Adrenal Fatigue is the Root of Many Illnesses

The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and produce a number of hormones such as adrenalin, noradrenalin, cortisol and DHEA. These hormones make us feel motivated and alive, and they enable us to do the things we want to do and to deal with any stress we have in our lives. Unfortunately, modern day living often puts the adrenal glands under constant stress that must be regularly counteracted.

When we are put into a stressful position, the body releases adrenalin and nor-adrenalin to deal with the physical danger. This is also called the `fight or flight` response. Once the danger is over, the body should naturally go back to a relaxed state and the adrenal gland returns hormone levels back to normal.

Unfortunately in modern life we are continuously experiencing all sorts of stress for extended periods of time. This in turn causes the adrenal glands to continually pump out stress hormones. In the initial stages they will produce abnormally high levels of adrenaline, nor-adrenalin, cortisol and DHEA. Eventually, the adrenals will become fatigued if they are continually stimulated. This is the exhaustion stage of stress where eventually the adrenals will produce abnormally low levels of stress hormones; in this state, the body fails to adapt to a particular stress and we are tired, anxious and exhausted.

The Adrenals and Blood Sugar Balance
The adrenal glands and blood sugar levels go hand in hand. Our body must maintain blood sugar levels within a fairly narrow band. When we are stressed, our adrenalin causes stored glucose in our liver and muscles to be released, raising blood sugar levels, in order to feed cells, so they can respond with either `flight or fight.` If the glucose is not used up by cells, the body will have to release insulin to reduce blood sugar levels again. This in turn can cause them to fall too low. Low blood sugar can then stress the adrenals again, forcing them to release adrenalin which raises blood sugar levels back to normal again.

Blood sugar imbalances cause energy dips during the day, low energy, dizziness and irritability when not eating frequently, afternoon drowsiness, excess thirst and sugar cravings. More importantly, it stresses the adrenals and can lead to adrenal fatigue.

Common symptoms of low cortisol:
  • Symptoms associated with Blood sugar imbalances (hungry all the time, the need to snack, light-headed and jittery without food and so on)
  • Digestive problems
  • Poor immune system leading to frequent infections, and inflammatory symptoms.
  • Hormonal problems such as PMS, lack of sex drive, prostate problems.
  • Mental and physical fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleep problems and insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Low blood pressure
  • Waking too early in the morning

Specific symptoms of DHEA deficiency include:
  • Persisting fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Hypersensitivity to noise
  • Loss of libido
  • Dry eyes
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Loss of head hair, axial (armpit) hair, and pubic hair.

Cut out the following foods:
  • Sugar and all refined carbohydrates in food and drinks, as they create blood sugar imbalances which contribute to adrenal stress
  • Processed and refined foods as they can contain chemicals, which can deplete the body of nutrients, which are vital for health and wellbeing.
  • Cut down or cut out alcohol and caffeine as both can stimulate and stress the adrenals.

Increase the following foods:
  • Plenty of vegetables, beans and pulses for fibre, as this can help balance blood sugar. They are full of nutrients.
  • Protein to balance blood sugar levels and produce adrenalin. Health protein can include nuts, seeds, and quinoa.
  • Plenty of fruit and vegetables that contain bioflavonoids, which are anti-inflammatory and boost the immune system, which can become compromised by stress. They also contain vitamin C - vital for adrenal health.
  • Large amounts of the essential fatty acids as they support blood sugar balance and are anti-inflammatory. These foods include oily fish, linseeds, chia seeds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and green lipped mussels.

Lifestyle Suggestions Include:
  • Deal with stress. Reduce it as much as possible and find ways to work with it. These
  • stresses could be mental, physical, emotional or environmental.
  • Sufficient rest is also very important, not only sleep but relaxation and
  • enjoyment of life.
  • It is important to sit down to eat and view this as a relaxation time; eat food you enjoy and chew well.
  • Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage and walking in the fresh air are very important
  • More vigorous exercise may be useful to release tension, but when adrenals are fatigued you are better doing low and moderately low intensity exercise, which is enjoyable and does not stress the adrenals. Massage can bring the body into a more relaxed state.
  • Learn to have a good laugh!
Pranayama: Benefit from Deep Breathing

The modern day lifestyle can be very fast and furious leaving many people feeling depressed tired and basically unable to cope. While these symptoms are not good they are simply our body's way of telling us to slow down and to take a few deep breaths.

Most of us think that breathing is an involuntary act and that there is no right or wrong way to do it. But there is, and most of us do it wrong. Pranayama is a yoga breathing exercise that is used to prepare participants for meditation and to help them on their spiritual journey. It teaches us that we should take note of our breathing, and that we should use the full extent of our lungs. Basically it teaches us how to breathe properly.

The Pranayama exercise that yoga beginners tend to learn first is called the Three Part Breath or Dirga Pranayama. In ancient traditions it was thought best to perform the exercise lying down. This way the participants can really feel their breath flowing through their body, but it is not essential to feel the full effects of the exercise. It is called the three part breath because it is performed in three stages, first using the bottom of the lungs, then the middle and lastly the top. This means that the full capacity of the lungs is being used instead of the 20% that most of us scrape by on.

When we are young we naturally breathe this way, deeply and using all of our lungs. But as our lives become stressful due to work, financial pressures and kids our breathing tends to become fast and shallow. This means that our lungs do not fill up with enough oxygen and are therefore unable to distribute the optimum amount around our body. Many health problems ranging from heart disease to sleep disorders may in fact be due to what is known as oxygen starvation. We all know that our body needs oxygen to function properly. Our brain and muscles feed on it making us feel more alert and energized. Our lymphatic system, which is the system that rids the body of toxins, is controlled by the simple motion of breathing deeply.

The great thing about this type of deep Pranayama breathing is that it can be performed almost anywhere. It will help keep your mind calm and clear in any situation and done regularly it can give you an amazing sense of euphoria. This is because deep breathing is our built in defense against stress. It lowers your heart rate and blood pressure while easing muscle tension. So next time life seems to be getting on top of you just stop, take a step back, breathe deeply and try to use your lungs' full capacity. You will be amazed by the results.
FDA Trying to Censor Claims of Omega-3 Oils by Prohibiting Legal Content Claims

The FDA has proposed a rule that would prohibit food manufacturers from marketing any product as an "excellent source" of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Since 2004, the FDA has allowed "excellent source" claims on any foods containing at least 32 milligrams of DHA and EPA per serving. Under FDA guidelines, any food that supplies at least 20 percent of the recommended daily value of a nutrient may contain such a claim.

In late 2007, however, the FDA proposed a ban on such claims. According to the agency, there is no authoritative U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended daily allowance for EPA and DHA, making "excellent source" claims misleading. The agency also says that because most omega-3 research has focused on doses producing specific results rather than those leading to overall nutritional well-being, there is little data on how much EPA and DHA people should actually be consuming.

The 32 milligram threshold is based on the IOM's "adequate intake" estimate of 160 milligrams per day. Most researchers recommend that the recommended daily intake be set significantly higher, at 500 milligrams.

Because FDA rules say that labeling changes can only be implemented on Jan. 1 every two years, however, and also require that companies be given at least one year's advance notice, no changes to omega-3 nutritional claims could be implemented until Jan. 1, 2012.

According to omega-3 trade association the Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED), manufacturers are hoping that the FDA will issue an omega-3 nutritional recommendation before 2012, thereby bypassing the issue entirely. The GOEM already plans to petition the IOM to set an official recommended daily allowance for EPA and DHA.

"We're hoping that within three years we can convince them to revise reference intakes for EPA/DHA, which would then make this whole issue a mute point," said GOED's executive director, Adam Ismail.
Twelve Creative Ways to Use Coconut Oil

In the past several years, coconut oil has become a sort of rising star in the world of health food. More and more homes have a jar of organic extra virgin coconut oil on their pantry shelf. But coconut oil is more than a healthy cooking alternative. There are endless ways to use coconut oil that extend far beyond the occasional cookie or stir-fry. Here are twelve creative uses for a classic health food:

Colds and Sore Throats - Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that can help you recover from a cold. Mix it with warm tea and honey for a very soothing throat remedy.

Cuts and Scrapes - Coconut oil can be used as a topical cream for common cuts and scrapes, protecting against infection while conditioning the skin to heal faster. It may also prevent scarring.

Dandruff - Several times per week, coat your fingertips with coconut oil and massage it into your scalp for an easy dandruff cure. This is an effective yet gentle method, suitable for young children or babies with cradle cap, too.

Deodorant - You can use coconut oil by itself as a deodorant that leaves underarms feeling silky soft, or you can add baking soda and cornstarch for advanced odor protection.

Detoxification - There are many methods for detoxifying the body, but coconut oil is unique because it can provide energy while cleansing the body. One popular method is to take 1-2 tablespoon of coconut oil seven times per day for one to seven days to cleanse the body from toxins, impurities and candida.

Fungal Infections - Coconut oil contains strong antifungal agents, and can be used to treat fungal infections like athlete's foot, ringworm, thrush and vaginal yeast infections. You can use it internally and topically for these conditions.

Hair Conditioner - Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to your scalp and hair. Allow it to soak for several minutes and then wash as usual. There is no need to use other conditioners with this method, even after washing with shampoo.

Lip Balm - Lip moisturizers are filled with chemicals, and natural products are often pricey. If you need a moisturizer for your lips, try coconut oil in a commercial lip balm container.

Make-up Remover - Coconut oil is a very effective make-up remover, so you can toss out all the chemical-laden products from the drug store. It's also a natural moisturizer, so it won't cause dryness or irritation.

Skin Conditions - Since coconut oil is moisturizing, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory, it's a great natural remedy for all kinds of skin problems ranging from eczema to acne to diaper rash.

Sun screen - Coconut oil provides effective and natural sun protection without exposing your body to the toxic chemicals and metals in conventional sun block. Coconut oil protects against free radicals, which provides added protection against skin cancer.

Toothpaste - Mix an equal amount of coconut oil and baking soda for an all-natural, fluoride-free toothpaste. Add spearmint or peppermint oil with stevia for a fresh, sweet flavor.

As you can see, there is more to coconut oil that what meets the eye - or the frying pan!

Cinnamon is the Wonder Spice for Health and Wellbeing

Cinnamon is well known as the world's oldest spice. It has a beautiful warm aroma that makes it an inviting ingredient to add to food. In the past Cinnamon was seen as an expensive luxury that was used as an aphrodisiac, and as it was more expensive to buy than silver, many people simply used it as currency. It is a wonder spice for health and wellbeing.

Apart from its amazing taste and aroma that made it so popular for cooking cinnamon was also used by many physicians to treat colds, coughing and sore throats. Burning Cinnamon in your household was thought to cleanse the air and the people within. Roman Emperor Nero took this literally and after he murdered his wife he ordered a year's supply of cinnamon to be burnt to cleanse him of the crime.
While burning cinnamon may not actually be able to clean out your soul modern day research has found that this most ancient of spices is very good for your health.

Cinnamon And Diabetes
Studies in to the effects of cinnamon on people with diabetes are at this stage very minimal. But the extremely positive results have the medical community screaming for larger trials. In one study conducted in the Malmo University Hospital in Sweden, results showed that eating a meal laced with cinnamon actually lowered the food's effects on the blood's sugar levels. The test only included 14 people half of whom were given normal rice pudding while the other half had rice pudding with cinnamon. They repeated the test again at a later date and came up with the same results. The researchers led by Joanna Hlebowicz believe that cinnamon may slow down part of the digestion process giving the body more time to break up the carbohydrates, therefore lessening the post-meal blood-glucose concentration.

Cinnamon And Arthritis
Another test conducted in Copenhagen seems to have found that cinnamon mixed with honey can significantly reduce the pain associated with arthritis. The study was conducted on 200 arthritis suffers who were all given a honey and cinnamon mixture before they ate breakfast. All of the patients tested reported some improvement in their pain management while 73 of those seemed to be relieved of all pain within a month. The results have astounded the medical community and brought hope to the thousands of chronic arthritis sufferers in the world.

While these tests are by no means conclusive, anything that may produce a positive result in the battle against these diseases without any nasty side effects is definitely worth trying.
Manage Morning Sickness Naturally

You've been feeling a little "off" for a few weeks and think you may have the flu. But lo and behold, over the next month or so, you discover you have another reason for your "off" feeling. You are going to be a mother! After the shock wears off and you begin to see being pregnant as the wonderful thing it is, you wonder if you'll be able to survive the morning sickness you are experiencing. Remembering that morning sickness doesn't last the whole nine months isn't much help as you sit with your head held over the waste basket, feeling more than a little green. Well, take heart. There are many things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness without the harmful effects of drugs.

Morning sickness is caused by the hormonal and chemical changes your body is experiencing, as the new little life that is inside of you begins to claim your uterus as his/her own space and starts to grow. Not all women experience morning sickness and for those who do, it may very well differ from pregnancy to pregnancy. Some women say that with each succeeding baby, they experience less morning sickness. Normally, morning sickness will last for no more than the first three months. It's during this time, in a pregnant woman's life, that you hear of them craving certain and sometimes unusual things. With this sickness, comes an inability to eat normally. But don't worry. Towards the middle and end of your pregnancy, you'll definitely be eating for two! Here are some natural things you can do to help manage the nausea caused by morning sickness.

You may find that strong odors affect you in a negative way. So do all you can to avoid bothersome odors, even if you need to exit a room or an area that smells offensive to you. It could even be a scent that you liked before you became pregnant. Many times, getting fresh air will help.

Instead of eating three main meals a day, eat several small meals and snack on fruit throughout the day. Having something in your stomach seems to really combat the nausea. Try using acupressure. Special sea bands are sold in health food stores that help curb that "green: feeling caused by both morning and motion sickness." Place these bands three-quarters of an inch down your wrist. They have done wonders for some. Some women claim that going and having acupuncture done by a reputable doctor is remarkable. Be sure he or she knows you are pregnant and the reason for your visit. Try adding oils made of natural grapefruit, orange, mandarin or lime to your bathwater. There's an ingredient in citrus that seems to help overcome the feelings of nausea. Pour yourself a cup of ginger tea or purchase an all natural ginger ale. Ginger has been known for centuries for its healing powers and is especially great for an upset stomach.

Enjoy the time you have with your growing baby and be proud that you have chosen to use natural remedies during your pregnancy. Stay hydrated by sipping drinks throughout the day. Get the rest you deserve and allow others to wait on you if you aren't feeling up to par. Relax and let nature take its course. You'll soon be a Mother!
