Drinking soda harms your sperm
(NaturalNews) Men who drink a liter of cola or
more every day have lower sperm counts than men who do not drink cola,
according to a new study conducted by researchers from Copenhagen
University Hospital in Denmark and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The effect did not appear to come from caffeine.
Researchers
have previously speculated that high consumption of caffeine may
produce lower sperm counts. Most studies into the connection have been
conducted in specific groups, such as infertile men, rather than the
general population, however, and no scientific consensus has emerged.
In the current study, researchers took sperm
samples from 2,554 men aged approximately 18. All the men were
undergoing physical exams to determine their fitness for military duty
between the years of 2001 and 2005. They also collected beverage intake
data on all participants.
The researchers found that men who never drank cola had an average sperm count
of 50 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Men who drank a liter or
more a day, in contrast, had only 35 million sperm per milliliter.
While this difference is not drastic enough to qualify as a problem by
World Health Organization standards, lower sperm counts have been well
established to correlate with lower fertility.
A much smaller effect on sperm levels was seen in men who drank large amounts of tea or coffee, ruling out caffeine as a likely cause. The researchers are unsure whether the lower sperm counts were caused by the cola itself, or by other unhealthy lifestyle habits associated with soda consumption.
"It's
important to note that the men who drank a lot of cola were also
different in many other ways," researcher Tina Kold Jensen said.
Men who drank large amounts of cola also tended to eat more fast food and less fruits and vegetables.
"I
imagine it's the lifestyle," said Fabio Pasqualotto, of the University
of Caxias do Sul in Brazil, who was not involved in the study.

Diet Soda Found to Cause Premature Birth, Study Says
(NaturalNews) A new research study, which included nearly 60,000
pregnant women in Denmark, found that those who drink artificially
sweetened beverages (carbonated or not) were more likely to have a
premature birth. The study was published in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition.1
The researchers found that one
serving per day of artificially sweetened, carbonated drinks were 38%
more likely to give birth before 37 weeks of gestation (1.38 AOR).
Those who consumed four servings of these drinks were 78% more likely
to have a premature delivery (1.78 AOR).
Dr. Shelly McGuire, a
spokesman for the American Society of Nutrition, was quoted as saying
"Certainly, until more experimental work is done, this study suggests
that pregnant women should steer clear of artificially sweetened drinks."2
Maybe the words "pregnant women" could be replaced with "everyone" in that statement?
According to a whole host of experts, it should be so. Soft drinks in general, in fact, should be avoided according to health practitioners and authors Michael Murray, Joseph Pizzorno, James Duke, Marion Nestle; to name a few.3
The abstract for this latest study by Dr. Thornallur Haldorsson, principal author, says that soft drinks in general are suspected of many adverse health effects:
"Sugar-sweetened
soft drinks have been linked to a number of adverse health outcomes
such as high weight gain. Therefore, artificially sweetened soft drinks
are often promoted as an alternative. However, the safety of artificial sweeteners has been disputed, and consequences of high intakes of artificial sweeteners for pregnant women have been minimally addressed."
Results
in the study were cross-referenced with women who consumed
sugar-sweetened soft drinks. It was found that the possible causative
was clearly the artificial sweeteners, rather than the soda or other ingredients. Both carbonated and non-carbonated drinks were included as well with the same result.
The actual physical change that causes the rise in premature birth
rates is not known, according to the study's authors. Artificial
sweeteners have been connected to a host of adverse health effects, so
it's likely that doctors could just take their pick here.4
The study did point out that most of the premature births were due to
medical induction rather than spontaneous delivery and removing data
from women diagnosed with preeclampsia also had little effect on the
odds for premature delivery and sweetener intake. With all of the other
things eliminated as suspects by the authors, it's clear that the
artificial sweeteners are changing a fundamental aspect of pregnancy
that is usually not measured.
This could include hormone
production, muscular or cellular function, or another chemical
interaction. Aspartame, for instance, breaks down into three major
chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. Methanol oxidizes into formaldehyde and then formic acid, both of which are toxic. These can accumulate in the body and have been linked to premature birth in primate studies.
So, from kidney function loss to cancer to premature birth, these sweeteners sure do have a lot going for them.

Light treatment clears psoriasis as it boosts vitamin D levels
(NaturalNews) According to the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) about 7.5 million Americans suffer from the
chronic, autoimmune skin disease called psoriasis that causes
irritated, flaky and thick patches of red skin; some forms of psoriasis
are also associated with joint pain. Most medical treatment for the
often painful and quality-of-life robbing disease center around
controlling symptoms with medications like cortisone. But now research
just published in the August issue of the Archives of Dermatology indicates there's a non-drug way to clear and maybe cure the disease naturally -- exposure to vitamin D boosting UV-B light.
Comprising
the "tanning rays" from the sun that are blocked by sunscreen and long
feared for supposedly causing wrinkles and "age spots", UV-B light, it
turns out, actually promotes health
by increasing levels of vitamin D. Now a team of scientists from St.
Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, have found that treatment
with narrow-band UV-B rays greatly increases serum levels of vitamin D
in the wintertime. And they've shown how adequate exposure to UV-B light therapy can clear psoriasis. In
fact, the new finding is powerful evidence that a lack of the
"sunshine" vitamin is involved in the development and worsening of this
skin condition.
The researchers studied 30 consecutive patients with psoriasis who were treated with narrow-band UV-B light three times per week between October 2008 and February 2009. The research
subjects' psoriasis cleared and their serum vitamin D levels (which
were measured before the study, after four weeks of treatment and after
the treatment was finished) were compared with those of 30 control patients who also had psoriasis but did not have any UV-B therapy. The researchers also assessed the severity of the patients' psoriasis symptoms and their skin disease-related quality of life before and after treatment. The
results showed that levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is
considered the most accurate measurement of vitamin D levels in the
body, had increased significantly among individuals receiving UV-B
therapy -- rising from about 23 nanograms per milliliter to 59
nanograms per milliliter at the end of treatment. However, there was no
change in the control group.
"At the end of the study, all
patients in the treatment group were vitamin D sufficient, but 75
percent of the control group had vitamin D insufficiency," the authors
wrote in their paper. What's more, the control group's skin condition
didn't improve at all. And in the group treated with UV-B light
exposure, their psoriasis severity scores decreased dramatically --
from 7.1 at the beginning of the study to only 0.5 after light therapy.

Big Business Fights Against the Health of Children
(NaturalNews) The Children's Food and Advertising Beverage Initiative,
initiated by the Better Business Bureau in 2007 and meant to curb what
is advertised to easily-influenced children on television, has been
delayed in Congress. The delay is being caused by an overdue report
that is meant to define standards for what can be advertised to
children in terms of a food's nutritional value, including calorie,
fat, and sugar content.
The inherent problem of the initiative
is that corporations, for now, voluntarily set their own standards for
what is and is not acceptable to advertise to children. Many of the
companies who voluntarily participate have agreed that half their
advertising will be devoted to healthier foods, but the companies
decide the acceptable limits for calorie, fat, and sugar content. That
means that candy, sugary cereals and sodas, and fatty frozen dinners
and fast-food meals can qualify as "healthy."
This initiative is
aimed at fighting childhood obesity, and while the initiative appears
to be a good start, it's not enough. Congress ordered several agencies
last year to propose set standards; in December, the agencies'
preliminary report was released and big business booed it. Now that the
final report has been delayed, experts believe industry is the cause.
Parents
and experts have long cautioned that advertising directed at children
influences children's future buying and eating habits. The short-term
effects of the initiative appear to be that children today are seeing
fewer ads for sweets and sugary beverages than they were a few years
ago; however, fast-food advertising seems to have picked up that slack,
according to a report conducted by the Institute of Medicine, soon to
be published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Many people would argue that this shift is not necessarily a positive change.
Furthermore,
while future buying habits are affected by advertising, day-to-day
habits are as well. Advertising does affect children profoundly:
children under 12 who view ads aimed specifically at them are far more
likely to request and eat foods that are targeted at them, that is,
food that is high in fat and sugar with little nutritional value.
It's
time for Congress to stop taking its cues from big business. Instead,
the federal government needs to worry about the health and well-being
of future voters rather than the pocketbooks of the companies trying to
poison them.

Body-Mind Meditation Leads to Rapid, Positive Brain Changes
(NaturalNews) The importance of meditation has long been known to
mankind, but scientists have now discovered the positive brain changes
that occur after a session of meditation even if it is a brief one.
Chinese
and US researchers at the University of Oregon studied the effects of a
meditation technique known as Integrated Body Mind Training (IBMT) on
45 students who were randomly selected. One group of students practiced
IBMT for half an hour every weekday for a month and the other group did
a relaxation technique.
The scientists found that even a brief session of meditation strengthened the connections of the brain that regulate our emotional response. They also found that the group of students who were practicing IBMT had brain
connections that started to strengthen in only 6 hours, which was not
visible in the other group. In 11 hours the differences were all the
more apparent.
The changes
were noted mostly on the part of the brain known as anterior cingulate
and the fibres connecting it. The inactivity of this part has been
associated with dementia, ADHD, schizophrenia and depression and
therefore scientists believe that the new study can help those who are
fighting with these conditions apart from de-stressing.
The researchers said, "We believe this new finding is of interest to the fields of education, health and neuroscience."
Integrated
Body Mind Training is based on an ancient Chinese medicine and was
adopted in the 1990s. It involves the combination of breathing
practice, mental energy and body
relaxation to de-stress all parts of the body and make the mind more
functional and calm. The rapid results achieved by this practice,
according to the scientists, may be due to the lack of emphasis on
deliberately emptying your mind and integrating all body activities
instead.
The same team of scientists had previously conducted a
similar test where five 20-minute sessions of IBMT had helped cut
stress and improve well being.
The apparent positive changes on
the brain in such a short duration, without the use of anything but
your own body and mind, are clearly a solution for many who need to
de-stress, relax and get smarter all at the same time.

Australia bans flu vaccines in children after vomiting, fevers, seizures
(NaturalNews) Although it's still summer in
North America, it is of course winter in Australia, and the flu season
is well under way there. As usual, Australian health authorities have
been urging parents there to vaccinate their children against the flu,
propagating the mythology that flu vaccines are both safe and
effective. But this time around, many Australian parents found out the
hard way that they were being lied to.
It didn't take long to realize the truth after their children start going into convulsions
following the flu vaccine injections. Other children began vomiting or
exhibiting dangerously high levels of fever. One child has gone into a
coma and may never recover.

"Perth
mother of two Bea Flint said her 11-month-old boy Avery had a seizure
after receiving the first dose of the two-dose flu vaccination on
Saturday. Mrs Flint said that after the 9am vaccination she noticed
Avery had a minor temperature about 2pm. At 7.45pm, Avery started
whimpering and moaning. When Mrs Flint got to his cot the baby had
vomited and was lying on his side having a seizure. 'He couldn't cry -
his head was hanging down in the car seat and he couldn't move. I was
petrified - it was one of the worst experiences of my life."
The story goes on to say, "The
doctor who treated Avery told Mrs Flint her baby was the fifth child
with similar symptoms admitted to the hospital that day."
In
other words, this was no rare event. Vaccinated children suffering
severe convulsions were piling up in hospital emergency rooms across
the country.
The real kicker, though, is that children started having convulsions two weeks ago
but Australian health authorities ignored them, insisting that the
vaccine was safe and causing it to be injected in yet more babies. Two
weeks later, with dozens more children experiencing convulsions (and
who knows how many thousands actually being harmed in less obvious
ways), Commonwealth chief health officer Professor Jim Bishop finally
announced the vaccination ban.
Remember: Health authorities in
Australia, UK, the United States and everywhere else have relentlessly
insisted that flu vaccines are perfectly safe and can't possibly harm
anyone. In the U.S., the FDA has given its approval to the very same flu vaccine that's harming children in Australia,
and the CDC has insisted that all children in the USA -- regardless of
age -- should now be injected with this very same flu vaccine.
So
now we've got a vaccine that Australia has banned but the USA somehow
says is safe enough to inject into a six-month-old infant. How many
convulsing babies will it take in the U.S. before American parents
realize the truth about flu vaccines?
Chemically induced convulsions As you're reading this, you may find yourself wonder, "Well, what could cause such convulsions in children?"
The answer is more terrifying than you might think, because it's not
"weakened flu viruses" that vaccine manufacturer claim they put into
the vaccines. A weakened flu virus doesn't send children into
convulsions. Only a chemical can do that.
The chemical
in question is one that's routinely added to most vaccines as a way to
aggravate the immune system to respond to the presence of the weakened
virus. It's called an "adjuvant" and consists of a highly inflammatory
chemical that we now know may damage brain tissues and the nervous
system. It is this adjuvant that most likely caused the convulsions in
children.
Even in children who don't experience convulsions,
there is speculation that this adjuvant may lead to future Alzheimer's
disease or other neurological disorders. Vaccine manufacturers always
attempt to downplay their use of adjuvant chemicals, and few media
outlets focus on this important point, but it is the adjuvant that is
most likely responsible for sending these Australian children into
hospitals with convulsions.
Health authorities defend dangerous vaccine One
thing I've noticed about vaccine pushers is that they behave like
irrational zealots. No matter how much evidence surfaces about the
dangers of vaccines, they continue to mindlessly push them while
ignoring the evidence.
A pediatric professor in Australia, Dr
Peter Richmond, admitted that researchers were trying to figure out if
the entire vaccine was dangerous, or if there was just a bad batch. But
even before getting the answer to this question, he goes on to say that

In
other words, he's so convinced the vaccine is safe -- even after dozens
of children were obviously harmed by it -- that he's still pushing the
same dangerous vaccine onto everybody else!
This is precisely
the kind of attitude reflected across the vaccine industry. Reports of
children being harmed, or paralyzed, or hospitalized by vaccines are
always written off as "coincidence." The mounting evidence is simply
thrown out the window because it conflicts with the pro-vaccine agenda.
Can
you imagine the outrage if an herbal product sent fifty kids to the
hospital suffering from convulsions? Health authorities across the
world would be quick to condemn the product, and they'd confiscate it
right off the shelves while shutting down the operations of its
manufacturer. But somehow when a vaccine does the same thing, these
same health authorities urge people to keep on injecting their children with it!
It
makes no sense. But then again, the vaccine industry was never based on
rational thinking in the first place. If health authorities were truly
rational, they'd be handing out vitamin D supplements to children instead of injecting them with vaccines, because vitamin D has been scientifically proven to provide better protection against the flu than vaccines. (http://www.naturalnews.com/029333_v...)
Of
course, to ask health authorities to make rational decisions is sort of
like asking politicians to start telling the truth. In the complicated
world of profits and politics, rational, honest thinking just doesn't
get any traction. It's far more profitable to keep lying to the world
and raking in billions of dollars each year off dangerous vaccines,
even as they continue to harm innocent children.
I often
wonder... How many dead children will it take before parents wake up
and realize that flu vaccines are dangerous? The answer may surprise
you: Even a million dead children won't change the minds of most
parents because they just do whatever they're told by health
authorities, even if it makes no rational sense.
Most parents are so brainwashed by the medical system that they would gladly line up to have their babies injected with chemotherapy if they were told it was somehow necessary.
At
some point, the parents whose babies are being harmed or potentially
even killed by these vaccines can only blame themselves. They were the
ones who brought their babies to be injected with a chemical adjuvant
and viral fragments, and they should know better than to trust the
government when it comes to health advice. The government, after all,
still says that pharmaceutical chemicals are good for you while
vitamins, herbs and natural remedies are dangerous. And it's the
government that approved the very vaccines that are right now sending
these children to the hospital.
Any parent that trusts the
government with the health of their child is setting themselves up for
catastrophe. And that catastrophe could very well cost them the life of
their child.

Cinnamon extract reduces risk of diabetes and heart disease
(NaturalNews) A recent study headed by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has identified a link between
cinnamon intake and reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease.
According to the research, water-soluble cinnamon extract, which is
high in antioxidants, helps to decrease glucose levels in the blood as
well as reduce oxidative stress in the body.
Richard Anderson, a
chemist with the USDA and study lead, and his colleagues evaluated 22
participants who were obese and considered to be "pre-diabetic" based
on their cells' interaction with insulin.
The team divided the participants into two groups, one of which
received a placebo, and another that received 250 milligrams (mg) of
dried, water-soluble cinnamon extract twice a day for 12 weeks. Follow-up tests revealed up to a 23 percent increase in antioxidant levels among those taking the cinnamon.
Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose
levels are higher than normal, and the cells that would normally accept
insulin from the pancreas in order to lower these levels begin to
reject it. If not addressed quickly, pre-diabetes can quickly develop
into full diabetes.
Based on the study, cinnamon is a viable, natural treatment for maintaining healthy blood glucose
levels and preventing the onset of diabetes. Other studies have also
shown that cinnamon plays a vital role in maintaining healthy
circulation and energy levels in the body.
"Recent studies show
that cinnamon stimulates circulation and boosts the ability of insulin
to metabolize glucose and carry it into cells for energy production,"
explain Stephen Sinatra, M.D., and James C. Roberts, M.D., in their

Be Aware of the Very Real Dangers of Quinolone Antibiotics: Tendon Rupture
(NaturalNews) Every antibiotic on the market kills bacterial pathogens
using a different mechanism of action. Some act on specific properties
of bacterial cell walls or by blocking certain enzymes that keep them
from reproducing. Some antibiotics, like the Quinolone antibiotic
family, kill bacteria by damaging the DNA and the energy centers of the
pathogens so they can't reproduce effectively. While this mechanism
works amazingly well to kill pathogens, it's not specific to bacteria.
One of the casualties of this war on infection is that these Quinolone antibiotics
tend to cause damage to slow-growing tendon cells- which has lead to
lifelong damage and even complete rupture of these essential structures
we depend upon for our mobility.
Quinolone and Fluoroquinolone
antibiotics have been around for decades. They have been hailed as safe
and effective treatments for some of the hardest to kill 'superbugs'
out there and are even used extensively in the intravenous form for
some of the sickest hospitalized patients. While these antibiotics may
be life-saving in some situations and they DO kill bacteria extremely effectively, they do this by damaging the energy production centers and DNA
of the bacterial cells. Unfortunately, they also damage the DNA and
energy centers in the cells of the person taking them. This damage
occurs to some extent in every person who uses them, but the vast
majority of people simply don't notice the small amount of damage that
occurs and are able to repair and replace these damaged cells without problem.
For
a variety of different reasons, there are some people who DO notice
this damage, sometimes as soon as a few hours after taking the first
pill -with effects that can be devastating and permanent. Curiously,
the cells of tendons and other connective tissue seem to be
particularly at risk
due to the fact that they reproduce slowly and have a poor blood
supply. The damage that occurs can be as simple as a small amount of
tendon pain that

Achilles tendon being the most often affected. Researchers are unsure
exactly what makes some people more vulnerable than others, but the
fact is that they DO know that it happens. In fact, it's so well known
that the FDA has placed a 'Black Box Warning', the strongest warning that they use, right on the packaging in order to alert doctors and consumers to this very real possibility.
While
the agencies that are supposed to protect us are AWARE of this problem,
they consider the risk too small to justify removing these drugs
from the market. What is a small risk for the FDA, however, may not be
for the public, who is unaware of the fact that a course of antibiotics
for a sinus or skin infection could turn into a lifetime of disability
from a severely damaged or ruptured Achilles tendon. Even though this
risk is considered 'minimal', the millions of prescriptions written for
these drugs every year have already been translated into tens of
thousands of people who are now experiencing a lifetime of pain or
disability from having taken a course of antibiotics that doctors,
researchers and the FDA all consider safe.
