Uva Ursi herb reverses urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections are usually easily treated with a powerful herb known as Uva Ursi (bearberry). (For reference, in Spanish the word "Uva" means a grape / berry, and in Latin, "Ursa" means a bear.)

Here, we bring you an amazing collection of supporting information about uva ursi from health authors like Earl Mindell and Dr. Jonathan Wright. Read this and you'll learn things like the amazing history of indigenous use of this herb across the cultures of the world. Read and enjoy!

Uva ursi and urinary tract infections
Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi): Uva ursi, which is also known as bearberry, grows in the northern United States and Europe. It has diuretic, astringent and antiseptic properties. Uses: Uva ursi is used to treat urinary tract infections. The urine must be alkaline for uva ursi to be effective (do not use with cranberry juice which makes the urine acidic). Cautions: Uva ursi is toxic in high doses and should not be used in pregnancy or by anyone who has a kidney infection.
- The New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Herbs by Nicola Reavley

Uva ursi, Arctostaphylos uva ursi, is a urinary tract antiseptic and diuretic. It increases renal circulation and stimulates tubular function. Research claims uva ursi works best in an alkaline pH for treatment of urinary tract infections.
- Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth by Sharol Tilgner, N.D.

Uva ursi - More than a thousand years ago, the Chinese and Native Americans were using uva ursi to treat urinary tract infections in both men and women. This herb contains a substance called arbutin, which is converted in the urine to hydroquinone, a urinary antiseptic. Uva ursi is a natural diuretic - it literally flushes out the kidneys. If you use uva ursi regularly, you will need to replenish potassium, which can be lost when you lose fluid. Be sure to eat foods high in potassium, or take a potassium supplement.
- Earl Mindell's Secret Remedies by Earl Mindell

For all its good, uva ursi can slightly irritate the kidneys and upset your stomach if used for more than a week or so. However, this should give you plenty of time to knock out even the most stubborn bladder infection. One way to mellow out uva ursi's harshness is by adding marshmallow to your formula. Marshmallow soothes the urinary tract and also fights urinary tract infection in a way similar to uva ursi, although it is not quite as powerful. Your best bet is to take these herbs as indicated below, then, when the symptoms have subsided, switch to cranberry, blueberry or uma-boshi.
- Herbs for Health and Healing by Kathi Keville

Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi) Medicinal Use: Urinary tract infections. Parts Used: Leaves. Form Used: Tincture, capsule. Potential Side Effects: None in normal doses, but higher doses may cause cramping, nausea, or vomiting. Comments: It's one of the best herbs for urinary tract infections.
- Prescription for Natural Cures: A Self-Care Guide for Treating Health Problems with Natural Remedies Including Diet and Nutrition, Nutritional Supplements, Bodywork, and More by James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D.

Uva ursi is indicated for atonic, chronic conditions and infectious conditions of the urinary tract. Use: (a) Urinary tract antiseptic, (b) Diuretic, (c) Increases renal circulation, (d) Stimulates tubular function. Research claims uva ursi works best in an alkaline pH for treatment of urinary tract infections. The leaves contain arbutin, an antiseptic that is hydrolyzed in gastric fluid to hydroquinone. In alkaline urine, hydroquinone is an effective antimicrobial agent and uva ursi itself tends to alkalinize the urine.
- Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth by Sharol Tilgner, N.D.

Native Americans sometimes combined uva ursi with tobacco and smoked it. It was also used as a beverage tea in some places in Russia. The berries were considered beneficial as a weight-loss aid. It was found in wide use for infections of all parts of the body because of its astringent, or "drying," action.
- The Natural Pharmacy: Complete Home Reference to Natural Medicine by Schuyler W. Lininger, Jr. DC

Another recently discovered property of uva ursi is the inhibition of tyrosinase by a 50% alcoholic extract. This effect impairs melanin synthesis, which leads the authors to suggest it could be used as a whitening agent for the skin. However, no clinical trials have been reported. CLINICAL APPLICATIONS: Crude extracts are widely used in Europe as components in certain diuretic and laxative products, but the major use of uva ursi is as a urinary disinfectant in cases of urinary tract infection. Uva ursi is reported to be especially active against E. coli.
- Textbook of Natural Medicine 2nd Edition Volume 1 by Michael T. Murray, ND

Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi), also known as bearberry, is one of the best herbs for treatment of urinary tract infections. The leaves, long used by practitioners of herbal medicine, have antiseptic effects. The leaf extract is also a diuretic, helping to remove excess liquids from the body. As a popular home remedy, uva ursi was traditionally used for treatment of bladder and kidney infections, and kidney stones. It was also recommended for treatment of bronchitis.
- The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies by Mark Stengler, N.D.

Kidney Stones: A number of physicians and researchers have reported that uva ursi can be helpful for the prevention of kidney stones. Urinary Tract Infections: I recommend uva ursi for any infection of the urinary tract. I usually combine it in formulas with herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal, buchu, marshmallow, and usnea. A number of companies produce variations on this formula for people who have urinary tract infections.
- The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies by Mark Stengler, N.D.

Uva ursi contains arbutin, a chemical known to have antimicrobial activity against E. coli. Take 250 mg of uva ursi in capsule form or 5 ml of the tincture form four times a day. Horsetail is another herb traditionally used to treat urinary tract infections. Take 500 mg or 2 ml of the tincture four times a day. Juniper berry helps increase urination to rid the bladder of bacteria.
- 1000 Cures for 200 Ailments: Integrated Alternative and Conventional Treatments for the Most Common Illnesses by Marshall Editions

Drinking aloe vera juice may also reduce urinary crystals. Uva ursi is traditionally used for urinary tract infections, and relieves pain and cleanses the urinary tract. Take 250-500 mg three times a day, but do not use this herb for more than two weeks. Drink 2-4 cups of juniper berry tea, a strong diuretic kidney cleanser, every day until the stones pass. Horsetail also has diuretic qualities. You can take 2 g a day of the capsule form or drink 2-3 cups of the tea a day.

Ear acupuncture eases back pain in pregnant women

The September issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology contains a report that illustrates the effectiveness of ear acupuncture in alleviating lower back and pelvic pain in pregnant women. The study revealed that among 159 women who were given the acupuncture treatment, all reported reduction in overall pain and functional improvement in mobility.

The unique circulatory network that exists between the mother and her developing child is delicate, leading many prenatal health providers to shy away from prescribing any pharmacological methods of intervention to alleviate the lower back pain associated with pregnancy. Since drugs carry heavy side effects for both mother and child, researchers have continued to investigate safer, simpler, more natural methods of mitigation.

Dr. Shu-Ming Wang of the Yale School of medicine suggests that simple, inexpensive acupuncture treatments offer a drug-free method of easing common back and pelvic pain in pregnant women and may help stave off perpetual chronic back pain throughout their lives.

Three groups of women were included in the study; one group receiving real acupuncture, the second group receiving acupuncture in "sham" points, and the third group receiving nothing but self-care. Eighty-one percent of the women in the legitimate acupuncture group experienced a 30 percent or greater reduction in pain while only 59 percent in the phony acupuncture group experienced such results. Of the group receiving no treatment, 47 percent indicated reduction in pain.

After only one week, 37 percent of the women receiving genuine acupuncture treatment were pain free compared to 22 percent in the fake group and only 9 percent in the self-care control group. Those who received veritable acupuncture treatment also experienced a significant improvement in mobility and function compared to the other two groups.

Though not all women remained free of pain in the weeks following the study, researchers indicate that longer-term treatments may produce more sustained relief. Further study is also needed to verify characteristically why some women respond more favorably than others to acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture continues to make inroads into mainstream medicine due to its veritable effects on reducing pain. Studies conducted on a wide cross-section of pain conditions have seen favorable results, leading the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to support acupuncture as a viable treatment option.

From fibromyalgia and chronic headaches to cramps and arthritis, alternative and complementary doctors are witnessing excellent results in prescribing this inexpensive treatment option for their patients' ailments rather than pharmaceutical drugs.

Natural Help for Sinus Infections

As fall allergy season heads into winter cold season, many of us are prone to suffer from sinus infections. Symptoms of sinus infections, or sinusitis, are similar to a common cold, but last longer. If symptoms last longer than two weeks, you probably have sinusitis. Sinus infections can last from three weeks up to three years if left untreated. Fortunately there are several natural remedies which may relieve and conquer sinus infections.

Here are some of the best:
  • Colloidal Silver can be used to irrigate the sinus cavities as well as taken internally to help fight off the infection. To irrigate the sinus cavities thoroughly, use a pump spray or squirt bottle and use a good amount of silver to get in all the sinus passages.
  • Grapefruit seed extract is a wonderful supplement for sinus infection which can make a sinus infection disappear after only couple of days. Do not take the drops on an empty stomach, especially early in the morning.
  • Using a neti pot helps keep your nasal passages healthy with all the pollution, pollen, dust and other irritants in the air. All you need to use in it is non-iodized salt, preferably sea salt.
  • Potassium supplements help dry up mucous.
  • Drink apple cider vinegar throughout the day in large glasses of water. ACV thins mucus.
  • Cayenne pepper tincture will help clear the sinuses and it is also a great overall cold remedy.
  • Let a hot shower run onto your forehead and nose and then clear all the mucus from your sinuses. Do this several times a day.
  • Oil Pulling, a wonderful remedy from India, often alleviates sinus congestion within about 10-15 minutes.
  • Licorice root helps reduce inflammation and stimulates the immune system to fight sinus infections. There are two types of licorice products.
  • Eucalyptus soothes sore throats. It also has antiseptic properties and can help shrink swollen tissues such as swollen sinus passages.
  • Peppermint can help calm mucous membranes. You may drink peppermint tea or steep the peppermint and breathe in the steam. You can also use peppermint in aromatherapy. The scent of peppermint when inhaled helps to ease your breathing.
  • Drink eight to ten glasses of water every day.
  • Drink warm tea to help dilute mucus.
  • Ginger has long been known to relieve and prevent headaches. It is also an anti-inflammatory and can help relieve pain. Take in tincture or capsule form according to directions.
  • Lemon balm is helpful in fighting off viruses and bacteria. Steep the dried leaves for 10 minutes in hot water. Strain and drink the tea warm. Alternatively, lemon balm tea can be used as a gargle.
  • Echinacea often will knock out a cold in only a matter of days when taken in quantity. It helps boost the immune system and makes it function better. Take in tincture or capsule form with increased dosages at the onset of illness and decrease after three or four days. Do not take if you have an allergy to ragweed.
  • Vitamin C and zinc can help shorten the duration of colds as well as reduce cold symptoms. Sinus infections often come as a result of lingering colds. If you fight a cold early, you can help stave off a sinus infection. Take capsule or lozenges during cold season, especially with the onset of any symptoms.
  • Foods high in antioxidants help to build the immune system and prevent infections in the first place. Some of these foods include blueberries, cherries, artichokes, cranberries and pomegranates.

How to Combat Colds and Flu with Tissue Salts

Tissue salts, also known as cell salts, are minerals - the same minerals that are found in the earth`s rocks and soil. Gentle, safe and non-toxic, tissue salts can be bought in pill form from virtually any pharmacy or health store and can provide the help the body needs in order to fight colds and flu.

Tissue Salts Explained
Dr. Schuessler, a 19th century German physician, discovered that the twelve of the inorganic salts found in the human body have specific physiologic functions. In short, he maintained that the inorganic mineral substances that constitute our planet earth are the complete basis of the composition of our body`s bone and blood, organs and muscles and he found that a cell salt deficiency or imbalance generally resulted in loss of health.

"Tissue salts are found in our food, or should be, when grown organically in mineral-rich soil. Modern-day agricultural practice, however, has leached soil of its life-sustaining minerals and promoted instead chemical fertilizers". Margaret Roberts, Tissue Salts for Healthy Living

Tissue salts are made by grinding minerals in lactose over six attenuations, a process called trituration. The result is a pill that is easily absorbed, containing a minute amount of a specific mineral salt.

Best Tissue Salts for Colds
To relieve the congestion, headaches and general symptoms of a common head cold, dissolve 2 each of the following tissue salts under the tongue and hourly thereafter until symptoms subside.

Ferrum Phos tablets (tissue salt no.4) to treat throbbing headaches, congestion, sore throat, runny nose and coughs.
Kali Mur (no. 5) to treat wheezing, aches, sinusitis, frequent common colds.
Kali Sulph (no. 7) to relieve symptoms of blocked nose and a sinus headache.

Best Tissue Salts for Flu
In addition to the above tissue salts, add the same dosage of Silica (tissue salt no. 12) to help heal infections and frequent bouts of flu.

If deciding to take tissue salts, it is not necessary to consult a homeopathic professional unless conditions are chronic, such as recurring throat infections or a history of worsening health problems. If a sick individual is already taking a remedy prescribed by a homeopath, however, taking another remedy out of sequence might interfere with or slow down treatment, according to qualified homeopathic practitioner, Joan Macdonald.

Food Sources for the above Tissue Salts
Herbs and foods containing Ferrum Phos include celery, horseradish, spinach, lentils, radishes, onions, walnuts, strawberries, apples, lettuce and nettle tops.

Herbs and foods that contain Kali Mur include yarrow, ginger, fennel, basil, borage and sage, green beans, carrots, beetroot, cauliflower, asparagus, peaches, apricots, pineapples lemons and plums.

Herbs and foods that contain Kali Sulph include watercress, parsley, linseed, mustard, melissa, oats, lettuce, endives, chicory, almonds, rye and wholegrain bread.

Herbs and foods rich in Silica include dandelion, horsetail, comfrey, maize, barley, oats, buckwheat, rice, soya beans, oranges, guavas and pomegranates.

Military Horror: Proposed Military Robot Would Literally Feed off Dead Battlefield Bodies to Power Itself

Controversy erupted when reports emerged that the Pentagon was close to completing a robot designed to forage for its own fuel by consuming "biomass in the environment," raising concerns that the Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR) might be intended to fuel itself from the bodies of the dead.

The EATR was designed by Robotic Technology Inc. (RTI), in cooperation with Cyclone Power Technologies Inc.

According to RTI, EATR is an autonomous robotic platform able to perform long-range, long-endurance military missions without the need for manual or conventional re-fueling. The patent pending robotic system can find, ingest and extract energy from biomass in the environment, as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, diesel, propane and solar) when suitable."

The vagueness of the term "biomass" led many commentators to ask whether the Pentagon was actually developing a cannibal killer robot. Responding to such allegations, RTI insisted that the robot will be programmed to consume only vegetable matter.

"Despite the far-reaching reports that ["biomass"] includes "human bodies," the public can be assured that the engine Cyclone has developed to power the EATR runs on fuel no scarier than twigs, grass clippings and wood chips - small, plant-based items for which RTI's robotic technology is designed to forage. Desecration of the dead is a war crime under Article 15 of the Geneva Conventions."

RTI president Bob Finkelstein was vague as to how the robots would be programmed to avoid human or animal flesh.

"There are certain signatures from different kinds of materials," he said.

Even if the robot does not feed on humans, its use may still constitute a war crime.

"The robot steamers are envisaged as being equipped with powerful articulated arms in order to rip trees or bushes out of the earth and stuff them into their glowing maws," wrote Lewis Page in The Register.

"By way of a treat, it seems that the machines will also be able to loot or forage more conventional fuel supplies from the petrol tanks of cars," he wrote. "Hapless drivers or householders will be in no position to object to such robotic plundering."

Make Healthy, Sweet Baked Treats with Stevia and Dates

Many people think living a healthy, natural life and eating good quality health food means eliminating sweet treats from their diets forever. Not true - there are so many healthy, sweet alternatives such as honey, stevia and dates which can replace refined sugar and processed junk food. Making delicious treats with these healthy ingredients will satisfy a sweet tooth but won't damage the body in the way that sugar does. Try these macaroons, strawberry jam and date squares made with stevia and date sugar.

Recipes for Coconut Macaroons and Strawberry Jam with Stevia

Stevia is a healthy alternative to sugar. It is a sweetener originally from Paraguay which comes from a sweet herb and has been used by South American natives for centuries to sweeten their beverages and medical preparations.

Stevia is not harmful to health and has zero calories. Be careful at all times to use very small quantities of Stevia to sweeten salad dressings, sauces and so on. It is incredibly sweet. A cookie recipe made with Stevia may only need a quarter of a teaspoon to sweeten the whole batch.

Stevia Coconut Macaroons

Ingredients:
2 cups dried, shredded coconut
4 large egg whites
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Pinch salt
1 teaspoon dried, ground stevia leaf
Optional: 1/2 cup ground almonds or 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon may be added

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (325F).
2. Whip the egg whites and vanilla until stiff and glossy.
3. Fold in the coconut, stevia and salt into the egg white mixture until well combined.
4. Make drop cookies on a baking sheet lined with rice paper.
5. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes or until slightly brown.

Stevia Strawberry Jam

Ingredients:
1kg (2lb) fresh strawberries, cleaned and sliced
1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons stevia powder
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup water

Method:
1. Allow the strawberries to simmer in the water in a heavy based saucepan, mashing when soft.
2. Dissolve Stevia in the lemon juice and stir into the strawberries. Simmer until thickened, about 30 - 40 minutes.
3. Cool and refrigerate in a covered glass jar.

Recipe for Date Squares with Date Sugar
Date sugar is made by simply dehydrating dates and grinding them until coarse and granulated-looking. It contains fiber and nutrients, just as fresh dates do. It works very well, substituted cup-for-cup, in any baked-goods recipe that calls for brown sugar. For those who don't like the taste of dates, the flavor does not come across too strongly in baked goods.

Healthy Date Squares

Ingredients:
3/4 cup chopped dates (If dates are not a favorite, raisins can be substituted)
6 tablespoons melted butter
1 beaten egg
1/4 cup date sugar
1 cup oats
1/4 cup wholewheat flour
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 teaspoon mixed baking spice (cinnamon, cardamom and cloves)
1/4 tsp baking soda

Method:
1. Mix dates, melted butter, date sugar and then stir in egg.
2. Add wholewheat flour, nuts, spices and baking soda.
3. Mix well and press into a greased baking pan.
4. Bake for around 20 minutes at 350 degrees F, or 160 degrees C

A Dirty Colon is Often the Cause of Bad Breath
(Natural News)

Most of the population wakes up with bad breath, or what's known as morning breath. However, it's not widely known that bad breath, including morning breath, is a sign of a toxic colon and a toxic body. It's a direct path from your mouth to your colon, and the reverse path is also true. So, when you have bad breath, you're often actually smelling filth from your colon.

Morning breath is common because our bodies generally detoxify themselves in the evenings when we are asleep. They take this time to do so because they aren't digesting food, which gives our bodies the extra energy to divert to detoxification. Morning breath is essentially a detoxification symptom, which is a symptom that occurs when your body is working on detoxifying something that needs to be removed. Actually, the greater the toxicity situation in your body, the worse your morning breath will be.

A thoroughly detoxified body, and even a partially detoxified body, will no longer have bad breath or even morning breath. Honestly, a thoroughly detoxified body can go for days without brushing the teeth without a sign of bad breath. Yet, most of the population has bad breath every morning, and often throughout the day. It makes breath mints, chewing gum, and mouthwash popular, but such filth in the body is a disaster for our health.

Body odor also commonly disappears with deep cleansing because a cleansed body no longer has the internal filth inside that is causing a daily odor. Body odor is often also the smell of a toxic colon, an odor that leaks out through the porous skin. Similarly, a cleansed person will no longer have the need for deodorant and can go days without showering without a sign of body odor.

When you understand this, you might look at the age that children begin to have body odor. It's generally around 12 or 13 years old, and this provides a clue as to the age that people today generally become really toxic.

While it's not recommended, our bodies can handle some degree of mistreatment. Mistreatment includes eating processed foods, white sugar, fried foods and large amounts of cooked foods. Mistreatment also includes taking chemical drugs - prescription or otherwise - and having chemicals in our foods, personal care products and environment. However, when these are regular occurrences for years on end, our bodies don't stand a chance against toxic build up.

Body odor and bad breath are often the first signs people will see when their bodies are toxic. It might be many more years before additional signs, like various health problems, will be seen. But no body will escape health, emotional or other problems with loads of filth inside. It's simply against the laws of nature.
