Government Response to the Science and Technology Committee Report 'Evidence Check 2: Homeopathy'

The Government has strongly rejected demands by MPs for the funding of homeopathy on the NHS to be withdrawn, claiming it would fly in the face of patient choice and local decision-making.

In its response to a report from the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, which issued a damning verdict on the practice and called for GPs to be barred from referring patients under the NHS, the Department of Heath said it would not be stepping in - despite MPs' concerns over the lack of evidence and regulation of homeopathic treatments.

MPs had called not only for doctors to be barred from referring patients to homeopathic hospitals or homeopaths, but for the MHRA to intervene and to apply the same standards of regulation as for medicines, which they said would remove any medical claim supporters of homeopathy had.

But in its response today the DH said: 'It is not appropriate for the Department of Health to remove the right of PCTs to make these decisions on a case-by-case basis.'

'Capital investment decisions in the NHS are planned and decided at local level. The commissioning plans of local PCTs set out the type of services that need to be provided and therefore drive decisions about the nature of new facilities needed, or the need to maintain, update or replace existing facilities.'

The committee had also called for an investigation into the cost of homeopathy to the NHS and for new research into the evidence-base for homeopathy, but this too was rejected.

MPs had wanted regulators to 'remove any medical claim and any implied endorsement of efficacy by the MHRA' by ensuring the same evidence of efficacy used to assess conventional medicines was used, but the Government said this would potentially deal a fatal blow to the homeopathy market and limit consumer choice.

'Homeopathy has a long tradition in Europe and is a recognised and widely used system of medicine across the EU,' it said.

'The Government takes the view that consumers who choose to use homeopathic medicines should be fully informed about their purpose and assured that standards of quality and safety are maintained. If homeopathic medicines were not subject to any kind of regulatory control consumers would not have access to such information or assurances.'

'Conversely, if regulation was applied to homeopathic medicines as understood in the context of conventional pharmaceutical medicines, these products would have to be withdrawn from the market as medicines. This would constrain consumer choice and, more importantly, risk the introduction of unregulated, poor quality and potentially unsafe products on the market to satisfy consumer demand.'

However the campaign group Sense About Science hit out at the Department of Health's ruling.

'The Government has ignored the Committee's detailed consideration of the licensing of homeopathic products as medicines,' it said in a statement.

'It has acknowledged that "there will be an assumption that if the NHS is offering homeopathic treatments then they will be efficacious" and that homeopathic products can be licensed with no requirement for evidence that they treat any condition at all. However, the Government has put forward a weak point about 'patient choice' instead of considering what to do about these problems. At a time when PCTs are reviewing expenditure on ineffective treatments, this is perverse.'

'We urge them to go back and give proper consideration to this part of the Committee's report. In the meantime, we recommend a warning on the label of homeopathic products telling people that the product is licensed without any evidence that it works.'

So much for evidence-based government and healthcare decisions!

Brian Kaplan - London | 26 Jul 10
This is truly marvellous news - simply the most heartening thing I've read in PULSE for years.

The government's decision is a victory for liberty and democracy in this country and a slap in the face for those who would seek to thwart the rights of GPs to send patients to fully qualified doctors on the NHS who use homeopathic medicine.
New Study Shows Vaccines Cause Brain Changes Found in Autism

New research, published in the journal Acta Neurobiologiae Experimentalis, shows that monkeys given the 1990s vaccine schedule experienced similar brain changes to those seen in children with autism

Researchers used scanning techniques to assess brain growth and function between vaccinated and unvaccinated monkeys, and in vaccinated monkeys before and after the administration of vaccines

Those monkeys exposed to the vaccines had significant changes in brain growth and development.

The editor-in-chief of the journal, Dr. Kris Turlejski, describes the findings as "alarming" as they "support the possibility that there is a link between early immunization and the etiology of autism."

The same research team has already found that baby monkeys given the hepatitis B vaccine (adjusted for weight) on the first day of life, suffered neurological delays. More about this research can be read at http://homeopathyplus.com.au/hepatitis-b-vaccine-linked-to-brain-damage/

Snails and Slugs Pack their Bags and Leave with Agro-Homeopathy

Gardeners can safely repel slugs and snails from their plants in no time at all with homeopathy.

Farmers 'in-the-know' use a simple homeopathic remedy called Helix tosta (toasted snail shell) to safely defeat the snails and slugs among their crops and report that after just one treatment, these pests avoid their plants for up to four months! Best of all, the slugs and snails will crawl past a juicy meal just to munch on an untreated plant further away. Not even heavy rain seems to reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

While some farmers spray the remedy directly onto the plant, others have had equally good results by watering it into the soil above the roots. It's as if the snails get the message to pack up their shells and leave - and that's exactly what they do.

This is great news for those who are fed up with having their freshly planted seedlings nibbled to the ground - especially as Helix tosta is easy to use, available here in Australia and harmless to people and wildlife. This means no nasty burns if spilt on the skin or trips to the hospital if swallowed by a child. The energetic effect of Helix tosta disappears soon after use, leaving only a healthier and more resilient plant that is completely safe to eat.

What is Helix Tosta?
Helix tosta is the Latin name for a homeopathic remedy made from toasted snail shell. Homeopaths have used Helix tosta for more than a century for certain respiratory problems and tuberculosis, especially when the person is coughing up blood. The remedy has been used as a snail and slug repellent only in more recent times.

Make Your Own Snail Repellent Remedy
Helix tosta is available from the Homoeopathy Plus shop but for those who like a hands-on approach, it is an easy remedy to make. The following instructions will have you producing 100,000 litres of snail and slug repellent from just one small snail shell. Amazing! Never let it be said that homoeopathy is expensive or lacks efficiency.

Instructions:
  1. First, catch your snail.
  2. Drop it quickly into a pot of boiling water to ensure a quick death then remove its body from its shell. If this is a little grisly for you, find an empty shell from one that has hopefully died of old age after a full life.
  3. Clean the shell well, place it into an electric oven or kiln, and roast it at 850°C until the shell turns into a white powder.
  4. Triturate (grind) this powder with lactose (sugar of milk) to a 3X potency, at which time it will easily dissolve into a water-alcohol solution. Then, continue to potentise the remedy to a 6X potency (tutorials 3 and 4 explain how this is done).
  5. You can either continue to use the total volume of the water-alcohol solution produced at each potency stage so you end up with your full 100,000 litres or, for more manageable quantities, just save and use 10% of the liquid from each stage to produce the next potency.
  6. For small gardens, add 10 ml of the 6X stock liquid to 10 litres of water and water into the ground or on the plants. A whole hectare can be treated by adding 500 ml of the 6X stock liquid to 500 litres of water.
  7. If for some strange reason you want even larger stock amounts simply start with more snail shells.
Another Option
Does all this sound too fiddly? No problem. Helix tosta is now available from the Homoeopathy Plus shop in vials of stronger-acting 6C pills. One vial of 100 pills will make up 20 litres of slug and snail repellent. Just add one pill to 200 ml of water, shake vigorously, and then spray or water your plants. Easy!

Does it Really Work?
When we first received our Helix tosta remedy we too wanted to see if it worked. Not a single snail or slug could be found around Fran Sheffield's garden (must be those kookaburras) so it fell to Michelle Keats, another Homoeopathy Plus practitioner, to trial it on her snail infested rhubarb. This is what happened:

"When I was first asked to do this I thought, what a crazy idea!  But I dropped a pill into a bottle of water and sprayed my rhubarb where the snails normally thrive, and waited to see what would happen. The next morning there was not a snail to be seen .... until I turned the leaves over. They had all clustered on the undersides. I sprayed the leaves again but this time, on both sides. Since then it truly has been a case of, 'not a snail to be seen'. I have checked the rhubarb day and night and it remains completely snail free. Some have parked themselves on the wall beside my garden but none have ventured onto the plants.

I am seriously impressed. I've been told that this effect will last a few months, even if it rains, but I guess that is something I will have to wait and see.

Next time I am going to try watering the roots instead of spraying the leaves."

After getting this report from Michelle, we are keen to know what takes place when others use the remedy, so if you decide to give Helix tosta a go we would love to hear what happens to your snails! Everyone who orders a vial during November and December ('09) will be asked to complete a quick and easy 3-question survey:

Did you use the remedy on plants troubled by snails or slugs?

Did you spray the remedy on the leaves of the plant or water it into the soil around the roots?

Was the remedy successful?
There are two ways to order your Helix tosta remedy - either purchase it alone ($15.00) from the Homoeopathy Plus shop OR receive it free of charge with any other order (excluding books) placed during the month of November. A couple of weeks after your purchase, we will email you the survey that should take no more than one minute to answer. Please take the time to fill it out as we would really like to know what happened in your garden!

Why Use Helix Tosta?
Because it is cheap and because it is safe.

As we have already discussed, for a small amount of electricity and preserving alcohol (we suggest vodka), trailer-loads of Helix tosta can be prepared from just one small snail shell. If you would rather save your time and effort though, the pills can now be purchased for a fraction of the cost of other snail killers and deterrents from the our shop.

Helix tosta is also safe. Unlike many other products, Helix tosta has no toxic ingredients to harm you, your plants or pets, wildlife or the environment.

How Does it Work?
Certainly not by chemicals. When correctly chosen, homeopathic remedies stimulate an energetic response from either humans, animals, or plants that improves their resistance to pathogens and disease. This is exactly what happens when Helix tosta is used for deterring snails and slugs. Just like us, plants in less than perfect health are attacked by parasites and disease. When a plant is strengthened by the needed homeopathic remedy (ie. Helix tosta in this instance) it is less attractive to slugs and snails -  they either die out or move to greener pastures.

More than Snails
Homeopathy can be used with all living things. While many people know it treats human health problems, and some know that it treats animals, only a few know that it works just as well with plants for their pests or diseases.

Useful though this knowledge is, agrohomeopathy, homeopathy for plants, is much more than just getting rid of snails and slugs. It is used around the world to treat all manner of plant diseases, repel pests, improve soil productivity and increase crop yield - and all in an environmentally safe and supportive manner.
New Zealand Patients Tell Researchers that Homeopathy Works

A recent survey in New Zealand reported that the use of homoeopathy was 'thriving'.

The researchers gave self-reporting questionnaires at random to patients waiting in their GP's surgeries.

They were asked, among other things:

   1. What conditions they had used homoeopathy for, and
   2. Whether they believed it had helped.

With the survey being conducted in doctor's waiting rooms, the researchers fully expected respondents to be sceptical of homoeopathy. Instead, they were surprised by the results - though reluctant to attribute them to homeopathy being effective.

Of 124 completed surveys, 65% of participants had used homoeopathy for conditions such as bruises, coughs, depression, eczema, joint pain, skin problems, sinusitis, and stress.

More than 92% of users believed that homoeopathy helped at least sometimes while 65% said that helped most times, or every time.

The study was published in May 2009 in the New Zealand Medical Journal (1 ). Its findings confirm those from other studies around the world (2,3,4,5,6 ).

Fetal x-rays may cause schizophrenia in the young

X-rays could be one cause of schizophrenia, especially if you were exposed to the radiation when you were in the womb. Fetal x-rays interfere with brain development, and they could be responsible for other problems such as learning difficulties and memory loss.

Researchers who made the discovery in a series of laboratory tests on monkeys believe that the greatest damage is done if the fetus is x-rayed in the earliest stages of its development inside the womb. Monkeys that had been x-rayed in the womb started showing brain development problems by the time they were five, although earlier tests when they were two years old had not detected any issues. In the tests, the monkeys had learning and memory problems, which are both important signals of schizophrenia.

Researchers at Yale University School of Medicine, who carried out the study, say that the earliest stages in the womb are critical, and any interference could have a detrimental effect on mental - and general - health.

Rats fed junk food pass down cancer risk through multiple generations of offspring

A recent study out of Georgetown University Medical Center has concluded that what you eat can affect your children's and grandchildren's health, even if they eat healthy themselves. Sonia de Assis and her colleagues observed that rats fed fatty, unhealthy food pass on an increased cancer risk to their children and grandchildren.

The study, which was presented at the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C., illustrates that a fatty diet can actually contribute to "epigenetic" DNA modifications, which are inherited changes in DNA patterns. Essentially, one's offspring can inherit DNA changes caused by their parents' unhealthy diets and other environmental factors.

The findings also seem to explain why diseases like breast cancer are more likely to manifest in certain family lines and not in others. If epigenetic DNA changes are altering genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2, then this would explain why some people are more prone than others to develop certain degenerative diseases.

"We think that there may be other means of transmission that are not genetic that can account for breast cancer," explained de Assis in response to the study's findings.

And Assis' perspective is warranted based on her findings.

According to Breastcancer.org, only about 20-30 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have any family history of breast cancer. This means that the other 70-80 percent must be developing it for reasons other than simply genetics.

If a person's parents or grandparents ate a diet rich in processed, chemical-laden foods throughout their lives, then the DNA changes that likely occurred in their bodies may be passed down to their children. Even if they themselves didn't develop cancer, the children will be more likely to develop it, based on the findings of the study.

And if the children also eat junk food diets that lack proper nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and other necessary life components, then their children will be even more prone than they were to develop degenerative diseases like cancer.

But your personal diet and lifestyle choices are still the primary deciding factors for whether or not you develop a degenerative disease. Even if your parents and grandparents ate unhealthy diets all their lives does not mean that you have to get sick. Eating a strong, healthy diet and regularly exercising will do wonders for your health.

Sunbathing boosts men's testosterone (thanks to vitamin D)

By increasing circulating levels of vitamin D, sunbathing may help increase men's testosterone levels and thereby their sex drive, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology.

"Men who ensure that their body is at least sufficiently supplied with vitamin D are doing good for their testosterone levels and their libido among other things," said Ad Brand of the Netherlands-based Sunlight Research Forum.

Researchers tested vitamin D and testosterone levels of 2,299 men over the course of several months. They found that like vitamin D levels, testosterone levels peaked in the summer and dropped during the winter. They also found that men who had at least 30 nanograms of vitamin D in every milliliter of blood had the highest levels of circulating testosterone.

Vitamin D is produced by the body upon exposure to sunlight. Scientists recommend that light-skinned people get at least 15 minutes of direct sun per day on their face and hands, while darker skinned people may need up to three times as much. The body can synthesize all the vitamin D it needs in a fraction of the time it takes to sunburn.

"Enjoying the sun safely while taking care not to burn should help people strike a balance between making enough vitamin D and avoiding a higher risk of skin cancer," said Jessica Harris of Cancer Research UK.

Sunscreen blocks the ultraviolet radiation necessary for the body to synthesize vitamin D.

As people spend less time in the sun, vitamin D deficiency has become an issue of growing concern, especially in regions far from the Equator where the sun is weaker.

Vitamin D is now known to not only help the body develop and maintain a healthy skeleton, but also to help regulate the immune system and prevent against chronic health conditions such as heart disease, dementia and cancer.

Fifty Thousand Cured of Epidemic Nerve Disorder with Vitamin Supplements

The U.S. embargo of Cuba between 1991 and 1993 caused more than just economic consequences for the tiny island nation; it also caused interesting medical consequences that wealthier nations could learn from. The medical consequences of the embargo included an 'outbreak' of a painful nerve problem called 'neuropathy' that ended up affecting over 50,000 people. While it was determined that this 'epidemic' was caused by a virus, this virus was not treated with antiviral medications, antibiotics or any other pharmaceuticals. This epidemic was completely stopped in its tracks and the more than 50,000 people affected were CURED simply by taking a multivitamin supplement.

Neuropathy is a nerve condition that causes pain and decreased sensation in many parts of the body but typically affects the lower extremities where it is called Peripheral Neuropathy. However, it may also affect the hands, the hearing, the face and even the nerves of the eyes causing not only pain and decreased sensation, but also deafness and blindness as well. The Cuban Neuropathy Epidemic, as this outbreak was later called, affected a combination of the extremities, the hearing and the eyes - sometimes in the same person. Young and old alike were affected and medical care was scarce due to many factors related to the embargo:
  • The poor economic conditions
  • The limited medical supplies entering the country and
  • The vast numbers of people that were seeking medical attention for the epidemic
But in this environment of minimal funds in a so-called 'third world' country, the majority of the 50,000 people affected were completely cured of their neuropathy with nothing more than plain over-the-counter vitamin supplements. Even those who were so severely affected that they required hospitalization simply received intravenous vitamin infusions in the hospital while the government instituted a free multivitamin distribution program for the rest of the population. Those with neuropathy were 'cured' and the neuropathy 'epidemic', except for a few isolated cases, ended completely.

Today in the US, there are tens of thousands of people - primarily diabetics and the elderly - who are suffering with neuropathy and are told that there is no cure. They have blood tests, CT scans, perfusion scans, electrical muscle tests and nerve conduction tests. In the end, they are given pain pills and told that they will have to live with excruciating nerve pain and decreased sensation for the rest of their lives. For diabetics, this decreased ability to feel their feet can mean wounds that don't heal and amputated limbs; for the elderly, the ever-present risk of falling and breaking a bone is compounded.

While not ALL cases of neuropathy can be cured with multivitamins, as the Cuban Neuropathy Epidemic teaches us, there certainly are some cases that CAN be improved or cured with vitamins. Yet there are almost no doctors in 'first world' countries that will discuss vitamins for neuropathy despite the lessons from Cuba and from some liberated prisoner-of-war camps where the same phenomenon has been observed. Doctors in western countries require formal double-blind placebo-controlled trials to perceive a therapy as being worthwhile. So the lack of studies using vitamins to treat peripheral neuropathy ensure that people in western countries with this debilitating life-altering illness will not be given the same option of simply trying a safe and inexpensive multivitamin supplement as they would be if they lived in a third world country.

Herbs Help and Heal in our Daily Lives

We have relied on herbs and herbal medicine to treat our ailments and conditions for centuries, and yet even today when so much more is known about herbs and their medicinal properties, many look down on them as being "quackery". Much of the medical world would prefer us to use synthetic commercial drugs for treatment and healing.

Pharmaceutical companies extract what they consider to be the active ingredient from herbs. They isolate this and then go and mix it with synthetic substances. Unfortunately, this can lead to a very powerful but unbalanced drug. And this is when you can get unwanted and even dangerous side effects. Clinical trials for drugs are carried out on a selected few and for, at the very most, a few years while healing plants and herbs have been tried and tested for hundreds of years. They are well known for their effectiveness in the treatment of many diseases.

Think about which treatment you would prefer - chemical or herbal?

Herbal remedies can boost the immune system, increase the body's resistance to infections, heal allergies and raise and renew the vitality of the body. For centuries, herbal medicine has increased overall health, vitality, and life expectancy. We all know about lavender and aloe vera but there is an endless list of herbs to choose from. Here are just a few:

- Goldenseal is known for its antibiotic properties.
- Chamomile relieves stomach distress, calms nerves, fights infection, speeds healing processes, and prevents ulcers.
- Garlic is a strong natural antibiotic. It helps reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart attacks as it prevents the forming of blood clots. Garlic also contains anti-viral properties.
- Ginseng is used to increase stamina, provides liver protection from harmful substances, and stimulates the immune system.
- Feverfew is used to help prevent migraines.
- Spearmint and Peppermint provide indigestion relief.
- Comfrey aids in new cell growth and helps heal wounds because it contains allantoin.
- Ginger may reduce the risk of heart attack by preventing internal blood clots and is also invaluable for motion sickness.

Herbs have also been used as an aphrodisiac through the ages. There are a number that can be used safely to enhance sexual desire and performance so that men and women can be treated for sexual dysfunction, frigidity and impotence. Here herbs can work in two ways - one to relieve anxiety and fear and the other to influence the hormones.

Healing natural oils are of course made from herbs too. You will find a specially formulated and gentle treatment for so many different conditions that you can use safely. Herbs become natural home herbal remedies so easily. You can order a ready-made product online, or if you can boil water, you are well on your way to making your own home remedies. No special equipment or complicated instructions are necessary; you save money and ensure purity and freshness. You can easily make lotions, teas, cordials and tinctures.

Herbal teas are known for their soothing and healing properties, providing health benefits by detoxifying the body, cleansing the colon and calming anxiety. Second only to water, tea is the most frequently consumed drink worldwide. All types of teas have antioxidant properties because of the polyphenols they contain. Herbal teas are considered to be one of the most satisfying and helpful types of herbal supplementation.

So if you are keen to go the natural route, find out more about herbs and plants and how to make your very own fresh treatments in your home. Your health can certainly benefit.

Make Your Own Natural Fluoride-Free Toothpaste

If you're sick of fluoride based toothpaste, who can blame you? Fluoride is widely touted to protect our teeth, but it's actually a poisonous chemical that causes cancer, damages our nervous system, and even creates weak teeth and bones. Fluoride is common in rat poison and the Nazis used to put it in the prisoners' water - because it's known to placate people and make them easier to control. Knowing this - if you haven't already done so - it's probably time to dump your fluoride toothpaste. There are certainly many brands of fluoride-free toothpaste available at your local health food store or almost as easy, and likely better for you, you can just make your own.

If you're going to make your own toothpaste, coconut oil is the perfect place to start. Coconut oil is a key ingredient in homemade toothpastes because it's a powerful, natural antibacterial and antifungal - so it works to kill harmful bacteria in your mouth while you brush. Coconut oil is excellent for your gums and brushing with it regularly can eliminate bleeding, sore gums. The oil kills the bacteria that are responsible for gingivitis - and if you have gingivitis, you might want to massage some coconut oil into your gums regularly, in addition to using it in your toothpaste. Brushing your tongue with the oil helps with thrush, a fungal problem localized in the mouth, and to boot, coconut oil has been found to stop and even reverse some tooth decay.

Another key ingredient in homemade toothpastes is baking soda. Baking soda is used for two reasons. First, it's a mild abrasive that provides a gentle cleansing. Second, it's alkaline. Being alkaline, baking soda can neutralize acids in your mouth that are often at the root of tooth decay. Baking soda also absorbs odors and helps produce sweet breath.

To make your own toothpaste, just use a fifty/fifty ratio of coconut oil to baking soda. Start with a small batch and use a few tablespoons of each. If you like, add a few drops of an essential oil, like peppermint or spearmint, for flavor and a bit of stevia for sugar-free sweetness. After mixing your toothpaste, keep it in a glass container with a lid. Then, just spoon some out for use or just dip your dry toothbrush into it. The mixture doesn't need to be refrigerated and because coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, it'll help keep your toothbrush clean and sanitary too.

Coconut oil is liquid above 76 degrees and solid below, so the mixture can change consistency with the weather. You'll also want to rinse with warm water to prevent the oil from hardening in your sink or drain.
