ABOUT CONTRACEPTION
It seems last weeks email on Norplant stirred up a few people. "Now what do we do?" and "Do you know anything else?" So I did a little googling and came up with a few leads.

If anyone else knows anything alternative for drug-based contraception, pass it along to us.

Enjoy!

Free Talk on BODYTALK

Health care of the future is actually already here. This system of heathcare is both scientifically and philosophically based. It is a system upheld by the latest quantum scientific research, and most importantly its formulae respect and align with the body-mind's own innate wisdom and consciousness. This cutting-edge system is called The Body-Talk System.

Consciousness based assessment Quantum based strategies
The findings of the greatest quantum scientists of the past 100 years now clearly demonstrate that health care can be safe, very effective, and holistic. Until now the term holistic medicine has been incorrectly used as a synonym for alternative healthcare. The principles and research of quantum physics now clearly show us, that authentic holistic medicine is actually quantum medicine This form of medicine is a quantum leap beyond the existing alternative models of healthcare. Quantum medicine acknowledges the Quantum world, its significance and its applicabon not just in technology, but also in the way we formulate healthcare modalities.

The BodyTalk system uses the trained right brain approach of intuitive assessment The beauty and simplicity of Quantum BodyTalk is that it does not override but, instead' respects the bodymind complex's own innate wisdom and consciousness. It then uses the principles of quantum physics to develop strategies for restoring well-being on all levels.

Dr. John Veltheim, founder of the BodyTalk System, invites you to enter the world of quantum medicine. Come and discover how you can change your life in quantum leaps. This public talk is a must for health care practitioners and anyone who wishes to transform their health and wellbeing.

Herbal Contraception

[NOTE from Didi: this newsletter makes no claims, we are only passing information on. Intereseted persons should contact the relevant websites directly]

Numerous herbs have been used historically to reduce fertility, and modern scientific research has confirmed anti-fertility effects in at least some of the herbs tested. Herbal contraception may never reach the level of contraceptive protection as the pill, but it offers alternatives for women who have difficulty with modern contraceptive options or who just want to try a different way. Very little is known about many of the herbs, or about long term side effects or safety concerns. Most herbalists I've spoken with don't recommend herbs for contraception, because of their potential unreliability.

Michael Tierra wrote in his response to questions about herbal contraception and abortion on his website "I lived and explored communally with a number of women herbal methods for contraception or inducing menstruation at within two weeks of its due time. Many herbal methods were tried with mixed results. People who are not interested in getting pregnant are usually not interested in mixed results." With any method of contraception, there is some risk of pregnancy. Each woman has to decide how much of a risk is too much. Most modern forms of birth control are 70% to 99% effective depending on the method chosen. For women who can't use modern forms of contraception, herbs can offer alternatives, and reducing fertility would be better than no birth control at all

Before experimenting with herbal contraceptives, I think it's important to spend some time learning to tell, with accuracy, when you are fertile each cycle. Once ovulation occurs, menstruation should follow in about 14 days. If you can identify when fertility passes each cycle, you'll know when to expect menstration - based on signals your body has given you, rather than an estimated guess (calendar methods). This way - you know if and when menstruation is late. The date ovulation occurs can vary from cycle to cycle, even if we cycle very regularly, our bodies can do the unexpected.

There's not a lot of information available on using herbs for contraception, but there are historical references with clues to what ancient women did, and the scientific community has published some studies, mostly on animals, showing some of the herbs do seem to have contraceptive effects. There have also been informal studies where the herbs were tested by women for contraception. If you try any of these herbs, know that you are experimenting on yourself. Consider beforehand what you would do if the herbs were to fail. For those of us who want to minimize the risk of getting pregnant, herbs may not be the best option for our primary method of birth control.
Each herb has its own way of being taken, some are taken daily, while others are used on an as needed bases, after potential exposure to sperm during a fertile time. Generally, herbs that are taken on a daily basis need some time to take effect, an alternative method of birth control should be used during the waiting period to provide protection. So it's important to know how they are used, when to take them, and how much to use. I will supply as much information as I can, but for many of the herbs there's not a lot of information available. I've created pages for most of the herbs, you'll find links below with more information.

If you choose to use herbal contraceptives you do so at your own risk, be sure to follow any instructions to the letter. Know what you will do if they fail. I'd be interested to know of any experimentations, your experiences add to our collective body of knowledge. I can be reached by email, and I love details!! Some may wonder why I have not experimented with these alternatives any more than I have, to put it quite simply, I'm at a point in my life where I'm not willing to take any chances of getting pregnant. My contraceptive method (fertility awareness) works just fine for me. I believe women should know about all possible options and make the choice for themselves.

Herbal Contraceptives & Implantation Inhibitors
Herbal contraceptives is a catch all category for herbs that have an anti-fertility effect. There are many different ways in which herbs can impair fertility. Some herbs may affect the ovary, while others act upon the uterus, affect normal hormone production or block certain hormones, and others we don't really understand their action, or how they got their reputation. Some herbs have the ability to interfere with implantation, these herbs can be taken on an as needed basis, and are useful as an emergency contraceptive. There are also some herbs that have been found to interfere with normal sperm production, or mobility. Each herb is used in its own way, so its important to have some idea of how they are used, or could be used. Lets further define the possible avenues of actions.

Daily Herbal Contraceptives: Some herbal contraceptives have a cumulative effect in the body, they need to be taken regularly (usually daily) to maintain the contraceptive effect. Often needing a period of time to establish effectiveness, so a barrier method should be employed. Examples are, wild yam and neem.

Wild Yam is a good example of a typical herbal contraceptive, taken daily, needing a period of time to establish effectiveness, and mixed results reported. There is absolutely no scientific documentation that I've been able to find. But I have come into contact with one woman who used it effectively for a year, stopped, and got pregnant her next cycle. This method stems from a midwife in Utah, which was originally mentioned in a magazine, she was never able to find again. She and her ladies experimented with it, to find the dosage which prevented pregnancy consistently, later, she wrote a book about it. I strongly recommend reading her book before attempting it on your own. Doses must be taken twice daily, every day, and never forgotten. The herb needs to be taken for a minimum of a month to allow it time to take effect, waiting two months, may even be better before relying on it for birth control.9

The herbalists I have spoken to however don't have a lot of faith in this herb's ability to prevent pregnancy. Bridgette Mars did an informal study (I never did find out the details) which concluded that the wild yam was not an effective form of contraception. I've also received reports through the grapevine of women who used wild yam, I've heard of both success and failure, I've heard of women using it successfully for a time, then something happens and pregnancy occurs.
Another possibility to consider to increase wild yam's reliability, and to bring your partner into the realm of birth control responsibility, recently, an oral herbal contraceptive for men has come to my attention. Again, I can't verify its effectiveness or safety, but, there has been successful human experimentation conducted in India.
And one final thought to help increase wild yam's reliability, is to ask your lover to withdraw before ejaculation. This way the number of sperm released is considerably less or none, and if there's ever a slip up, you'll be covered. It all depends on how much of a risk you are willing to take when choosing your method of contraception, it can't hurt to do everything possible to minimize the risk.

Neem Oil, a tree from India, with numerous uses, used for just about anything and everything. Quite a bit of scientific research is available about this herb, for both general uses as well as contraceptive uses. Most of the research has been conducted in India, the tree's native home. There are commercial preparations available that can be used for contraception for both men and women. For women it is used vaginally as a spermacide, and men use it orally as a daily contraceptive to induce temporary sterility. I can't vouch for its effectiveness or safety. I encourage you to do your own research.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) a fruit used by ancient women to prevent conception. This is more for historical interest. Rudolf Fritz Weiss notes the seeds contain an oestrone identical to the genuine hormone [estrogen] and states Punica seeds are the best source of plant oestrone to date. What this all means in the big picture, I have yet to figure out! But this may have something to do with its historical uses as a contraceptive. On an interesting note, I found a Roman statue of a woman holding a pomegranate in her hand, and just before that a painting (on a card) done by a famous painter way back when (don't recall his name off the top of my head) of a woman sitting at a table, her expression is distant and quiet, in her hand she hold a pomegranate with a bite taken from the unpeeled fruit.

Implantation Inhibitors: Some herbal contraceptives have the ability to interfere with implantation, the actual effect in the body can vary from herb to herb, but the end result makes it difficult for the egg to implant or maintain its grip on the uterine wall. Implantation occurs about 6 days after the egg has been fertilized. If the egg is unable to get a grip on the uterine wall, it cannot survive, it begins to break down, and menstruation will arrive as usual.

Queen Anne's Lace Seeds(Daucus carota) also known as Wild Carrot, the seeds seem to have the best reputation for contraception. Women from the Appalachian Mountains to India have used the flower heads and mature seeds to prevent conception. This herb is in use today, and has some documentation to it's effectiveness, both in scientific studies and through individuals who've used it. I tend to put more faith in this herb than any other contraceptive herb that I know about to date. Robin Rose Bennett, has done extensive work with queen anne, and she has really refined the method and how to best use it.

It works best as a morning after type contraceptive, the big advantage to this is that it can be used on an as needed basis. The first dose taken within 8 hours of being exposed to sperm, followed by another dose or two as needed. It can also be used in tinture form, which elliminates the need to chew the seeds, which for those of us have tried it, know its pretty yucky. Using the herb as a tincture also elliminates the occassional symptoms of vaginal dryness.

QAL seems to work best for women who have their cycle established and cycling normally. This doesn't necessarily mean regularly. QAL seems to fail most for women who have just come off the pill, who have recently given birth, or experienced some other type of hormonal even that interferes with a woman's natural balance.

Its getting easier to find the seeds for sale than it use to be. If you harvest your own plants please make sure you have correct identification as the inexperienced may mistake QAL for other poisonous members of the carrot/parsley family. Once you are familiar with the plant, its very easy to identify, and remember, Queen Anne has hair legs (the stem is hairy rather than smooth) Please follow the links for more information.

Rutin - This is found at local health food markets, it is also known as Vitamin P. Susun Weed writes it can be used to prevent pregnancy, when taken in tablet form in doses of at least 500 mg daily for several days preceding and following ovulation, or when taken after fertilizing intercourse and continue until menstruation begins.

Neem Oil has also been found to prevent implantation. Testing so far has involved rats; the implantation inhibitory effects were seen in as many as 10 days after fertilizing intercourse occurred, although it was most effective if used within 3 days of fertilizing intercourse. At this time, I really have no idea what a safe human dosage would be. Its more thoroughly researched uses include a spermacide and oral contraception for men.

Smartweed leaves (Polygonum hydropiper) - Susun Weed also writes in her book, The Child Bearing Year Smartweed grows as a weed all over the world, and is used worldwide as a fertility regulator. It contains rutin, quercitin and gallic acid, all of which interfere with normal pregnancy. An infusion can be prepared using 4 ounces of the fresh leaves or one ounce of the dried leaves in a quart of boiled water. Drinking freely until menstrual bleeding begins. Smartweed may be used to prevent implantation after fertilizing intercourse, or to bring on a missed period. If it does not work - do not carry the pregnancy to term as Susun clearly states it is not safe to do so.3

Apricot Kernels Suspected to have anticancer qualities which might treat the developing fetus as a foreign body.5 Nan Koehler uses them in an early anti-implantation remedy. She says to eat 5-10 apricot kernels three times a day, starting immediately following fertilizing intercourse and continuing until menstruation comes, (hopefully on schedule). This is the first of four steps. For this recipe to work a woman must be aware of her cycle and know when she is ovulating. If she doesn't know fertilizing intercourse has occurred and don't start treatment until menstruation is late, this remedy won't work. I will add the rest of the remedy soon.

Other implantation inhibitors.

About the Lunar Conception Method
1. The Discovery

In the middle of 1950s a young Slovakian doctor named Eugen Jonas has discovered something completely unknown to the contemporary science: that in addition to the scientifically established hormonal cycle, women have another fertility cycle that resonates with the cycles of the Moon. He was led to this discovery by his interest in astrology that Dr. Jonas developed in his student years.

It all began from an assertion in an Assyrian source that Dr. Jonas happened to find in a library: "Woman is fertile during a certain phase of the Moon." But which exactly phase? After a lengthy period of research and endless calculations, he managed to find the answer. As he wrote himself, "Finally, on August 15, 1956, I arrived at the first three fundamental rules on conception, the determination of sex and life capability of the fetus, all of which can be precisely formulated" (quoted from [1]).

These three rules are:
  1. The time of fertility occurs during the same phase of the Moon as that in which the woman was born. For instance, if the woman was born at the time of the Full Moon, when the Moon makes an angle of 180° with the Sun, the time of fertility during her adulthood will be whenever the Moon is full, and this independently of her menstrual cycle.
  2. The sex of the future child will be determined by the position of the Moon during the time of the woman's fertility - whether the Moon is found in the male or in the female sign of the Zodiac.
  3. Unfavorable distribution of gravitational forces of the near celestial bodies at the time of conception produces complications during pregnancy, particularly for the fetus.

These rules were officialy tested by experienced gynecologists (Dr. Kurt Rechnitz of Hungary was one of the most active researchers in this ares). It was discovered that on the lunar phase day a woman is usually significantly more fertile than on the day of ovulation in her hormonal cycle.

======
Services provided by this website are based on the discovery of Dr. Eugen Jonas from Slovakia, who back in 1950s found that women have two different fertility cycles. One of them is officially recognized and widely known - this is the hormonal cycle described in many textbooks.

The other fertility cycle was known from times immemorial but was never recognized by the official science as it is based on the relative position between the Sun and the Moon at the moment of woman's birth. In fact, Dr. Jonas has simply rediscovered this cycle following a hint found in an ancient Babylonian source.

The knowledge of Lunar Fertility Cycle can help to understand those cases when women conceive during their menstrual period, or when breast feeding, or when already being pregnant - cases that are very difficult to explain from the officially adopted point of view. But more importantly, this knowledge can become very useful in woman's everyday life.

What Are The Benefits of the Knowledge Of The Lunar Fertility Cycle?
The knowledge of the Lunar Fertility Cycle allows you:
  • To conceive a child of the desired gender with reliability of more than 90% without any unnatural manipulations.
  • To increase the reliability of the natural method of contraception to about 98%.
  • To increase the probability of conception if you are having difficulties with conceiving a child.
  • To increase the probability of a viable birth if you are prone to miscarriages or if you have a history of giving birth to children with serious problems.
You will definitely have many questions and doubts. Was this method scientifically tested? How exactly it works? Can I have some detailed instructions on how to use the knowledge of the Lunar Fertility Cycle? To answer these and many other questions, we have created the About the Method page that describes the Lunar Conception method in more detail, as well as the Questions and Answers page that contains answers to many of the questions asked by the users of our service.

Over Two Hundred Thousand demand USDA ban GE alfalfa once and for all

A few weeks ago, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) began accepting comments concerning the legality of planting Monsanto's genetically-engineered (GE), "RoundUp Ready" alfalfa. Over 200,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), farmers, organic producers, and regular citizens have flooded the dockets of the USDA, opposing the use of the dangerous GMO crop.

After first approving GE alfalfa, the Center for Food Safety sued the USDA for illegally approving the crop without proving that it was safe and providing a proper environmental impact statement (EIS). Federal courts agreed - outlawing the crop until the USDA provided the proper information.

Recently, the USDA submitted an EIS that claims GE alfalfa is safe and that organic farmers are not really all that concerned about the contamination of their crops. In reality, farmers are greatly concerned about GE alfalfa and GE crops in general. They are difficult to control and have the potential to destroy not only the integrity of organic food but also the entire food supply.

More than 75 percent of consumer respondents have also indicated that they do not want to eat GE foods. Among those who purchase organic food, the threat of GE contamination is one of the top five reasons why they purchase organic food in the first place.

The resounding opposition to GE alfalfa should send shock waves to the USDA which seems unconcerned about real food safety and the preferences of the people it is supposed to be protecting. By planting GE crops, particularly alfalfa, the integrity of the entire food supply is at risk from cross pollination and contamination.

According to records, there have been over 200 cases of GE contamination within the past ten years. According to the Center for Food Safety, the most serious contamination problem involves canola, also known as rapeseed, crops. There has been so much cross contamination among canola fields that canola oil can no longer be verified as being truly organic or even non-GE in all of Western Canada.

GE crops threaten the livelihoods of farmers, the integrity of all crops, and the environment itself. They promote the growth of "superweeds", deadly pathogens, and harmful fungi. The pesticides that accompany their use also end up in nearby fields, rivers and streams, and local groundwater supplies.

Concerned citizens need to stay informed and continually oppose any and all attempts to unleash GE crops into the food supply.

Use Natural and Alternative Help for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed condition. It is characterized by widespread chronic pain involving multiple "tender points" in the upper neck, back, shoulders, and hips. Treatments, such as painkillers, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and the injections of anesthetics are rarely effective. However, many may find relief from nature and alternatives as opposed to mainstream drugs and treatments.

A natural alternative which may heal fibromyalgia is to take plenty of colloidal silver (start off with 2-4 ounces per day and maintain at least an ounce a day until you achieve satisfactory results) and plenty of proteolytic/digestive enzymes to dissolve the fibrin (take up to 5 or more capsules two to three times daily on an empty stomach).

Here are some additional options:

Curcumin, magnesium, blackseed oil (Nigella sativa) and herbal oleander extract are all powerful immune modulators which may help. Magnesium deficiency has been associated with Fibromyalgia and it is estimated that as many as 80 to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium.

Consume apples and/or apple juice. They contain "malic acid", a substance that appears to ease pain and inflammation. Consume at least 2 apples, or 2 8-ounce glasses of juice daily.

Other good dietary practices that may help are:

* Eat plenty of essential fatty acids and omega 3's.
* Cut back on consumption of whole grain foods.
* Avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners and foods containing bleached flour.
* Eat yogurt which contains active yeast cultures.

Try acupuncture. The National Institutes of Health has deemed acupuncture to be an acceptable alternative, or part of a comprehensive treatment program, for several types of pain. Acupuncture is a 2,500 year-old practice, and the Chinese believe it works by affecting the energy pathways called "meridians" that run through the body. The "meridians" are thought to carry "qi" (pronounced chee), an energy force that must be in precise balance for good health. Poor health habits, such as getting too little sleep, eating the wrong foods, etc. cause qi to become unbalanced. Acupuncture rebalances qi by stimulating specific points along these meridians with extremely fine needles.

Fibromyalgia has also been associated with heavy metal contamination. Parsley, chlorella and cilantro are all good for removing heavy metals.

Consider niacin and niacinamide. Niacinamide slows down phase 1 of the body's natural detoxification process while niacin speeds up phase 2. Niacin is also known as inositol hexanicotinate, vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid. The body's natural liver detoxification process involves two steps: Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1, toxins are reduced to smaller fragments. These fragments then progress to Phase 2, where they are bound to glutathione, glycine, sulfate and other molecules. In the process, new non-toxic molecules are created that are eliminated via the bile duct, urine or stool. In effect, Phase 1 either directly neutralizes a toxin or modifies it to form intermediates which are then neutralized by one or more of the several Phase 2 enzyme systems.

One or both detoxification phases can be overloaded and/or inefficient. A particularly damaging combination for someone who is ill is an excessive overload of toxins coming into Phase 1 and an inefficient Phase 2. Such a combination is believed in many instances to be the cause of marked environmental sensitivities and drug intolerances and interactions that characterize many fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue sufferers.

Do not give up on exercise. People with fibromyalgia often stop exercising because it is painful. However, inactivity weakens muscles and makes them more sensitive to pain. Low impact aerobics, conditioning exercises, such as swimming, stationary bicycling or stretching, are often helpful for people with fibromyalgia.

Weight Watchers says eat at McDonald's to lose weight
(opinion)

Weight Watchers has now officially endorsed Chicken McNuggets as a "healthy meal" in New Zealand, where McDonald's restaurants will begin carrying the Weight Watchers logo on several menu items. This bizarre and inexplicable decision has now made Weight Watchers the laughing stock of the health world where nutrition and weight loss experts normally don't use "McDonald's fast food" and "weight loss" in the same sentence.

As The Guardian reports, "As part of the deal, which the company says is the first of its kind in the world, McDonald's will use the Weight Watchers logo on its menu boards and Weight Watchers will promote McDonald's to dieters."

Nutritionists, not surprisingly, were shocked at the announcement. The idea of eating at McDonald's to lose weight seems a bit ridiculous, and anyone who believes that eating Chicken McNuggets will cause you to lose weight is arguably one nugget short of a Happy Meal. Sometimes you just have to point out the stupidity of these things, even at the risk of offending someone who has convinced themselves that eating more Chicken McNuggets is their ticket to a slim, fit and sexy body.

Watch your weight balloon!
Weight Watchers, by the way, never actually claims that eating the foods they endorse will cause you to lose weight. If you examine it carefully, even their name isn't really about weight loss. It's about weight watching... as in, watch your weight grow larger by the day...

A "weight watch" is sort of like a "tornado watch" or a "tsunami watch." You keep your eyes peeled and wait for something disastrous to happen -- such as ballooning to 300 pounds while engaging in unhealthy eating McHabits based on snarfing down meat parts from factory-farmed cows raised in bovine concentration camps that might more accurately be called "Cowschwitz."

If Weight Watchers is going to endorse McNuggets, then why not just endorse the entire McDonald's menu and throw the logo behind Big Macs and ice cream shakes, too? It's not like Weight Watchers is trying to "protect its reputation" by not crossing a line, you know. Once you've endorsed McDonald's as "healthy" food, that line is no longer anywhere in sight.

Of course, McDonald's products merely join a long list of questionable foods marketed under the "Weight Watchers" brand name -- a brand that in my opinion has discovered great commercial success in selling the false hope of weight loss to clueless consumers who are unwilling to read ingredients lists on food labels.

Not coincidentally, Weight Watchers has now become the "McDonald's" of the weight loss industry -- and industry filled with so many scams and shams that the idea of eating Chicken McNuggets to lose weight doesn't even seem that strange to many people.

We live in a world where corporate promotional lies are disgusting at best, and criminal at worst. We're told that psychiatric drugs will make you happy, that chemotherapy will make you healthy and that eating at McDonald's will make you lose weight. We're told that sugary junk drinks will give you "energy", that toxic vaccines are necessary for your immune system to work correctly and that buying silly pink-ribbon products will somehow cure cancer.

At the same time, we're told that vitamins are dangerous, that sunlight causes cancer and that there's no such thing as a cure for type-2 diabetes. Everything that's good for you is discredited as bad while everything that's toxic is hyped up as "healthy."

I suppose in light of the corporate-sponsored sick-care insanity that passes for medical advice these days, the idea that eating at McDonald's will make you lose weight doesn't seem as insane as it really should.

But that doesn't make it any more true.

In a world gone mad with dietary misinformation touting fictional foods, insanity can now be marketed to the intoxicated mainstream as if it somehow made sense.

... and people swallow it.

How Runners can Combat Impact Related Injuries the Natural Way

Shoe companies have invested millions of dollars in making high tech, good quality running shoes. The investment has paid off! Well known shoe manufactures have become household names, boosting profits to record highs. However, despite wearing these high tech shoes, research suggests that as many as 30% of runners get injured every year.

Benefits of Running and Walking Barefoot
Man has been running for thousands of years, apparently without the injuries experienced by modern sportsmen/women wearing modern shoes. The human foot is designed to run without the aid of a shoe. In the past runners were either barefoot or wore minimal footwear such as sandals or moccasins with smaller heels and little cushioning relative to modern running shoes. As the incidence of running injuries remains significant despite advances in footwear technology, it seems that the best shoes may be no shoes at all.

Running Shoes and Sports Injuries
The modern running shoe was invented during the 1970's. Prior to that, shoes offered little or no real protection against impact injuries.

Due to the high prevalence of impact related sports injuries amongst runners, research has been undertaken to study the reasons for such injuries and to design the ultimate high tech running shoe. As it turns out, nature got there first. The startling fact is that research has shown high tech running shoes may be contributing to impact related injuries amongst runners.

According to a study conducted by Daniel Lieberman and colleagues at Harvard University it was found that shod runners are more inclined to heel strike as opposed to mid foot or front foot strike when running. Their research also showed that many shod runners, when asked to run barefoot in laboratory conditions on a treadmill or track way, switch to a mid foot or forefoot strike.

Lieberman concludes that, until recently, most humans had much more varied gaits. Sometimes they landed on their heel, but more often they were mid foot or front foot striking. The heel is not designed to absorb impact all of the time. Running in a mid foot or front foot strike style spreads the impact more evenly across the foot. Considering that most runners will strike the ground around 60 times per kilometer, this significantly reduces the likelihood of developing repetitive stress injuries.

The high tech running shoe, on the other hand, gives the runner a false sense of security, allowing him or her to comfortably heel strike most of the time. Unfortunately, even the most advanced shoe cannot prevent the accumulated damage suffered by consistently running in this way.

Easing into Walking and Running Barefoot
People in the modern age are accustomed to wearing shoes, so running or or even walking barefoot is something to be eased into for many - build calf and foot muscles slowly. By practicing each day, barefoot running and walking will eventually come easily, naturally and painlessly.

Biofuels Bust: Not as Good for the Climate as Previously Calculated

By failing to take the larger ecological impacts of biofuels production into account, scientists have allowed governments to present the fuels as better for the world's climate and environment than they really are, according to a paper published in the journal Science. This has put the debate over biofuels dangerously off course, the authors warned.

"We made an honest mistake within the scientific framing of the debate, and we've got to correct it to make it right," said co-author Steven P. Hamburg of the Environmental Defense Fund

Because biofuels such as ethanol and wood chips come from plants that absorbed carbon dioxide as they grew, climate laws in the United States, Europe and other countries consider these fuels "carbon neutral" - they release only what they had already removed, and so need not be considered as carbon dioxide polluters. But this fails to take into account the fact that massive areas of natural forest and grassland are being cleared to plant biofuels - a process that not only threatens biological diversity and immediately releases all the carbon dioxide stored in the bodies of those plants, but also permanently removes important planetary "carbon sinks."

This oversight has since been legislated and made its way into all major climate treaties. Biofuels are treated as carbon neutral and governments are providing incentives for their production, while carbon emissions from land-use activities remain glaringly unregulated.

"If you only count part of the carbon, you set up a set of incentives that are all wrong," said Jae Edmonds of the U.S. Energy Department's Pacific Northwest Laboratory.

Lead author Timothy D. Searchinger of Princeton University warned that the biofuels oversight must be corrected immediately, before the industry becomes too large and influential.

"You think it's hard to solve now?" he said. "If you don't solve it now, it just doesn't get solved."

Magnesium helps you stay smart, and improves memory

17 March 2010

If you want to be a little smarter, increase the amount of magnesium in your diet. The nutrient is one of the most vital for healthy brain functioning, something that becomes increasingly important as we get older. High magnesium levels in your body can improve cognitive abilities and memory, and can stop the brain from deteriorating as we age, a new study confirms. Beijing University recently tested magnesium levels on laboratory rats to see how their brain functioning improved. The rats given a high-magnesium diet displayed improved cognitive abilities compared with rats fed a standard diet, which is usually thought to contain sufficient magnesium for our body's needs. Aside from supplements, magnesium can be found in spices, nuts, in coffee and tea, and in green leafy vegetables, such as spinach. (Source: Neuron, 2010; 65: 165-77).

Heat therapy kills cancer cells, scientists prove

In February 2009, WDDTY told its subscribers that heat treatment is a proven way to kill cancer - and now researchers have demonstrated it in laboratory trials. Cancer cells were altered in one therapy that involved a sustained heat of 43 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes - and the cells started to die when they were exposed to a burst of heat therapy of 50 degrees Celsius for one to two minutes. At that level, there was permanent tissue damage to a prostate tumour, and which led to necrosis, or cell death. The laboratory experiments have been carried out at the Hashemite University in Jordan. In the WDDTY report, other experiments have demonstrated that cancer cells can be killed when exposed to temperatures of 42 to 43 degrees Celsius. Short and sharp: the best way to exercise (as long as you're young)
http://www.wddty.com

What's the best type of exercise? For those who have limited time on their hands, it's good news - because the most effective way to get fit is by short and sharp training bursts. Ten one-minute sprints on a training bike achieve as much as hours of strenuous 'slogging', researchers from the McMaster University in Canada have discovered. The key is little and often, and to take rests between bursts of activity, says lead researcher Martin Gibala. However, he warns that the short and sharp approach is ideal for younger people; if you are older, less fit or overweight, the standard approach of moderate and lengthy exercise is still the safer option.
