Probiotics Prevent Colds and Flu
Probiotics and digestive enzymes prevent colds and flu; research has
shown. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in the intestines.
Harmful bacteria include those like E. coli (Escherichia col), etc, but
there are many bacteria that inhabit our gut that help with our
digestion. Now, studies have shown that probiotics also help the immune
response by both preventing colds and flu and speeding recovery time.
Probiotics
are included in many forms of yogurt, kefir [mala or lala], and other cultured milk
products, such as sour cream. Most probiotics help the immune system
prevent diseases such as irritable bowel, diarrhea, and allergies.
A
study published in the medical journal Pediatrics was conducted on 326
children in China. They were from the age of three to five years old.
The children were given milk twice daily that contained the probiotics
Lactobacillus acidophilus by itself, or combined with Bifidobacterium
animalis. The children were followed for six months, from November 2005
to May 2006.
The study results were impressive and showed that
the one probiotic was helpful but the benefit was enhanced in the group
who took the two probiotics together. The group who took the
Lactobacillus contracted had half the number of fevers of the placebo
group (53%). They also had 41% less coughs and 28% less runny noses.
When they became sick, their illnesses were one third shorter than the
placebo group (32%) and they used 68% less antibiotics. They missed 38%
less school than the placebo group as well.
The children who
took both Lactobacillus acidophilus along with the Bifidobacterium
animalis contracted over two thirds less fevers than the placebo group
(72%). They had 62% less coughs, and 59% less runny noses. Their
duration of illness was nearly HALF of that in the placebo group (48%).
They missed slightly less school than the children taking only one
probiotic (32% compared to the other group's 38%), but they used 84%
less antibiotics compared to the placebo group, surpassing the other
group's level of 68% less usage.
The study was double blind and
placebo controlled, and it was conducted during the winter cold and flu
season. Though the study was funded by a Danish company that makes
probiotics, Danisco, similar results have been sited elsewhere.
With
the benefits from probiotics proven in other areas of digestive health
and improved immune function, there is reason to add probiotics to a
healthy diet regime year-round.

Make Your Own Probiotic Supplements
Home-made kefirs [In Kenya: mala or lala] are growing in popularity as probiotic food sources
while spreading as a community sharing activity. There are two types of
Kefirs: Milk kefir and water kefir. The latter is not well known. Both
can be home made from fermenting friendly bacterial sources, called
starter grains, to provide potent but very inexpensive probiotics.
A
rich supply of probiotics is essential for good digestion, and good
digestion is essential for good overall health. If you've shopped for
probiotic supplements, you are probably aware of their price tags and
how it affects your monthly budget. But if you tune into any of the
kefir communities, you will be able to provide yourself with a
continual supply of supplemental probiotics at virtually no cost.
Water and Milk Kefir Basics Water
kefir is less expensive with possibly more benefits than milk kefir.
It's the perfect option for the lactose sensitive, vegan, or anyone who
just don't trust milk products. But the starter grains, sometimes
called Tibetan Mushrooms or Kefir Fungi, are a little more difficult to
obtain than milk starter grains.
However, once you obtain either
milk or water starter grains, you can keep culturing those grains for
almost forever. Milk kefir grains look like miniature popcorns or mini
cauliflowers. The tiny water kefir grains are relatively colorless.
They both contain combinations of friendly bacteria and yeasts that
flourish during short fermentation periods.
Milk kefir grains
can be ordered from a few online commercial sources, while water kefir
starter grains usually have to be obtained from other water kefir
users. Water kefir grains multiply rapidly, enabling users to want to
give many away, while milk kefir grains do not multiply as much even
though they can be used over and over.
Kefir Benefits With
either kefir, there are many health benefits reported. The friendly
yeasts in the cultures dominate the unfriendly yeasts. Many users
report that with continual use over time, several chronic health
maladies vanished. And most report a rejuvenation of energy and and
overall well being.
Milk kefir is a much better source of
probiotics than yogurt, not only in quantity, but diversity. And there
is a belief that water kefir is even superior to milk kefir.
From Dolores Sanchez-Penalver's "Water Kefir" free pdf document comes this list of friendly bacteria and yeasts: Lactobacillus
brevis, Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus , Lactobacillus alactosus,
Lactobacillus casei casei, Lactobacillus pseudoplantarum, Lactobacillus
plantarum, Streptococcus lactis, Streptococcus cremeris, Leuconostoc
mesenteroides,Saccharomyces florentinus, Saccharomyces pretoriensis,
Kloeckera apiculata, Candida lambica, Candida valida.
Got Grains? Make Your Kefir Both
milk and water kefir instructions are virtually the same except for two
areas. Although the milk kefir grains can be used over and over, they
do not multiply nearly as much and as rapidly as the water kefir
grains. So the water kefir grains beg to be given to others to start
their kefir production!
The milk in milk kefir is the basis of
fermentation for the kefir grains, while the water kefir requires brown
cane sugar or honey to kick it into fermentation. So what is offered
here are the water kefir basic instructions. Simply eliminate the brown
sugar for milk kefir. For more details, check out the source links
below.
You will need a large mouth glass or ceramic jar, no
plastic, of at least a little more than a liter or quart. Bigger is
better as the gases from the fermentation process will have more room,
eliminating the possibility of your jar exploding!
You should
use spring or mineral water, at least water that is free of chlorine.
No metal utensils should touch the grains. Here, plastic is
appropriate. A plastic mesh strainer, if available, is ideal also.
Remove around three heaping tablespoons of starter grains and place
them into the jar with around a liter or quart of good water.
Then
add four tablespoons of the brown sugar. Mix gently with anything but a
metal mixer or spoon. Cover with either a lid or cloth attached by a
rubber band. Place the jar in a dark place that's at room temperature.
The minimum fermentation time is 24 hours, maximum is 72 hours. The
longer the stronger.
Most instructions prefer you wait until
ready after 24, 48, or 72 hours then pour out the complete solution
into another container, which can be refrigerated. Or simply pour out a
glass at a time until the 72 hours expires. During the 72 hour period,
a gentle daily mixing is a good idea.
Either way, after the
liquid is drained, the kefir grains need to be removed and rinsed with
water that is chlorine free. After rinsing, restart the process again
with the original jar. You'll be amazed at how many extra kefir grains
are available after the first run!
Anywhere from one to three glasses is recommended. With water kefir, it's easy to drink more than one glass per day.
There
is a caveat. If you don't stay on top of the kefir ritual, you can lose
the starter grains to spoilage. So this does require some discipline.
But you can continue forever, and it's virtually free!

Cancer industry abandons science to keep pushing mammograms that harm women The cancer industry has blatantly abandoned science these past two
weeks by insisting women under 50 should receive annual mammograms even
though the industry's own scientific task force concluded that such
screenings result in too many false positives. Essentially, the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force took a good, hard look at the science
and concluded that mammograms harm far more women than they help (for
women under 50, anyway). But when they announced the new
recommendations that women under 50 should avoid mammograms -- and women over 50 should only get them every other year -- the cancer industry cried foul.
Radiologists, oncologists, Big Pharma pill-pushers and cancer
industry non-profits all banded together to declare, "We are abandoning
the science! We want more mammograms for more women, science be damned!"
Of course, they all still claim
to be "scientific," but what they really do is selectively cherry-pick
which bits and pieces of the scientific evidence they choose to adhere
to. And when it comes to these new mammogram recommendations, they've
decided to simply abandon the science and keep pushing more radiation
imaging tests for women (mammography).
The cancer industry is a complete failure What you are witnessing here, folks, is the desperate last gasps of a failed industry. Their technologies do not save lives, their drugs do not cure cancer, and their "science" doesn't add up. The cancer industry is a fraud,
and now its fraudulent nature is finally becoming apparent to everyone.
It even has the mainstream media (USA Today) describing the failures of
mammography in articles like the one you'll see here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health...
Here's
something else you need to know: The cancer industry hasn't merely
abandoned science in terms of mammography; it has also abandoned all
science with the pushing of chemotherapy. Did you know there has never been a randomized, placebo-controlled study proving that chemotherapy saves the lives of breast cancer patients?
That
evidence doesn't exist. The whole "treatment" scam is based entirely on
fiction. Chemotherapy only works at all against three rare types of
cancer, and breast cancer isn't one of them.
In defending the
new mammography guidelines, Dr. Timothy Wilt, a member of the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force, said that the task force
recommendations "were based on the most rigorous peer review of
up-to-date, accurate information about the evidence about the harms and
benefits of treatment."
He repeated that women under 50 should
never receive mammograms, and women 50 or over should only receive a
mammogram every two years.
The American Cancer Society, quite
predictably, has a real problem with that recommendation. Its entire
success (and power) depends on more people getting cancer, and
one of the best ways to make sure that happens is to keep pushing for
more mammograms. In opposing the new mammography recommendations, the
ACS has now abandoned science, too.
Chemotherapy: The chemical holocaust When cancer doctors tell you that "chemotherapy will save your life," they are lying to you. And they lie thousands of times a day, deceptively recruiting women into modern medicine's version of a chemical holocaust.
The cancer industry offers no cures. A cure for cancer would destroy the industry. It would wipe out billions of dollars in profits that drug companies, radiologists
and oncologists are counting on right now. This is precisely why the
cancer industry dares not tell women the truth about vitamin D, for
example, which prevents 77% of all cancers, including breast cancer.
If every woman in America
were given vitamin D supplements, cancer rates would plummet by up to
77% in a single year, and the cancer industry would virtually collapse.
That cannot be allowed to happen, of course, which is precisely why the
industry has a complete blackout on vitamin D information while pushing
hard for annual mammograms that continue to cause cancer (and generate
repeat business).
The U.S. government has abandoned science, too Kathleen
Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, has told women to
ignore the new mammography advice by the U.S. government task force.
But she has zero scientific evidence to back up her advice. She, like everyone else pushing mammograms, is engaged in pure quackery.
I
find this particularly fascinating, given that the cancer industry
claims people who are offering cancer cures are "quacks." Such cures
aren't based on rock-solid science, they claim! But when the rock-solid
science says mammograms are dangerous for women, the cancer industry abandons the science! That's why they are the new quacks.
Here's
a simple prediction: In twenty years, mammograms will have been long
since abandoned. Doctors of that era will look back at 2009 and wonder
how this so-called "modern" medical industry could have been so deeply
invested in such a dangerous, cancer-causing technology called
mammography. They will scratch their heads and ask, "Why didn't they
heed the science that said mammography is dangerous?" They'll write
about "how medically illiterate the people were in 2009" because they
voluntarily inserted their body parts into irradiation machines.
The
fact is that people of every era are suckers for apparent medical
authority. Patients tend to believe doctors because they mistakenly
think doctors know what they're talking about. But conventional doctors
are technicians, not healers. They understand the detailed of how to administer poisons, but they have no clue how to activate the body's innate healing potential.
Doctors
tend to be very intelligent individuals, but even they cannot
understand things they've never been taught, and medical school is
focused almost entirely on a drugs-and-surgery approach to medicine (slash and burn).
To expect a conventional doctor to be good at healing is like expecting your accountant to be good at ballet.
Doctors
may be smart, but they're ignorant about healing. And for the most
part, they're nutritionally illiterate, which is why cancer doctors
still don't recommend vitamin D. (Astonishing, but true.)
So why, then, would patients
who are interested in healing their bodies go see medical professionals
who are experts in the administration of poison? It makes no sense. But
that's what insurance covers, so they keep doing it. And they keep
dying of cancer, an almost entirely preventable disease with cures that
exist right now but will never be publicized because too much profit depends on keeping people sick.
Mammograms
are the insurance of the cancer industry. As long as mammogram machines
keep running, there will always be more cancer to diagnose -- because
the machines are making cancer!

How to Prevent and Cure the Flu Naturally without a Vaccine "If a doctor treats your flu, it will go away in fourteen days. If you
leave it alone, it will go away in two weeks," said Gloria Silverstein.
Drinking water, washing your hands, and getting enough sleep are
important, but the most effective thing you can do to prevent any sort
of flu is to boost your immune system. When your immune system is
functioning properly your risk of contracting the flu is severely
reduced.
Immune system boosters include green tea, garlic, green
vegetables, and regular exercise and avoid- or at least reduce- sugar,
dairy and meat products. Additionally adding vitamin D to your diet can
give you the extra boost your body needs to prevent the flu.
Part 1: Preventing the Flu with Vitamin D Vitamin
D deficiency is a widespread and common problem that causes chronic
conditions, debilitating diseases and, in some cases, death. Over one
million people die each year from vitamin D deficiency most likely due
to not getting enough sun exposure because of skin cancer fears. The
irony is that Vitamin D actually prevents cancer and other diseases
including the swine flu!
Doctors recommend taking Vitamin D
regularly to boost your immune system. "Vitamin D is produced in the
body during exposure to sunlight," says Dr. Oz, host of the Dr. Oz
Show. "During the winter we tend to get less exposure so vitamin D
supplements are recommended. People who take vitamin D supplements have
better luck avoiding the seasonal flu; there is no reason to think that
it won't do the same for H1N1 virus. Flu outbreaks tend to occur in
places where solar radiation is low."
Experts agree, "If you
take vitamin D, you don't need a vaccine!" says Mike Adams, editor of
Natural News. The swine flu vaccine is experimental and risky. With
vaccine side effects ranging from headaches to severe life-threatening
allergic reactions, take some Vitamin D please!
Part 2: Curing the Flu with Homeopathy Throughout
history, homeopathic remedies have been used to treat many different
strains of flu. Now many believe that homeopathy will treat this latest
H1N1 strain of swine flu. "Based on the symptoms, homeopathy can offer
an effective cure to swine flu," says Harcharanjeet Kaur, a homeopath
at Bakson's Homeopathy Clinic. "Moreover, it does not have any side
effects."
In 1918, homeopathic remedies were used to treat many
victims of the Spanish flu, which killed over 50 million people. 28% of
the people treated by western medicine died while only 1% of those
treated with homeopathy did. "Gelsemium and Bryonia were the two
homeopathic remedies that proved to be effective against the H1N1
strain back then," says Mukesh Batra, acclaimed homeopath in India.
"These could be of great use even today."
Homeopathic Doctors in
Mexico City studied the records from 1918 and determined the many
similarities between the two pandemics. They successfully treated
patients with swine flu in May of 2009.
This news comes at a
time when the government is rolling out the latest H1N1 swine flu
vaccine, touting the reasons to get the injection, and the media is
using its typical scare tactics to get people to line up for the shot-
which appears to be not only unnecessary, but also harmful. According
to the CDC, "A vaccine, like any medicine, could possibly cause serious
problems, such as severe allergic reactions."
Homeopaths agree
that the vaccine is not the cure that the media makes it out to be.
"The current vaccine against the seasonal influenza strain H1N1 is
highly unlikely to provide protection against this variant," says
homeopath Dr. Sulaikha Hamza. "In case preventive measures do not work
or you are already dealing with swine influenza, homeopathic remedies
can serve as an appropriate solution."

Pharmaceutical companies write their own drug information labels and leave out side effect information
Two doctors from the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice
recently reported that many prescription drug labels do not contain
accurate information about all side effects and the true severity of
listed side effects, and they fail to mention that certain medicines
are not truly effective.
A long standing problem, drug companies
are in charge of writing their own drug information which is then
presented to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for final approval.
Though tasked with negotiating accurate and sensible wording, the FDA often lets slide inadequate information that is both misleading and outright deceptive.
Lunesta,
a prescription sleeping drug created by Sepracor Inc., is touted on its
information label as being superior to placebo in alleviating insomnia
and inducing restful sleep. Test results from the most comprehensive
study performed on the drug revealed that the drug did not reduce
insomnia and that there were no meaningful improvements in next-day
functioning and alertness as drug advertisements claimed.
Even though the study's findings were provided to the FDA for further review, the FDA allowed misleading information to be published on Lunesta's information sheet anyway.
In response to allegations that the company is misleading the public
about Lunesta, Sepracor retorted that information above and beyond what
is required by the FDA is always available to those who request it.
Rozerem,
another insomnia drug produced by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., omitted
similar information from its drug information sheet. Though no
empirical sleeping improvements occurred in test patients
who received treatment with Rozerem, the company did not disclose this
fact on the product label. Takeda continues to market the product
untruthfully.
Other examples of drug label deception include
Novartis' Zometa bone cancer drug. The drug's information label states
that ingesting the 8-milligram dose poses a greater risk of kidney damage with no explanation about how great a risk. Truth be told, 33 percent of patients in a test study died when taking the 8-milligram dose of Zometa.
As
disturbing as all of this is, it illustrates the grave failure of the
FDA in performing its job. Drug companies seemingly run the show from
start to finish, researching, manufacturing, and self-regulating their
own products. The FDA time and time again has caved at the behest of
corporate pressure.
The FDA must be held responsible for its
utter failure to function as it should. In direct opposition to its own
mission statement which summates its purpose as defender of public health,
the FDA operates as a corporate lapdog to pharmaceutical interests. It
is time that the people demand the dismantling of this corrupt
organization and the formation of a new one.

EarthTronics Wind Turbine Generates Electricity Even in Low Wind Speeds
A Michigan company named EarthTronics has developed a small-scale wind
turbine that could be used to generate electricity at home in winds as
low as two miles per hour. The company is calling it "the highest
output, lowest cost per [kilowatt hour] installed turbine ever made."
Even
with growing interest in wind power worldwide, the U.S. market for home
wind turbines remains small, less than 0.002 percent of the national
market. According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA),
however, this small wind turbine market is expected to grow
dramatically over the next four years -- from a total of 80 installed
megawatts in 2008 to 1,700 megawatts in 2013. Already, installations in
2008 -- 17.3 megawatts -- marked a 78 percent increase over 2007.
Small wind turbines produce 100 kilowatts or less of power.
Contributing
to the trend is a provision in the federal stimulus bill, which limited
the former $4,000 cap on the 30 percent tax credit that consumers or
businesses could receive off of wind power installation costs.
Perhaps
more significant, however, are the new technologies making home-scale
wind turbines more practical, affordable and visually attractive.
Whether the new technologies will be enough to overcome resistance from
neighbors or the still substantial startup costs, however, remains to
be seen.
One of the primary challenges in producing home-scale
wind turbines has been figuring out a way to generate electricity from
low wind speeds. In urban and suburban settings, a high density of
nearby buildings and trees tends to block the higher wind speeds needed
by conventional turbines. According to EarthTronics, 90 percent of the
wind resources in North America are nine miles per hour or lower.
Shaped
like a giant wheel, the EarthTronics home wind turbine -- marketed as
the Honeywell Wind Turbine through a licensing agreement with Honeywell
-- is significantly lighter than a conventional turbine due to its
omission of a gearbox in the center.
Traditional turbines are
turned when the wind pushes against large blades around a central
gearbox, which in turn generates the electricity. Because the gearbox
is so heavy, however, large blades and high winds are required for it
to operate. In EarthTronics' Honeywell turbine, the gearbox has been
replaced by a much lighter "direct-drive generator" based on magnets.
This allows the turbine to generate electricity in winds anywhere
between two and 45 miles per hour. Also in contrast to other turbines
-- which must be mounted on the ground -- the Honeywell turbine can be
attached to a rooftop.
EarthTronics will begin selling the
Honeywell turbines in ACE hardware stores this fall. Each turbine
generates 2 kilowatts of power and sells for $4,500, with an additional
installation cost of up to $1,500. Even after installation costs, the
company says, the Honeywell turbine costs only one-third as much as a
traditional turbine.
The company estimates that a single turbine
can generate 2,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, depending on
climate and operating conditions.
The turbines have a six-foot
diameter and weigh 95 pounds. The company has begun a program to train
contractors and electricians in how to install the devices.
EarthTronics
is not the only company taking advantage of direct-drive generators to
jump on the home wind power bandwagon. According to the AWEA, a number
of other companies are also planning to introduce building-mounted wind
turbine systems, such as London-based Quiet Revolution. Private
companies such as Mariah Power and Wind Energy have also invested in
small-scale wind turbine technology, and Siemens has begun testing
turbines without gearboxes to see if they could be adapted for
larger-scale electric generation.
Perhaps hoping for similar benefits, operators of large-scale
wind farms are also among the investors in the EarthTronics Honeywell
turbine.

Traffic fumes may cause dementia
(Natural News)
A recent German study published in the journal Environmental Research
revealed a definitive link between prolonged inhalation of automobile
fumes and inflammation of the brain. An analysis of a group of women
found that those who lived closest to busy roads were the most likely
to develop memory problems and mild cognitive impairment, indicating
the potential onset of fume-induced dementia.
The group from Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf constructed models that measured air pollution
and the location of the womens' homes in proximity to roads that were
travelled by more than 10,000 cars in a day. Findings revealed that,
among women under age 74, those that lived the closest to the busy
roads performed the worst on cognition tests.
Since mild cognitive decline can indicate either a transition between normal aging and dementia, further research and follow-up with the women was emphasized. Alzheimer's disease is one of the most widely recognized forms of dementia and researchers continue to investigate its causes.
It is widely accepted that air pollution particles are so small that they are able to pass through the lungs and make their way into the brain.
As a result, the brain tissue becomes inflamed and cognitive decline
begins to occur. By crossing the blood-brain barrier and lodging
themselves in the brain, these particulates are the primary suspect in
causing cognitive dysfunction.
Toxic heavy metals such as aluminum
and mercury act similarly in that they build up in the body,
particularly in the brain, and cause serious problems. Antiperspirant
deodorants, baking sodas, food additives, and vaccines commonly contain aluminum derivatives that many claim are the perpetrators in causing brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease. Vaccines are also often loaded with mercury.
Industry
must also strive to develop cleaner forms of energy that cause less of
a negative impact upon people. Particularly with automobiles, clean
fuel technologies are of critical importance since vehicle exhaust is
known also to induce asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
One
would do best to live as far away from busy roads and polluted areas as
possible and to integrate an ongoing detoxification regime into his or
her lifestyle. By continually ridding the body of lodged toxins
with supplements such as chlorella, spirulina, and garlic, the
potential for excessive toxin buildup is virtually impossible. By
perpetually cleansing the body, it will be better able to fend off
harmful disease despite inevitable exposure to various toxins.
