Find Natural Relief for Colic
There's nothing more precious than a new baby. Nine months pass so
quickly, as you excitedly look forward to the day when you are finally
holding that sweet little bundle in your arms. In the first few months
of life, your baby communicates by crying to let you know when he has a
need such as being hungry, needing a diaper change, feeling scared,
lonely, cold, sick or bored. There may be times when you take care of
every possible need, and your baby continues to cry. You feel helpless
as you frantically phone your pediatrician. Normally after examining
your baby, the doctor tells you that your baby has a case of colic. (Of
course, if there is ever a doubt about the health of your baby, please
contact your pediatrician.)
Although not all babies experience
colic, only about one in five, some babies develop a strong case of it
around three weeks old. Colic is described as pain in the abdomen
resulting from trapped gas in the digestive tract of your little one.
Usually the result is excessive crying. A case of colic may continue
off and on until your baby reaches about four months. Signs include
loud crying, clenched hands, flexing arms and legs that are drawn up
tightly against his abdomen. His little tummy may seem hard and he may
suffer from a large amount of gas. It's horrible to watch this little
helpless person cry out in pain.
While there is no perfect cure
for colic, some parents have found temporary relief for their baby,
using these natural health approaches. Swaddle your baby by wrapping
him snugly in a warm blanket. Support him with his tummy up against the
inside of your forearm with his back against your side. The slight
pressure against his mid-section may help. If your baby takes a
pacifier, be sure you have one handy especially during his colicky
moments. Are you a nursing mother? If so, be careful of the food you
eat. Spicy or gassy foods may add to his colicky symptoms. Your diet
affects the milk you produce. Be sure to burp your baby well after he
eats. This will help to expel unwanted air from his tummy. Keep your
little one away from drafts or wind. Sooth him with gentle soft music.
Try adding a tiny drop of pure peppermint extract to a teaspoon of
water. Slowly spoon this warm mixture into the baby's mouth. A small
amount of weak Chamomile tea water may also help to calm your baby's
tummy trouble. (Be sure not to add sugar or honey as a baby's digestive
system is not ready to digest these items.) Placing your baby in a warm
bath and sponging warm water over his tummy area may also be of benefit.
Remaining
calm and being willing to try out different techniques for relieving
your baby's colic, will allow you to bond with your little one in a
special way. Remember you are his world and he needs you. His colic
won't last forever and one day soon, that sad little face will reward
you with a beautiful little smile.

Permanent Posture Change is the Key to Freedom from Chronic Pain
Chronic musculoskeletal pain indiscriminately affects millions of
people and has now become a problem of epidemic proportions. Globally
people are suffering and searching for answers, but neither
conventional nor alternative medicine seems to offer a definitive
solution to resolving it. But relief from chronic pain can be
accomplished by getting and maintaining good posture.
There are many studies that have demonstrated this truth. Following are just a few of them:
- In 2008 The American Pain Foundation reported that at some point in their lives 80% of all people living in North America and Europe will suffer from disabling chronic foot, knee, hip, back or neck pain. In fact, in the United States alone, pain affects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined.
- A U.S. National Pain Foundation survey showed that from 1996 to 2006 there was a rise of 38% in chronic pain cases among the U.S. full-time work force.
- The European Journal of Pain
conducted a large cross-sectional survey of 46,000 subjects in 15
European countries and Israel in 2006 and found similar facts to those
in the United States. Nineteen percent of survey respondents had
chronic pain (an intensity of pain 5 or greater on a 10-point scale).
Twenty-six percent of chronic pain patients reported an impact on their
employment, and of those, 19% had lost their jobs.
- The Jerusalem Post
headline reported that one in six Israeli adults suffer from chronic
pain. Nearly a third of those say that there are days when it is so
strong they wish they were dead.
- Drugs are used by
millions of chronic pain sufferers across the globe. They are spending
billions just to manage their pain. In America alone, billions of
dollars are spent each year for over-the-counter pain medications. In 2005, 20 billion dollars were spent on prescription medication for chronic back pain. In the UK, 3.8 billion pounds are spent each year just to treat chronic pain in teenagers.
- Studies show that long term use of over-the-counter medications such as
aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and ketoprofen can lead to
gastrointestinal complications such as ulcers, gastrointestinal
bleeding or perforation of the stomach.
What do these statistics tell us?
- We are in the midst of a worldwide epidemic of chronic musculoskeletal pain.
- Pain medication is costing pain sufferers billions and is not only not
helping to resolve the problem, but often making the situation worse.
- Current and conventional treatments for chronic musculoskeletal pain are not working.
- We need a solution.
The
problem with many current treatments and therapies for chronic
musculoskeletal pain is that they do not address the source of the
pain. As with anything in life, without addressing the source of a
problem, it is impossible to find a real and permanent solution.
Now there are types of pain where the source is known, and hence there are treatments to eliminate it. Examples of this are back pain
from a severe fracture in a vertebrae, for which surgery can be used to
fix the fracture and eliminate the pain, or back pain from a bladder
infection, which can be remedied with antibiotics. However these types
of pain are not chronic, as they exist for a finite period of time
(until the treatment has successfully dealt with the pain).
But
there are many cases where the source of pain is not known and pain
sufferers have been told that their only option is to manage their
pain. This pain is ongoing and hence is considered chronic. Current
treatments for chronic musculoskeletal pain may effectively manage
symptoms temporarily, but because the source of the pain is not being
addressed, the pain inevitably returns.
Fortunately a
previously unknown source of chronic musculoskeletal pain now has been
discovered. This discovery may surprise you. The key to how to
eliminate your chronic musculoskeletal pain is in your feet. Your feet,
you ask? Let me explain.
There exists a neural-mechanical
pathway which connects the bottom of your feet to your brain. This
pathway is used to send information to the brain.
This information tells the brain the position of the body relative to
its surroundings. This pathway is part of a system we refer to as
proprioception.
There are two different foot structures that
can be present at birth which force the foot to move (twist) abnormally
when you walk. This foot twist sends distorted information along this
pathway to the brain. Acting on this distorted information, the brain
makes changes in the position of the body which results in bad posture.
Bad posture can present in different ways, but often people with bad
posture have rounded shoulders or their head position is not aligned
with their spine (more forward). Bad posture leads to increased stress
and strain on the joints and muscles. In time, this leads to
inflammation and the development of pain.
Hence the key to
returning to wellness and eliminating your chronic pain is to correct
the distorted information generated from a twisting foot. This is
accomplished by placing stimuli underneath the feet. These stimuli send
a message to the brain. The brain, acting on this information from the
feet, automatically improves the body`s posture. When the posture is
improved, the muscles and joints are now in a position where the
pressure and strain is considerably reduced. The result is
instantaneous relief of pain.
We see that some current
therapies have tried to address bad posture, such as chiropractic
treatments or physiotherapy. But because those solutions only adjust
the body`s position temporarily - at some point after the body returns
to it`s original bad posture - inevitably the pain always returns.
As
simple as it sounds, relief from chronic pain is accomplished by
getting and maintaining good posture. Remember your grandmother telling
you to sit and stand up straight? She was right on the mark!

Natural Remedies for Mouth Ulcers
Anyone who suffers from mouth ulcers knows how painful and irritating
they can be. In severe cases multiple ulcers may appear and the
discomfort can make talking and eating difficult. But what causes these
little sores? And how can you get rid of them naturally?
An
ulcer is an open sore that appears in the soft tissue of the mouth.
There can be many reasons why ulcers may appear such as prescription
drugs and infectious diseases such as thrush or herpes. But poor oral
hygiene, accidental biting of the lip, tongue or cheek and constant
rubbing against sharp misaligned teeth or braces are the main causes
behind the annoying little sores. There are those who regularly get
multiple mouth ulcers
for no specific reason at all. In fact it is thought that around 20% of
the American population suffers from what are known as aphthous ulcers.
This type of ulcer may appear during times of stress or trauma and in
some cases may be due to a vitamin and mineral deficiency.
Home Remedies If
your ulcers are mainly due to a poor diet there are some simple steps
that you can take to prevent them. Eat more fruit and veggies and foods
that are rich in vitamin B as these are thought to work wonders. Avoid
eating hot and spicy foods as these can irritate your mouth and make
you more prone to ulcers.
Coconut oil is fast becoming known as
a great home remedy for a number of things including curing mouth
ulcers. Coconut oil has been used in many so called primitive societies
for centuries as one of their main healing tools. Sore throats, skin infections, dysentery, fevers and flu were all treated with coconut oil.
But it is the modern day trials and studies that have shown that
coconut oil kills certain types of bacteria that make it a great home
remedy for mouth ulcers. Simply rub some of the oil directly on to your
ulcers twice a day and you should notice a massive difference.
There
is several different mouth washes that you can make up that are thought
to kill the ulcer causing bacteria. Try mixing a little tee tree oil in
some hot water and gargle with it twice a day, but make sure you never
swallow the mixture as tee tree can be poisonous. You can also rub salt
or baking soda directly on to the wounds, these are thought to ease the
pain and discomfort as well as help shorten the recovery time.
As
with most mouth infections the best way to combat mouth ulcers is
through basic oral hygiene. Make sure you brush and floss your teeth
twice a day and give it a rinse with a mouth wash before bed. These are
simple steps that could save you a lot of pain.

400 Medicinal Plants on Verge of Extinction Warn Researchers
Botanic Gardens Conservation International has warned that 400
medicinal plants around the world are at risk of extinction if current
over-harvesting and deforestation practices continue.
The
organization, which has member gardens in 120 different countries,
surveyed more than 600 members and university experts to compile a list
of threatened medicinal plants.
Among the most threatened are
magnolias, with half of the world's species at risk due to
deforestation. Magnolia has a 5,000-year history as a traditional
Chinese medicine for cancer, dementia and heart disease.
Also
at risk is the yew tree, source of the popular cancer drug paclitaxel,
which is synthesized from the tree's bark. But the bark from six trees
must be used to create a single dose, placing the yew at risk of
over-harvesting. The medicinal properties of hoodia, a Namibian native,
have also placed it at risk of over-harvest, with large quantities
being "ripped from the wild," according to the report. Because the
plant suppresses appetite, drug companies in search of miracle
weight-loss medications are harvesting more than the species can bear.
In
contrast, autumn crocus is being over-harvested mostly due to its
ornamental appeal. But the plant is also a highly effective treatment
for gout, and is being investigated for its leukemia-fighting abilities.
More than 50 percent of prescription drugs use chemicals originally derived from plants.
Even
though many of the medicinal chemicals found in the 400 threatened
plants can be synthesized in the laboratory, that does not mean the
original plants no longer have medical benefit, the report emphasized.
The vast majority of the five billion people on Earth still rely on
traditional, plant-based medicine as their primary form of medical care.
"It
is not an overstatement to say that if the precipitous decline of these
species is not halted, it could destabilize the future of global
healthcare," said report author Belinda Hawkins.

Could this folk remedy really work?
For centuries, Chinese Medicine and Western folk medicine have used extracts from red clover as a diuretic, cough expectorant, and remedy for skin conditions like psoriasis.
Now modern medicine claims that it can help reduce the symptoms of the menopause and ease prostate problems.... and even fight cancer.
The reason is that red clover contains isoflavones.
These are chemicals which act like weak oestrogens. This blocks some of the bad effects of naturally-occurring oestrogen, which can cause breast, prostate and colon cancer.
One of the isoflavones, known as 'geneistin' can revert breast and prostate cancer cells back to their pre-cancerous states. It can also delay the growth of new blood vessels in tumours.
This may explain why the prostate cancer rates in Asia are lower than in the west. They eat a lot of isoflavone-rich foods like red clover, soya, lentils, chickpeas and beans.
Red clover can also help reduce the symptoms of the menopause, such as night sweats and hot flushes. In Japan, another Asian country that loves its isoflavones, hot flushes are rarely eported.
Red Clover is available as a dried herb, and in tablets, capsules, and tinctures.
To try it out, pour boiling water over two teaspoonfuls of dried Red Clover flowers. Cover, then steep for another ten minutes.

Skin Brushing Shown to have Amazing Benefits
Skin care is literally a billion dollar a year business.
Thousands of people are drawn in to buying creams, scrubs, soaps and oils every
day by the promise of younger, firmer, wrinkle free skin. Many of these
products do have their uses. They can stop the skin from becoming dry, sore and
cracked; many can even reduce acne and help smooth out fine lines. But none of
them can boast the all around cleansing benefits that are associated with the
age old practice of dry skin brushing.
The skin is the body's largest organ. It receives 1/3 of all the blood pumped
from the heart. It eliminates up to two pounds of waste acids a day and is
responsible for 1/4 of the body's detoxification. The skin is also the last
organ to receive nutrients but the first to show signs of any deficiency.
Simply put, the skin is one of the most important organs in the body and needs
caring for in the proper way. This is where dry skin brushing can have amazing
benefits.
The body is constantly creating new skin cells while shedding old ones at the
same time. Sometimes these old cells can cling to the surface of your skin
causing an uneven appearance as well as trapping bacteria and stopping the new
cells from breathing. These trapped bacteria will multiply and produce the
spots and bumps associated with acne. Dry skin brushing is the best way to
remove this old skin and leave new cells behind, giving you a healthy glow as
well as younger smoother looking skin.
Skin Brushing and Cellulite
It is thought that around 90% of women suffer from cellulite. The little
dimples that form on the thighs and buttocks are due to the accumulation of
fats, proteins and other waste products that are not being excreted from the
body efficiently. These unwanted products are usually carried out of the body
by the lymphatic system, which is the body's personal waste disposal unit. When
the lymphatic system isn't running smoothly it can cause many health and skin
problems, including cellulite. Dry skin brushing can help kick start the
lymphatic system by stimulating the lymph canals, which helps detoxify the
blood and reduces the toxic build up that can cause cellulite.
It is a simple practice that will only take five minutes while in the bath or
shower. But those five minutes could just be the secret to looking and feeling
younger.

FDA Scientists Warn About Bleeding Risk of Bayer's Blood-Thinning Drug
The FDA has publicly released documents from science reviewers
expressing concern over the blood-thinning drug rivaroxaban, marketed
by Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) as Xarelto in Canada
and Europe. The drug has yet to receive regulatory approval in the
United States, but an application is pending.
The pill,
introduced as a competitor to Sanofi-Aventis' injectable drug Lovenox
(enoxaparin), is indicated for once-a-day short term use in order to
prevent blood clots following hip- or knee-replacement surgeries.
A series of randomized clinical trials (RECORD) on a total of 6,183
participants found Xarelto to be just effective as Lovenox, if not more
so, but also that it was twice as likely to cause bleeding.
"The
evidence that administration of rivaroxaban (Xarelto) could lead to
bleeding events in significantly more patients relative to enoxaparin
amplifies [the] safety concern for rivaroxaban," FDA staff wrote.
Concerns
have also been raised over the possibility that Xarelto might increase
patients' risk of liver damage. One participant in the RECORD trials
died of liver toxicity. FDA staff noted that more long-term studies
would be needed to gain understanding of the drug's liver risks.
Two
days after the agency released its scientists' concerns, an FDA
advisory panel recommended approval of the drug for short-term use, and
in Europe and Canada. The panel acknowledged that Xarelto is more
likely to cause bleeding than Lovenox.
Approximately 800,000 hip- and knee-replacement surgeries take place in the United States every year, providing only a relatively small market for Xarelto or Lovenox. But analysts expect Bayer
and J&J to eventually seek approval for long-term use of the drug
for stroke prevention. According to analysts from Morgan Stanley, sales
of Xarelto for hip- and knee-replacements will likely peak at $200
million per year, yet Bayer has projected eventual annual sales of $2.6
billion for all uses.
