Use Basil for Natural Remedies
Basil is not just for pesto anymore, but a plant of many health
benefits. Basil is a plant that looks similar to the peppermint plant,
as they both come from the same family. The leaves are tender and minty
green and grow to 30-130cm tall. Basil, a highly fragrant plant, is
best known as the ingredient in pesto using parmesan, pine nuts and
olive oil.
A few types of Basil - Sweet basil, the one used in Italian cooking - Thai Basil - Holy basil (tulsi) - Lemon basil - Anise basil - Cinnamon basil
Each
one of the types, has its own specific flavor and uses. Actually, there
are over 60 types of plants and each one offers its own unique smell
and taste. There are also, many types of basil in the Middle East,
which are used strictly for the smell and grown as ornamental plants.
Basil`s scientific name is Ocimum basilicum.
Health Benefits of the basil - Lowering blood pressure - Anti-spasmodic - Cholesterol lowering benefit - General detoxifier - Cleansing the blood - Lowering blood sugar levels - Anti-cancer - Anti-inflammatory - Anxiety relief - Can be used as an "adaptogen" - Anti-viral - Anti-microbial properties
Some Basil Natural Remedies (a few selected ones)
Abrasions Remedy: Use Basil extract directly on the skin and expect to see relief in three days.
Acidity Remedy: To get immediate relief you can chew on some of the leaves.
Amnesia Remedy: Take one teaspoon of the extract of basil, two times a day and expect to see relief in three months.
Body Rash Remedy: Apply the extract directly to the rash and expect to see relief in one week.
Chicken Pox Remedy: Take one teaspoon of basil extract, three times a day and expect to see relief in one week.
Common Fever Remedy:
Place four to five leaves in some boiling water and then add in 1/2 cup
of milk, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom. Sip
this tea slowly and expect to see relief in six hours.
Dizziness Remedy: Put three to four leaves in some boiling milk and drink this remedy. Expect to see relief from dizziness immediately.
Insomnia Remedy: Before sleeping, take one teaspoon of the basil extract and expect relief in one week
Joint Pains Remedy: Take one teaspoon of basil extract, three times a day and expect to see relief in one month.
Low Blood Pressure Remedy:
Crush 10-15 leaves and add them to one teaspoon of basil juice and then
mix with one teaspoon of honey. This remedy should be taken on an empty
stomach, first thing in the morning. You can expect to see relief from
low blood pressure in one month.
Ringworm Remedy: Use the extract directly on the skin, twice a day and expect to see relief in one month.
Tooth Discoloration Remedy:
Crush 10-15 leaves and the rind of one orange together. Use this
mixture as a tooth cleaner and expect to see results in one week.
Note: Basil has no known side effects and can be used in conjunction with most other remedies.
How to choose the right varieties and storage Fresh
basil is always the optimum choice over dried, as the fresh leaves are
the best in flavor. Look for basil that has vibrant looking leaves,
that are dark green. Make sure they do not have any brown marks or
yellowing spots. There are many varieties of both basil plants and the
dried spices. Always look for organic spices when possible and make
sure they have not been irradiated, which would decrease the vitamin C
and carotenoid content.
What does irradiate mean? The
process of irradiation in food, means the food is exposed to radiation.
The radiation is meant to destroy microorganisms, bacteria, viruses or
insects that could harm the products being consumed. This very harmful
process, also prevents sprouting and delays ripening further of the
produce. It is messing with Mother Nature, in other words. The
irradiation damages the DNA and stunts the growth of the food.
The
fresh basil should be stored in a paper towel, that has been sprayed
lightly with water and then stored inside a plastic bag in the
refrigerator. Basil may be chopped and placed in the freezer also, but
it looses much of its flavor and texture that way. The dried herbs need
to be placed in glass containers with tightly sealed lids and placed in
a dark cool place. Dried herbs may be kept for up to six months.
Left
over pesto, minus the parmesan cheese may be stored in ice cube trays.
To be used as needed. Add the parmesan once the pesto is defrosted. You
can also place fresh leaves in the ice cube trays and top with some
water, to be used later for soups or pesto.
Basil Pesto Recipe The typical recipe using basil is a simple pesto. It is very easy to make.
1. In a food processor add in one tablespoon of pine nuts and chop. 2. Add in two handfuls of fresh basil 3. Mix well. 4. Slowly add in 1/2 cup of olive oil and mixing very well. 5. Add in 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese and season with salt and black pepper. 6. Add some of the pasta water to the pesto as needed.
This can be used over some whole wheat spaghetti.

Home Births with Midwife Safe As Hospital for Babies, Fewer Infections and Less Bleeding for Moms
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has a
long-standing opposition to home births. In fact, their official
statement released last year actually accuses women who want a home
birth of placing "the process of giving birth over the goal of having a
healthy baby". The statement goes on to say "ACOG believes that the
safest setting for labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period
is in the hospital, or a birthing center within a hospital complex..."
While
ACOG may "believe" whatever that organization wants to, it would be
more professional for them to base their policy on science-based facts.
New research shows planned home births attended by registered midwives
is every bit as safe as a hospital birth for babies. What's more, it appears to be a whole lot safer for moms.
A study just published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal)
looked at 2889 home births attended by regulated midwives in British
Columbia, Canada, and 4752 planned hospital births attended by the same
cohort of midwives. Then Dr. Patricia Janssen from the University of
British Columbia and her research colleagues compared the outcomes with
5331 physician-attended births in hospital.
The results?
Newborns born at home where the home birth was planned and a registered
midwife was on hand were at similar or reduced risk of death than
babies born in a hospital. And the moms who gave birth at home had a
significantly lower risk of obstetric interventions and adverse
outcomes, including induced labor, electronic fetal monitoring,
epidural analgesia, assisted vaginal delivery, cesarean section, infections and bleeding.
"Women
planning birth at home experienced reduced risk for all obstetric
interventions measured, and similar or reduced risk for adverse
maternal outcomes," Dr. Patricia Janssen wrote in the CMAJ article.
The
authors of the study pointed out there may be factors in the home
environment that decrease risks to moms and babies but these factors
are not yet well-understood. For example, it could be that women with
healthy, natural lifestyles may be the ones who most likely choose home
births -- and may be most likely to have safe home births.
"We
do not underestimate the degree of self-selection that takes place in a
population of women choosing home birth. This self-selection may be an
important component of risk management for home birth," the researchers
stated. They also wrote in their research article that the fact
registered midwives screen women who want to have home births to make
sure it is the appropriate decision could contribute to the safety of
home births.
It's not only America's ACOG that opposes home births. The Australian and New Zealand
Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also are against babies
being born at home. However, the United Kingdom's Royal College of
Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Royal College of Midwives are
supportive, and so are midwife organizations in Canada, Australia and
New Zealand. Canada's Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has
encouraged research into the safety of home birth, and the new study is
part of that directive.
"Our population rate of less than one
perinatal death per 1000 births may serve as a benchmark to other
jurisdictions as they evaluate their home birth programs," the authors
concluded.

Silver in Tiny Doses Kills Bacteria, Helps Wounds Heal
In a recent presentation before the annual American Chemical Society
meeting held in Washington, D.C., scientist Ankit Agarwal revealed that
he's come up with an approach to healing that can kill 99.9999 percent
of bacteria in a wound using a natural substance -- silver. And he
claims he's found a way to help skin heal by using tiny, targeted
nanoparticles of the precious metal. The treatment could help save
diabetics from amputations and help victims of severe burns heal with
fewer complications from infections, too.
There's nothing new about the idea silver can be used as a healing tool. In fact, Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician known as the father of modern medicine,
wrote that silver has beneficial, anti-disease properties. And silver
is often used today to prevent wound dressings from becoming
contaminated with bacteria.
However, the huge loads normally used by Western medicine can damage
skin. That has made many doctors, especially those who treat burn
victims, shy away from using silver to treat wounds.
But
Agarwal, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, believes he's come up with a way to take advantage
of silver's anti-bacterial properties while at the same time avoiding
skin damage and actually promoting the healing of damaged skin. The
key? Extremely small doses delivered precisely.
Scientists have
long known that cells in the bodies of humans and other mammals are
sensitive to silver -- but bacteria are much more sensitive that cells.
So the key to killing bacteria without killing or harming skin cells is
to find the "sweet spot", a concentration of silver that kills
infection-causing bacteria but doesn't harm the skin cells needed for
healing. Agarwal appears to have done just that.
Combining 21st
century high tech engineering with the ancient natural healing powers
of silver, the researcher has created an ultra-thin material capable of
carrying extraordinarily small amounts of the precious metal. One
square inch of this material contains only a tiny amount -- about 0.4
percent -- of the silver found in the silver-treated antibacterial
bandages now used in medicine that can damage skin.
Agarwal's
approach is clearly an example of where less is more. In laboratory
tests, he demonstrated that the low concentration of silver killed
99.9999 percent of the bacteria but didn't damage cells called
fibroblasts that are needed to repair a wound. That means using
silver at this extremely low level can zap disease-causing pathogens
and actually help skin to heal at the same time.
This is important for several reasons. First, with the rise of superbugs (http://www.naturalnews.com/superbug...), it is gratifying to see that a natural substance is effective against potentially serious wound infections. Second, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions both in the US and around the world, and wound healing is a particular problem in diabetics. Poor blood supply in people with diabetes can cause healing problems that result in amputations and silver appears to be a promising tool to help diabetic
wounds heal. Another potentially life-changing application for the new
silver treatment: treating or preventing burn victims' skin infections
while allowing damaged skin to heal naturally.
Agarwal created
the experimental material by alternately dipping a glass plate in two
solutions of oppositely charged polymers and then adding a precise dose
of silver. The resulting multilayers form a kind of sandwich of
ultra-thin materials that stick together through electrical attraction.
The final size of the silver-laced treatment material ranges from a few
nanometers to several hundred nanometers in thickness (one nanometer is
one-billionth of a meter; a human hair is about 60,000 nanometers in
diameter.)
To kill bacteria, silver must take the form of
charged particles, or ions, and the commercial wound dressings now in
use contain a large dose of silver ions which are released quickly with
little control. But the tiny silver nanoparticles
that Agarwal embeds in his high tech silver sandwich material can be
designed to release ions for days or weeks as needed. "We are putting
the silver where we need it, so we can use a small loading of silver,
which does not exhibit toxicity to mammalian cells because the silver
is precisely targeted," Nicholas Abbott, a professor of chemical and
biological engineering who works with Agarwal, explained in the media
statement.

Nobel Prize-Winning Virologist's New Research Gives Significant Support to Homeopathic Pharmacology by Dana Ullman
Professor Luc Montagnier is a French virologist who co-discovered HIV and who won the Nobel Prize in 2008. Dr. Montagnier has received many other significant awards, though his newest research, which may explain how and why homeopathic medicines maintain their biological activity in extreme dilution, may be his most significant to date.
In a recent paper, Prof Montagnier, and his team report the results of a series of rigorous experiments investigating the electromagnetic (EM) properties of highly-diluted biological samples.
This new research is significant enough that the bio of Prof Montagnier on wikipedia already highlights it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luc_Montagnier#Electromagnetic_signals_from_bacterial_DNA
(however, predictably enough, this research is ignored in wikipedia's article on homeopathy).
The abstract of this research in part asserts, "A novel property of DNA is described: the capacity of some bacterial DNA sequences to induce electromagnetic waves at high aqueous dilutions. It appears to be a resonance phenomenon triggered by the ambient electromagnetic background of very low frequency waves."
Although homeopathy is not mentioned anywhere in the article, the researchers used aqueous solutions that were agitated and serially diluted (the researchers note that the solutions were "strongly agitated" and that this step was "critical for the generation of signals"). The researchers also note that they used a device made by French immunologist Jacques Benveniste (the famous physician/scientist who conducted studies testing homeopathic doses and whose work was initially published in NATURE, and then, it was "debunked" in that same journal a month later).
The researchers found that pathogenic bacteria and viruses show a distinct EM signature at dilutions ranging from 10(-5) to 10(-12) (corresponding to 5X to 12X) and that small DNA fragments (responsible for pathogenicity) were solely accountable for the EM signal.
The researchers also noted that one experiment found significant effects from dilutions as high as 10(-18) (equivalent to 18X). The EM signature changed with dilution levels but was unaffected by the initial concentration and remained even after the remaining DNA fragments were destroyed by chemical agents. Of additional interest was the researchers' observation that they observed the SAME results whether their initial concentration of cells were just 10 or 10(9)(this is 10 to the 9th power = 10,000,000,000 cells).
They observed that the EM signal was destroyed by heating or freezing the sample (a common observation that homeopaths have also found in their medicines). Also, a 'cross-talk' effect was found whereby a negative sample inhibits the positive signal in another sample if they are left together overnight in a shielded container. The researchers propose that specific aqueous nanostructures form in the samples during the dilution process and are responsible for the EM effects measured.
The researchers also detected the same electromagnetic signals in the plasma and in the DNA extracted from the plasma of patients suffering from Alzheimer, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The researchers also quote Italian physicist, E. Del Guidice, the same scientist who Benveniste cited, for positing that water molecules can form long polymers of dipoles associated by hydrogen bonds and that electromagnetic radiations that the emit enable them to avoid decay.
With this initial paper Prof Montagnier and his team have started a very promising line of enquiry, which has direct relevance to homeopathy as they continue to investigate the characteristic physico-chemical properties found in high-dilutions of biological material.

Chemo Does Not Cure: Often It Inflicts Damage and Spreads Cancer
For years now, many of us who advocate natural health and natural
approaches to beating cancer have warned against the dangers and the
ineffectiveness of chemotherapy. The following report presented at the
27th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium illustrates how chemo
actually spreads cancer cells, as well as points out how little we are
being told about the dangers of chemo:
"German investigators
from Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, have shown that taxol (the
"gold standard of chemo") causes a massive release of cells into
circulation.
"Such a release of cancer cells
would result in extensive metastasis months or even years later, long
after the chemo would be suspected as the cause of the spread of the cancer. This little known horror of conventional cancer treatment needs to be spread far and wide, but it is not even listed in the side effects of taxol."
As
has oft been stated, chemo does not cure cancer - it merely attempts to
eliminate the tumors and cancer cells that are symptoms of the
underlying causes of cancer,
and does so with little success and great risks. In some instances it
may appear to eliminate tumors and cancer cell masses, though most
often it merely destroys some of the cancer cells. In the process, it
often inflicts a very high price.
Besides spreading cancer cells, chemo inflicts serious and perhaps irreversible damage to the immune system,
the body's natural first line of defense against cancer and other
illness - thus paving the way for the remaining cancer cells or future
cancers to overwhelm a body that is even less able to beat the cancer
that got past the immune system in the first place.
Chemo also
frequently results in serious and even fatal damage, and major organs
are also damaged, particularly the liver - which as cancer pioneer Max
Gerson observed is always impaired to begin in those who get cancer.
The heart is also frequently seriously damaged.
The end result
is that chemo kills more patients than it "cures". Most of those deaths
are the result of liver or heart failure. Statistically, it has been
estimated that the five year success rate from chemo is only about 3%
(meaning only about 3% more patients who opted for chemo survived at
least five years than did those who opted to not undergo chemo). But
even that meager statistic is misleading in two key ways:
First
of all, though survival rates are slightly higher for the first couple
of years compared to those who opted out of chemo, after the third year
the survival rate for those who opted out is greater than those who
were treated with chemo and the gap widens significantly every year
after that.
Secondly, and perhaps most important of all, the survival rates compare all of those who either undergo chemotherapy
or decide against it. That includes the very large number of people who
do little or nothing to address their chemo and naturally and merely
forego chemo. If chemo survival rates were compared with those of
people who not only opted out of chemo, but also chose a non-invasive
natural protocol to eliminate the toxins and other causes of cancer, to
boost their immune systems and to attack the cancer naturally without
inflicting damage to the rest of the body, there would surely be no
comparison.
You can bet that it is a comparison the cancer industry never wants to make.
