumulation of excess body fat as the fat-soluble vitamin becomes locked away in adipocytes (fat cells). In the absence of sufficient vitamin D the body increases the number and size of newly formed fat cells that promote and accelerate abdominal obesity.
Low Vitamin D Linked to Fat Accumulation and Cancer Vitamin D is actually a prohormone that becomes activated in the kidneys, and it becomes a potent hormone that controls the growth of cells. In the absence of sufficient circulating levels of the active form, both adipocytes and cancer cells are allowed to multiply relatively unchecked. Sufficient levels of vitamin D signal fat cells to shrink. This makes weight loss much easier when calories are restricted and also keeps cancer cell growth in check.
Checking Vitamin D Levels to Assist Weight Loss The only way to know if you are vitamin D deficient is with a simple blood test. Be sure to have the prohormone blood level checked with a 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) test. Most experts agree that the proper level to ensure complete cell saturation is between 50 and 70 ng/ml.
The referenced study found that every 1 ng/ml increase in blood level translated to an additional half-pound of lost body weight. This same level has also been shown to lower the risk from many cancer lines by up to 78%. Most people will need to supplement with 2,000 to 10,000 IU daily to reach the proper saturation point. People with dark skin, higher body weight and advancing age will require higher doses of vitamin D.
Research has shown that vitamin D ranks among the most essential nutrients to promote human health. Our ancestors evolved in a sun drenched environment with nearly full body exposure for most of the day. We made large amounts of the vitamin in our skin and reaped amazing health benefits. Today we use sun screen and avoid the sun. The small amounts of vitamin D we may have become locked away in fat cells and perpetuate obesity. Ensure you have enough of this critical nutrient circulating in your blood to promote vibrant health and natural weight loss.

Psychiatric researcher pleads guilty to research fraud
A psychiatrist on the payroll of GlaxoSmithKline has been sentenced to 13 months in prison after pleading guilty to committing research fraud in trials of the company's antidepressant Paxil on children.
Maria Carmen Palazzo is already serving a sentence of 87 months for defrauding Medicare and Medicaid.
Palazzo was accused by the FDA of enrolling children in a clinical trial even though she knew they did not actually suffer from major depressive or obsessive compulsive disorder, the conditions being studied. Palazzo then falsified records and psychiatric diagnoses.
GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of Paxil, paid Palazzo $5,000 for every child she enrolled in the study.
The case's significance goes beyond simple research fraud, as Glaxo is now defending itself against charges that for 15 years it deliberately concealed evidence that Paxil increases the risk of suicide in children.
Glaxo is also defending itself against accusations that it manipulated data to conceal the risks of its diabetes blockbuster Avandia, and that it failed to warn parents that Paxil may cause birth defects if taken by pregnant women. The company has already agreed to pay more than $1 billion to settle roughly 700 birth defect lawsuits; another 100 or so suits are pending.
Although the FDA eventually required Paxil to carry a warning about the risk of birth defects and an even more prominent "black box" warning about suicide risk, many critics allege that the agency acted too slowly.
"There [had] been hints for many years that antidepressants, such as Paxil, when given to children, can cause serious side effects, including suicide, but the FDA delayed taking any action to prevent these drugs from being prescribed for children," writes Brent Hoadley in Too Profitable to Cure.
Palazzo will not actually serve any additional prison time for potentially placing children's safety at risk; her new term will be served concurrently with her first.

Eat a variety of colors for amazing health
Natural foods come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Everything on Earth has its own unique function and characteristics. Eating fruits and vegetables of a variety of different colors can give you the best all-round health benefits; each contains a distinctive blend of super nutrients that are fantastic for our well-being.
Red: Fruits and vegetables with the color red contain a super anti-oxidant in the carotenoid pigment lycopene. Lycopene is found in tomatoes, red & pink grapefruit, guava, watermelon, papaya, red bell pepper, and gogi berries. A fruit grown in Southern Asia called "gac" is considered the most lycopene rich food with over 70 times the amount of lycopene as tomato products per volume.
Lycopene is absorbed most effectively when it is combined with a fat source. Gac contains saturated and unsaturated fatty acids making it naturally bioavailable. Tomato sauces or tomatoes with extra virgin olive oil are another bioavailable source. Lycopene is noted for its powerful ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit cancer cell formation and arterial inflammation.
Orange: Orange containing fruits and vegetables are rich in the potent anti-oxidant beta-carotene. Beta carotene is found in sweet potatoes, yams, mangos, carrots, & apricots. The Vietnamese superfood "gac" has the most beta-carotene with over 10x the amount as carrots.
Beta carotene helps prevent night blindness and other eye problems while working to help improve eye function. It also acts to enhance skin health and immune system stability. Beta carotene has powerful anti-oxidant properties which help clean the body of free radicals that damage tissue and cause cancer.
Greens: The color of life is derived by chlorophyll which is one of the most powerful life-giving substances on the planet. The chlorophyll content of a food is a major indicator of the health attributes of any given plant based food. Chlorophyll rich foods have a very deep green and are extraordinarily useful in building new blood cells and purifying the body from cancer and radiation.
Additionally, green foods contain the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin that are being studied for their ability to protect your eyes by keeping your retina strong. They are also rich in folate, magnesium, copper, B6, & potassium. Many green vegetables like kale and collard greens contain powerful glucosinolates and methyl cysteine sulfoxides. These super-nutrients help to activate detoxifying enzymes in the liver that play an important role in neutralizing carcinogenic substances.
Blue/Purple: These darker pigments add beautiful shades that enrich your plate. They are also rich in flavonoids, phytochemicals, and anti-oxidants. The phytochemical pigment responsible for the dark color is called anthocyanins. Foods that are rich in anthocyanins include blueberries, plums, red cabbage, eggplant, blackberries, raspberries, & cranberries.
These super nutrients have an especially powerful ability to minimize cancer-induced DNA damage, stall the growth of pre-malignant cells, accelerate cancer cell death, and reduce inflammatory mediators that initiate cancer cell growth. Berries are one of the richest sources of anthocyanins and many experts believe that our ancestors ate far more anthocyanins than we do. In comparison, many researchers believe we are deficient in anthocyanins.
White: The onion family which includes leeks, scallions, onions, & garlic all contain the sulfur containing compound called allicin. This is a powerful anti-microbial that destroys bacteria, viruses, & fungi. Allicin is also a powerful anti-inflammatory that destroys cancer, lowers cholesterol, and reduces inflammatory damage to the heart and vasculature.
Cauliflower contains the phytochemicals Indole-3-Carbonyl and Sulforaphanes which are some of nature's most powerful cancer fighters.

Biofuels worse than fossil fuels, says expert
Biofuels have become all the rage among many environmental and sustainably-minded advocacy groups as a way to end dependence on foreign oil, limit greenhouse gas emissions, and create a "greener" tomorrow. But Andreas Spath, PhD, an expert in the field of geochemistry, says that biofuels are actually worse for the environment than conventional fossil fuels are.
It is widely believed that fossil fuel reserves will eventually be depleted, and that a viable, renewable alternative is urgently needed in order to avoid the worldwide collapse of a transportation and commerce infrastructure that depends on oil to function. And since biofuels are renewable, largely plant-based and work right now in existing vehicles, proponents say they are an excellent alternative.
But in reality, biofuel production requires massive amounts of land to produce additional fuel crops, and the entire growing, harvesting and refining process ends up ruining the environment and causing more greenhouse gas production than if the world simply continued on with fossil fuels. And biofuel production has also increased food prices across the board.
Corn ethanol, for instance, has shifted much of the U.S. corn production away from food crops and towards fuel crops. The result has been increased food prices, as the monetary incentive to grow biofuel corn is higher than it is to grow food corn. The same is true for sugar, soy, and other crops used around the world for biofuels.
A 2007 study comparing fossil fuels to biofuels found that, because of the chemical fertilizers used, biofuel production end up releasing twice as much greenhouse gas as fossil fuels do. The study actually found that continuing with conventional diesel production is better for the environment.
Another study conducted by the Institute for European Environmental Policy found that in order for the European Union (EU) to meet its biofuel goals, it will have to convert roughly 7 million hectares (more than 17 million acres) of land into biofuel cropland, which will destroy many natural ecosystems in the process.
