Acupuncture on the Kenyan Coast
Aug 2009

In August, Abha Light founder Didi met up with Megan Yarberry, an acupuncturist visiting from Hawaii. Megan has been providing trainings in Kenya & Uganda since 2005, and in May 2008 she began working with The Omari Project (TOP), a non-profit organization working on drugs and HIV/AIDS on the Kenyan coast.  TOP's mission is to address drug addiction and prevent HIV transmission through rehabilitation services, public outreach and education, HIV testing, and counseling.

In May 2008 TOP staff received training in the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol, a simple auricular acupuncture treatment that was originally used in rehabilitation from drug addiction, but which has now proven effective for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and to promote general well-being.

Since the training, TOP clients can access the NADA protocol during recovery, and members of the public have also benefitted from this treatment.  Staff reports that clients are much calmer after treatment sessions, and the nurse says that the need for medications to support withdrawal has been cut in half.  During a recent training session with similar organizations in Kenya facilitated by the UNODC, TOP was recognized for its high retention rates (one of the best gauges of success for this type of program) and the number of clients who are able to maintain sobriety over time.  "We'll need another year for further study, but acupuncture is the only tool that we have added to explain the improvements we've noted over the past year." says Shosi Mohammed, a TOP administrator.
Influenza-1918: Homeopathy to the Rescue
by Julian Winston

The New England Journal of Homeopathy
Spring/Summer 1998, Vol.7 No.1
The following is an extract of the chapter on the influenza epidemic of 1918 from Julian Winston's history of homeopathy book.

It was called "the Great White Plague." It is hard to imagine the devastation caused by the Flu Epidemic of 1918-19. People who lived through it reported that some one who was up and well in the morning could be dead by evening.

Dr. H. A. Roberts was a physician on a troop ship at the time. Another boat pulled alongside to get any spare coffins- it's mortality rate was so high. On his return to port, the commander said to Roberts, "used all your coffins?" To which Roberts, who had been treating his ship with homeopathy, replied, "Yes, and lost not one man!"

The following is an extract from an article entitled "Homeopathy In Influenza- A Chorus Of Fifty In Harmony" by W. A. Dewey, MD that appeared in the Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy in 1920.

Dean W. A. Pearson of Philadelphia collected 26,795 cases of influenza treated by homeopathic physicians with a mortality of 1.05%, while the average old school mortality is 30%.

Thirty physicians in Connecticut responded to my request for data. They reported 6,602 cases with 55 deaths, which is less than 1%. In the transport service I had 81 cases on the way over. All recovered and were landed. Every man received homeopathic treatment. One ship lost 31 on the way. H. A. Roberts, MD, Derby, Connecticut.

In a plant of 8,000 workers we had only one death. The patients were not drugged to death. Gelsemium was practically the only remedy used. We used no aspirin and no vaccines. -Frank Wieland, MD, Chicago.

I did not lose a single case of influenza; my death rate in the pneumonias was 2.1%. The salycilates, including aspirin and quinine, were almost the sole standbys of the old school and it was a common thing to hear them speaking of losing 60% of their pneumonias.-Dudley A. Williams, MD, Providence, Rhode Island.

Fifteen hundred cases were reported at the Homeopathic Medical Society of the District of Columbia with but fifteen deaths. Recoveries in the National Homeopathic Hospital were 100%.-E. F. Sappington, M. D., Philadelphia.

I have treated 1,000 cases of influenza. I have the records to show my work. I have no losses. Please give all credit to homeopathy and none to the Scotch-Irish-American! -T. A. McCann, MD, Dayton, Ohio.

One physician in a Pittsburgh hospital asked a nurse if she knew anything better than what he was doing, because he was losing many cases. "Yes, Doctor, stop aspirin and go down to a homeopathic pharmacy, and get homeopathic remedies." The Doctor replied: "But that is homeopathy." "I know it, but the homeopathic doctors for whom I have nursed have not lost a
single case." -W. F. Edmundson, MD, Pittsburgh.

There is one drug which directly or indirectly was the cause of the loss of more lives than was influenza itself. You all know that drug. It claims to be salicylic acid. Aspirin's history has been printed. Today you don't know what the sedative action of salicylic acid is. It did harm in two ways. It's indirect action came through the fact that aspirin was taken until prostration resulted and the patient developed pneumonia. -Frank L. Newton, MD, Somerville, Massachusetts
Aspirin and the other coal tar products are condemned as causing great numbers of unnecessary deaths. The omnipresent aspirin is the most pernicious drug of all. It beguiles by its quick action of relief of pain, a relief which is but meretricious. In several cases aspirin weakened the heart, depressed the vital forces, increased the mortality in mild cases and made convalescence slower. In all cases it masks the symptoms and renders immeasurably more difficult the selection of the curative remedy. Apparently aspirin bears no curative relation to any disease and it ought to be prohibited. -Guy Beckly Stearns, MD, New York

Three hundred and fifty cases and lost one, a neglected pneumonia that came to me after she had taken one hundred grains of aspirin in twenty-four hours. -Cora Smith King, MD, Washington, DC

I had a package handed to me containing 1,000 aspirin tablets, which was 994 too many. I think I gave about a half dozen. I could find no place for it. My remedies were few. I almost invariably gave Gelsemium and Bryonia. I hardly ever lost a case if I got there first, unless the patient had been sent to a drug store and bought aspirin, in which event I was likely to have a case of pneumonia on my hands. -J. P. Huff, MD, Olive Branch, Kentucky.

In reading the accounts of the epidemic it seems that most of the deaths were caused by a virulent pneumonia that was especially devastating to those who depressed their system with analgesics-the most common being aspirin.

The Physician from whom I first learned homeopathy, Raymond Seidel, MD, HMD, said that he decided to be a homeopathic doctor during the flu epidemic when he was working as a delivery boy for a homeopath in New Jersey. Raymond Seidel told me that he decided to become a homeopathic doctor when he was a ten-year old delivery boy for a local homeopath. He said, "I saw that the people who were taking aspirin were dying, about half those who were drinking a lot were dying, and those that received homeopathic remedies were living."

How to Use Paraffin Therapy at Home for Drug Free Pain Relief
by Lynn Pritchit
http://www.associatedcontent.com...
[NOTE: Paraffin mentioned here means "wax" as in the type used in making candles. It doesn't mean "liquid paraffin" that's in supermarkets or "kerosine". Wax in large quantities can be sourced directly from candle making factories]

Treating Chronic and Temporary Pain Conditions Yourself Without Drugs
Pain relief does not always need to come from prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs or homeopathic orally ingested preparations. Accidental overdoses and allergic reactions are deadly possibilities with each of those options.

Get Doctor's Approval for Paraffin (Wax) Therapy for Pain Relief
Paraffin (wax) therapy temporarily relieves pain associated with many conditions. It is often recommended by orthopedists, rheumatologists, and physical therapists to aid in pain relief and improving blood circulation in certain conditions.  Paraffin therapy should only be used with approval and recommendation of a medical specialist who is familiar with the particular medical issue and patient. Some health insurance benefits may help with costs, so check coverage options before paying.

If a medical professional recommends paraffin therapy for a patient's condition, such as for certain types of arthritis, and related illnesses, sports injuries older than 36 hours, and other specific diagnoses, it is important to use paraffin therapy properly to get the full benefit.

Steps to Use Paraffin Bath
Thoroughly wash and dry the hand or foot that is to be immersed, to keep the paraffin clean as possible for re-use and less waste.
  1. Rub a thin layer of unscented moisturizing lotion on the area, to make the paraffin easier to remove from the skin and maintain the skin's moisture during the paraffin heat therapy.
  2. Slowly dip hand or foot into the paraffin, immersing it completely to cover the painful area.
  3. Keep the fingers or toes as still as possible, so the paraffin can conform properly to the skin.
  4. Slowly lift hand or foot from the paraffin, counting to 4 or 5 so the paraffin layer can set and wax stops dripping.
  5. Continue dipping hand or foot until a thick glove of wax forms, about 5 to 8 times. The more layers are dipped the longer the heat will be maintained.
  6. Carefully put waxed hand or foot into the plastic bag, laying bag closed around wrist or ankle.
  7. Wrap towel around plastic bag, or put hand in a paraffin mitt, to hold the heat in.
  8. Keep wax on for 15 to 20 minutes, or until it cools.
  9. Remove towel (paraffin mitt) and plastic bag.
  10. Peel off wax and return it to the paraffin container.

For facial, knee, elbow use, a clean paint brush can be used to apply layers of paraffin to the painful headache or joint area.

Paraffin Recycling and Reusing
When paraffin is used at a spa or physical therapy center, the wax must be disposed of for health code purposes. In home use, the user may choose to re-use the paraffin, especially if the person keeps a habit of washing the paraffin-dipped body part beforehand to help keep extraneous matter out of the paraffin.

After about 40 uses, the paraffin wax should be allowed to harden and the dry skin that has fallen to the bottom of the container can be scraped off the hardened wax. The clean remaining wax can be re-melted to 125 degrees Fahrenheit and paraffin added one pound at a time, along with 1/3 cup of mineral oil, food-grade almond oil, or Sicilian extra-virgin olive oil to replace the scraped-off wax.

Paraffin Baths: To Make One, Buy One, or Get Treatments by Appointment
When using a paraffin bath for pain therapy, it is most beneficial to have one at home. When the pain hits, it is ready to use day or night. Unlike a pill, it can be used anytime, and the bath belongs to you whether you made it or bought it.

If you rely on a beauty spa or a physical therapy center for paraffin treatments, the cost never ends. Each visit is another fee. Plus the treatment cannot happen spontaneously with your pain needs.
Using Borax around the Home
By Green Living Tips
http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/115/1/Handy-borax-tips.html

[In Kenya, borax is available through school&lab supplies]

I always thought borax to be an extremely toxic man-made chemical, best avoided - but it turns out it's a naturally occurring substance with many uses. It's cheap and relatively environmentally friendly when handled with the proper care (i.e. don't eat the stuff and keep out of reach of pets and children) and used minimally.

Borax, also known as sodium borate or sodium tetraborate, occurs naturally and is mined in the Mojave Desert (Boron, California), other US states, in Chile and Tibet. It can also be created synthetically from other boron compounds. The mining side of borax production isn't all that earth friendly, but compared to some other chemical compounds used around the home, it's likely lesser of the many other evils, so it's a "greener" choice.

Borax used in all sorts of products - pesticides, insulation, makeup, detergents and other cleaners. In our house we have recycled cellulose fiber for roof insulation that's been treated with Borax in order to make it flame retardant. The other side effect of this treatment is that it discourages vermin from nesting and kills insects.

Handy Borax tips
Warning - as mentioned in the start of this article; it's *relatively* safe to use. Given it's insecticidal properties, that indicates that it does have some level of toxicity and should therefore be treated with care. Ingesting Borax is certainly not recommended, although in some countries it's used in foods in small quantities as a replacement for salt. Given that it does have some toxic properties, I was very surprised to find it used as a food additive and in makeup. It's always advisable to wear gloves when handling borax as it can cause skin irritation for some people. Borax should also not be inhaled.

Insecticide
[from Didi: I've used this and it works! And its cheaper than store-bought products]
- Sprinkle borax powder around your refrigerator and stove as a cockroach deterrant.
- A mixture of borax and sugar or honey will attract and kill silverfish and ants

Urine smells and stains
- Half a cup of borax in with your wash to rid clothing/bedding of urine smells and stains
- Dampen urine stains on mattresses, carpets etc with a little water; sprinkle borax on, allow to dry then brush or vaccuum up
- Remove urine smells from diaper buckets by adding warm water and a quarter of a cup of borax
- A quarter cup of borax in your toilet, let sit, then brush around toilet bowl sides. This will also help deodorize the toilet brush

General washing
- For pre-soaking, one tablespoon of Borax per gallon of water. Allow to soak for 30 minutes
- Safe to use on colors, add half a cup of borax for a brighter wash and to boost your washing detergent's cleaning power

General deodorizer
- Dissolve 1 tablespoon of Borax in a quart of warm water and use as a refrigerator wipe/deodorizer.

Mold and mildew
- For outdoor furniture and bathroom tiles, mix a teaspoon earth friendly dishwashing liquid and one teaspoon borax with one quart warm water. Pour in a spray bottle, spray on furniture/tiles, allow to sit, rinse and then air dry.

Cookware
-  Sprinkle Borax on pots and pans and rub with a damp sponge or cloth to remove stains and buildup - using Borax in this way will not scratch your cookware
Floors
- In a half bucket of warm water add a third of a cup of Borax and a teaspoon of earth friendly dishwashing detergent
Ten Things You're Not Supposed to Know about the Swine Flu Vaccine
(NaturalNews)
She was deathly afraid of the flu.
So she asked her doc what she should do.
He jabbed her unseen
With a swine flu vaccine
Blurting, "Darling, I haven't a clue."
- by the Health Ranger

Let's not beat around the bush on this issue: The swine flu vaccines now being prepared for mass injection into infants, children, teens and adults have never been tested and won't be tested before the injections begin. In Europe, where flu vaccines are typically tested on hundreds (or thousands) of people before being unleashed on the masses, the European Medicines Agency is allowing companies to skip the testing process entirely.

And yet, amazingly, people are lining up to take the vaccine, absent any safety testing whatsoever. When the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. announced a swine flu vaccine trial beginning in early August, it was inundated with phone calls and emails from people desperate to play the role of human guinea pigs. The power of fear to herd sheeple into vaccine injections is simply amazing...

Back in Europe, of course, everybody gets to be a guinea pig since no testing will be done on the vaccine at all. Even worse, the European vaccines will be using adjuvants -- chemicals used to multiply the potency of the active ingredients in vaccines.

Notably, there is absolutely no safety data on the use of adjuvants in infants and expectant mothers -- the two groups being most aggressively targeted by the swine flu vaccine pushers. The leads us to the disturbing conclusion that the swine flu vaccine could be a modern medical disaster. It's untested and un-tried. Its ingredients are potentially quite dangerous, and the adjuvants being used in the European vaccines are suspected of causing neurological disorders.

Paralyzed by vaccines
I probably don't need to remind you that in 1976, a failed swine flu vaccine caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people, paralyzing many. Medical doctors gave the problem a name, of course, to make it sound like they knew what they were talking about: Guillain-Barre syndrome. (Notably, they never called it "Toxic Vaccine Syndrome" because that would be too informative.)

But the fact remains that doctors never knew how the vaccines caused these severe problems, and if the same event played out today, all the doctors and vaccine pushers would undoubtedly deny any link between the vaccines and paralysis altogether. (That's what's happening today with the debate over vaccines and autism: Complete denial.)

In fact, there are a whole lot of things you'll never be told by health authorities about the upcoming swine flu vaccine. For your amusement, I've written down the ten most obvious ones and published them below.

Ten things you're not supposed to know about the swine flu vaccine
(At least, not by anyone in authority...)

#1 - The vaccine production was "rushed" and the vaccine has never been tested on humans. Do you like to play guinea pig for Big Pharma? If so, line up for your swine flu vaccine this fall...

#2 - Swine flu vaccines contain dangerous adjuvants that cause an inflammatory response in the body. This is why they are suspected of causing autism and other neurological disorders.

#3 - The swine flu vaccine could actually increase your risk of death from swine flu by altering (or suppressing) your immune system response. There is zero evidence that even seasonal flu shots offer any meaningful protection for people who take the jabs. Vaccines are the snake oil of modern medicine.

#4 - Doctors still don't know why the 1976 swine flu vaccines paralyzed so many people. And that means they really have no clue whether the upcoming vaccine might cause the same devastating side effects. (And they're not testing it, either...)

#5 - Even if the swine flu vaccine kills you, the drug companies aren't responsible. The U.S. government has granted drug companies complete immunity against vaccine product liability. Thanks to that blanket immunity, drug companies have no incentive to make safe vaccines, because they only get paid based on quantity, not safety (zero liability).

#6 - No swine flu vaccine works as well as vitamin D to protect you from influenza. That's an inconvenient scientific fact that the U.S. government, the FDA and Big Pharma hope the people never realize.

#7 - Even if the swine flu vaccine actually works, mathematically speaking if everyone else around you gets the vaccine, you don't need one! (Because it can't spread through the population you hang with.) So even if you believe in the vaccine, all you need to do is encourage your friends to go get vaccinated...

#8 - Drug companies are making billions of dollars from the production of swine flu vaccines. That money comes out of your pocket -- even if you don't get the jab -- because it's all paid by the taxpayers.

#9 - When people start dying in larger numbers from the swine flu, rest assured that many of them will be the very people who got the swine flu vaccine. Doctors will explain this away with their typical Big Pharma logic: "The number saved is far greater than the number lost." Of course, the number "saved" is entirely fictional... imaginary... and exists only in their own warped heads.

#10 - The swine flu vaccine centers that will crop up all over the world in the coming months aren't completely useless: They will provide an easy way to identify large groups of really stupid people. (Too bad there isn't some sort of blue dye that we could tag 'em with for future reference...)

The lottery, they say, is a tax on people who can't do math. Similarly, flu vaccines are a tax on people who don't understand health.

Letter Sparks Investigation of Baxter Vaccine by New Zealand Minister of Health

(NaturalNews) The New Zealand Minister of Health, Hon Tony Ryall, has asked the Ministry of Health officials to urgently advise him on issues raised about a "swine flu" vaccine produced by Baxter International Inc. This follows his receipt of a letter raising concerns about whether vaccines produced by Baxter for "swine flu" can be trusted.

In an open letter to all members of the New Zealand House of Parliament, Penny Bright, Media Spokesperson for Water Pressure Group, a judicially recognized Public Watchdog for Metrowater, water and Auckland regional governance matters, raises a series of questions and concerns about the safety of the vaccine. She demands to know whether Baxter products are currently being used in New Zealand for the "swine flu", "bird flu" or any other type of flu.

Bright highlights the fact that Baxter is currently facing criminal charges for producing contaminated "bird flu" vaccine that date back to February of this year when it became known that the company had sent out 72 kilos of live "bird flu" virus supplied by the World Health Organization in the winter of 2009 to 16 laboratories in four countries. These charges were filed by journalist Jane Burgermeister of Austria and were exclusively reported by Natural News http://www.naturalnews.com/026503_p...

Burmeister's allegations claim that clear evidence exists that the pharmaceutical company and international government agencies actively conspired in producing, developing, manufacturing and distributing biological agents classified as the most deadly bioweapons on earth in order to trigger a pandemic and cause mass death.

Last December, the Austrian branch of Baxter sent a batch of ordinary human H3N2 flu, altered so it could not replicate, to Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, also in Austria. In February, a lab in the Czech Republic working for Avir alerted Baxter that, unexpectedly, ferrets inoculated with a sample from the shipment had died. It was discovered that the sample contained live H5N1, which was to be used by Baxter to make vaccine. Baxter claims the two mixed by error, and called the incident a simple "accident".

According to an article appearing in The Times of India on March 6, Markus Reinhard of Baxter said no one was infected because the H3N2 was handled at a high level of containment. But world renowned virologist Ab Osterhause of Erasmus University in the Netherlands has stated emphatically that great lengths must be taken to make sure this kind of thing does not happen again. In May, Osterhaus told participants at Europe's largest conference on infectious diseases that the outbreak of influenza A H1N1 is without question the most important event of the past 40 years in human influenza. He stressed that the current H1N1 threat is serious.

Accidental release of the mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 virus subtypes could have resulted in extremely dire consequences. Although H5N1 does not easily infect people, H3N2 does. Anyone exposed to a mixture of the two strains and simultaneously infected with both could serve as a human incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to other people and their communities. This is the outcome feared by many scientists in the U.S. for the fall flu season, and the stated reason for the push to get everyone vaccinated, even if by force.

In her open letter, Bright asks members of the New Zealand Parliament to consider whether they would consent to being injected with a "swine flu" vaccine produced by Baxter while it is under investigation for charges it produced contaminated "bird flu" vaccine. She asks Parliament members if they would consent to having their own children and grandchildren vaccinated with Baxter's product which is slated to appear on the market this month.

She also asks them to consider a situation in which their consent to vaccination or lack thereof was overridden under emergency legislation arising from the New Zealand Epidemic Preparedness Act 2006, and to consider their response to mandatory or forced vaccination.

Under the Epidemic Preparedness Act 2006, broad powers are granted to the Medical Officer of Health in response to the threat or emergence of a new epidemic. These powers include the ability to require a person to undergo a medical examination (section 70(1)(e)); require persons, places, buildings, ships, vehicles, aircraft, animals, or things to be isolated, quarantined, or disinfected (section 70(1)(f)); require people to remain in quarantine until they have been medically examined and found to be free from infectious disease, and until they have undergone any prescribed preventive treatment (section 70(1)(h); close any premise (section 70(1)(la) or all premises within a certain area (section 70(1)(m)(i)-(ii); forbid people to congregate in outdoor places of amusement or recreations, whether public or private (section 70(1)(m)(iii)-(iv); and take possession of personal property including land, buildings, vehicles, medicines, and other things, and for purposes including the accommodation or treatment of patients, disposal of bodies, transportation of patients, medical personnel, medicine etcetera (section 71(1)).

These powers are automatically engaged when an epidemic notice is issued, much like the set up in the U.S. which allows for similar powers to automatically come into effect with the declaration of Pandemic Level 6. A Pandemic Level 6 alert was declared on June, 11th.

The powers of the Medical Officer of Health include ordering the removal of any person to a hospital for isolation if he or she has reason to believe or suspect that the person, whether suffering from an infectious disease or not, is likely to cause the spread of any infectious disease (section 79).
