Hibiscus Tea Significantly Lowers Blood Pressure
naturalnews.com
Drinking hibiscus tea can significantly reduce blood pressure among
people with elevated risks of cardiovascular or kidney disease,
according to a new study presented at the annual conference of the
American Heart Association.
High blood pressure is a dangerous
health condition that triples the risk of heart attack and is
responsible for 60 percent of all strokes. The condition is very common
in the developed world; one in three people in the United Kingdom, for
example, are considered to suffer from high blood pressure.
Researcher Diane McKay and colleagues conducted the study on 65 people between the ages of 30 and 70 whose high blood pressure levels placed them at increased risk of kidney disease, heart attack and stroke. Participants were assigned to drink either hibiscus tea or a placebo three times per day for six weeks.
At the end of the study, blood
pressure levels had fallen an average of 7.2 percent in the hibiscus
group, compared with only 1.3 percent in the placebo group. Some
patients in the hibiscus group actually experienced a 13.2 percent
reduction.
"Hibiscus is now the most promising herb for treating
blood pressure," said alternative medicine expert Andrew Weill.
"Studies have found that people who drank two cups of hibiscus daily
for four weeks lowered their diastolic blood pressure by 12 percent --
results similar to those for common blood pressure medication."
Scientists
do not know exactly what compounds in hibiscus contribute to its
protective effect, but the flowers are known to contain chemicals known
as anthocyanins, which have been shown to improve the functioning of blood vessels and strengthen the protein collagen, which helps give structure to cells and tissues, including blood vessels.
Anthocyanins
and other components of hibiscus tea are also known to function as
antioxidants, cleansing the body of dangerous free radicals that can
have been linked to heart disease, cancer and the symptoms of aging.
Beverages
made or flavored from the flowers of the plan Hibiscus sabdariffa are
popular in many African, Asian and Caribbean countries.

Chamomile Tea Lowers Blood Sugar in Diabetics by 25% naturalnews.com
A common and popular herbal remedy may be able to help diabetics
control their blood sugar and prevent serious complications, according
to a study conducted by researchers from Aberystwyth University in
Wales and the University of Toyama in Japan, and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
"These
results clearly suggested that daily consumption of chamomile tea with
meals could contribute to the prevention of the progress of
hyperglycemia and diabetic complications," the researchers wrote
Researchers fed rats with Type 2 diabetes a chamomile-mimicking extract every day for three weeks, and observed a subsequent 25 percent drop in the animals' blood sugar levels. Based on these findings, the researchers believe that taking chamomile tea with meals might lead to similar benefits in humans.
Type
2 diabetes occurs when the body loses sensitivity to the
sugar-regulating hormone insulin, leading to a dangerous rise in blood sugar levels. Over time, elevated blood sugar can destroy bodily tissues, leading to complications like diabetic neuropathy, blindness, and damage to the kidneys or circulatory system.
The
researchers found that chamomile appeared to reduce the activity of an
enzyme called aldose reductase, which plays an important role in sugar metabolism. Aldose reductase helps turn glucose into sorbitol, a different sugar. In diabetics, the buildup of sorbitol has been directly linked to neuropathy and blindness,
as this sugar moves across cell membranes less freely than glucose and
thus has a tendency to build up in nerve and eye tissue.
Chamomile,
also known as manzanilla, has long been used as a home remedy to reduce
stress, improve sleep, and alleviate complaints from colds to digestive
upset to menstrual cramps. It is believed to contain more antioxidants
than nearly any other natural dietary source.
"It is quite fascinating," lead researcher Robert Nash said. "It seems to be doing a lot of different things all at once."

Break Out the Coconut Oil: It is Good for You
If you could make one change in your current diet which would
positively affect all other areas of your life, would you do it? If you
knew that just three tablespoons of a saturated fat would positively
benefit your current health condition, would you take those three
tablespoons of medicine?
The Secret Fountain of Youth The
secret Fountain of Youth, of health and longevity, has been located.
No, it`s not actually water, but the fountain-like tree of the Coconut
Palm or Cocos nucifera, which is a member of the Arecaceae family. This
family also includes the famous acai fruit, dates, and other drupe
fruits which are popular in tropical and subtropical regions.
Many
common products and foods are derived from the palm family. In fact,
all through history palms have become symbols of life, victory, peace,
fertility, and sustenance. The Coconut Palm, in particular, is often
called the tree of life in the many cultures which rely on it for
sustenance. Virtually every part of the Coconut Palm is used for
something - from roof thatch to boats, from clothing to firewood, from
garden mulch to a variety of culinary uses. In Sanskrit the name is
kalpa vriksha, which means "the tree which provides all the necessities
of life." While those in Malay refer to it as pokok seribu guna, or
"tree of a thousand uses." In the Philippines, the coconut is
affectionately termed "The Tree Of Life."
Wherein Coconut is The Main Course If
a person were to take a look at the countries in which coconut oil and
milk were staples of the diet, they would notice that those who have
not adopted any part of a western diet are beautiful and robust. If you
were to take a trip to Sri Lanka, where coconut products are used in
every meal and the population consumes an average of 120 coconuts per
year, you would notice the health and fitness of the inhabitants. A
little more research would show you that merely one or two deaths of
every 1,000 are contributed to heart disease, compared to heart disease
in America, which contributes to nearly half of all deaths.
Other
countries which rely heavily on coconut include most parts of India,
the Philippines, and most islands of the Pacific. You would notice that
these people who have not adopted the modern Western diet - which
contains unsaturated margarine and vegetable oils - and who consume
this saturated fat of the coconut oil also have low instances of any
major illnesses. Heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood
pressure, obesity and many other common complaints of the Western World
are virtually nonexistent. Their secret is coconut oil.
When
people of these regions have adopted the Western diet, researchers have
found that the instances of these diseases became comparably close to
that of Americans. In fact, a major study was performed on the remote
islands of Pukapuka and Tokelau. The entire populations of these
islands took part in the study. Before the study, coconut oil, milk,
and meat was the main staple in the diet contributing to 60% or more of
the populations` daily intake of calories from fat, while the American
Heart Association only recommends that up to 30% of daily calories
consumed come from fat and that no more than 10% of that fat should be
saturated.
Despite this recommendation, those populations were
consuming 50% of their calories are from saturated fat from coconut
products. Yet, these people showed no evidence of heart disease, high
cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, or any other immunological or
degenerative disease common in the Western World. In fact,
atherosclerosis and arthritis were not even heard of!
When
researchers had half the population in the study begin eating a Western
diet, they began to develop the disease found in the Western world
within days to weeks of adopting the new Western diet. When they
returned to their traditional coconut-based diet, the diseases
disappeared.
The Right Kind of Fat Make no mistake; this
article is not discussing hydrogenated coconut oil. Refined and/or
hydrogenated coconut oil, just like other refined or hydrogenated oils,
should never be consumed. Refined or hydrogenated oils of any kind
contain harmful metals and toxins as well as nonmetabolizable and
indigestible fats, which promote diseases. When you hear reports about
studies which claim that coconut oil does raise cholesterol levels and
promote heart disease, they are leaving out the crucial point that the
study was done with hydrogenated coconut oil.
No, this article
is discussing pure, unrefined, organic, coconut oil. Dozens of studies
over the past few decades have shown that natural coconut oil, the
organic extra virgin kind, has no adverse effects on cholesterol
levels. In fact, researchers have found quite the opposite is true. The
fact is if unrefined coconut oil was the cause of disease, then these
countries which rely heavily on it would show evidence of disease. In
reality, quite the opposite is true.
Bad Publicity Unfortunately,
the fallacy of the reported negative research has slipped up many
reporters and by and large the misinformed writers, healthcare
professionals, and the public. While the reports were accurate, the
conveyed information left out that refined and hydrogenated coconut oil
was used in the studies, which developed diseases in the participants.
This problem is compounded because everybody recites and repeats each
others` false statements. If the public and health care professionals
were only to read the new research and the full reports, they would
find that they were in the dark ages of nutritional knowledge. So, if
you hear about negative aspects of coconut oil and product, realize
that the person is misinformed and kindly do some research of your own.
On
the other hand, research performed with unrefined coconut oils resulted
in some amazing findings. People who consumed the unrefined and
non-hydrogenated coconut oils were healthier at the end of the study
than those who consumed the refined and hydrogenated coconut and/or
vegetable oils or a low fat diet. Manufacturers have become so pleased
with the health benefits of coconut oil that they have begun to use it
as a "secret" ingredient in their baby formulas and adult nutrition
formulas used in hospitals for tube feeding. Research has now confirmed
that coconut oil is one of the most nutritious and healthful foods
available. It is recommended to everyone, including those with health
problems, to include unrefined coconut oil into their diets daily.
The Miracle Non-Nut While
coconuts are called nuts, they are not actually nuts. Rather, they are
the monocot seed of the palm family. It is rare that anyone has
allergies or adverse reactions to the coconut. So rare, in fact, that
none have been reported. However, many report the positive reactions
they have felt from the coconut. Those who have diabetes have reported
lower blood sugar counts. Those which have high cholesterol have
reported lowered cholesterol. Those who experience lethargy or low body
temperatures have reported their energy levels rising and their body
temperature normalizing.
Even those experiencing common
addictions have reported quitting smoking and drinking without even
realizing it. Those who suffer from obesity have reported a reduction
in food cravings and astounding weight-loss of around 2 pounds per
week. They claim that the weight melts right off!
How much do
you need to take to receive health benefits? The recommended daily
dosage is three tablespoons. Of course, you can feel free to take more
than that. Coconut oil is heat-stable oil. You can cook with it, fry
with it, bake with it and even eat it right out of the jar. It is a
delicious butter replacement and melts easily onto your toast. It adds
a delicious, light flavor to everything it complements.
Since it
is solid at room temperature and liquid at body temperature, it is
shelf stable for months, even years, in the right conditions. Unlike
other oils, even olive oil, it does not develop cancer-causing
chemicals at moderately high heat. So, go ahead, replace your butter
and cooking oil. You can even replace your favorite skin cream and
lotion. Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer and provides excellent
health benefits both outside and in.

Algae Can Save the World From Global Warming While Producing Biofuel
Scientists at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom are conducting
research into ways to use algae to not only remove global
warming-causing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but also in the
synthesis of new biofuels that do not compete with food production.
Algae
is being eagerly investigated for its ability to remove vast quantities
of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, turning it into oxygen. It was
this process that originally led to the creation of the Earth's current
atmospheric composition and allowed for life as we know it. It was also
the decomposition of algae on the ocean floor that eventually led to many of today's existing petroleum deposits.
"So
we are harvesting sunshine directly using algae, then we are extracting
that stored energy in the form of oil from the alga and then using that
to make fuels and other non-petroleum based products," said Steve Skill
of Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
Plymouth scientists are not the
only ones working on turning algae into viable fuel. Companies trying
to get into the game include Sapphire Energy, Origin Oil, BioCentric
Energy and PetroAlgae. Japan Airlines has already test-flown a plane
fueled with a combination of biofuels (some derived from algae) and conventional jet fuel.
Part
of the appeal of algae biofuel is the same as that of other biofuels --
because plants absorb carbon dioxide while they grow, they are thought
to make up for the carbon dioxide emissions when fuels derived from
them are burned. Algae has the added benefit of growing well in places
unsuitable for human food production, this making it less likely to
affect food prices as corn-derived ethanol has been accused of doing.
It also grows 20-30 times faster than most food crops.
Scientists
from Plymouth and elsewhere are also investigating algae for its
ability to absorb the carbon dioxide given off by the burning of fossil
fuels. Brazilian company MPX Energia is already planning to start using
algae to capture emissions from a coal plant as soon as 2011. |

Baking Soda Boosts Athletic Performance
Baking soda can indeed increase athletes' speed, according to a pair of
recent studies giving confirmation to a belief that scientists have
long been skeptical of.
For years, professional athletes have
sworn by "soda doping," the practice of taking baking soda before
competitive sporting event in order to improve speed and endurance.
In
the first study, researchers from Loughborough University gave baking
soda to nine swimmers, finding that eight of them reduced their time in
a 200 meter race by an average of 1.5 seconds.
"At the last
Olympics, the top four swimmers in the men's 200 meter freestyle were
separated by just 1.4 seconds," lead researcher Jonathan Folland said.
"So, in theory, it could be the difference between winning a medal and
not."

Another Blow to Magic Bullet Drugs: Statins Impair Brains
Statin drugs can reduce soaring cholesterol levels, according to
countless ads touting these supposed "wonder" drugs, that means they
are brimming with health benefits because they lower the risk of
cardiovascular disease. The problem is a host of side effects from eye
problems and muscle pain to heart arrhythmias and liver disorders have
been linked to these widely prescribed medications. Now comes research
by an Iowa State University scientist that strongly suggests statins
also could be robbing brains of thinking power and memory by doing
exactly what they are supposed to do -- reduce cholesterol.
It
turns out that statins inhibit not only the liver from making
cholesterol but may also block the brain from making cholesterol.
That's a serious consequence, according to Yeon-Kyun Shin, a biophysics
professor in the department of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular
biology at Iowa State, because cholesterol is vital for healthy and
optimum brain function. "If you deprive cholesterol from the brain,
then you directly affect the machinery that triggers the release of
neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters affect the data-processing and
memory functions. In other words, how smart you are and how well you
remember things," said Dr. Shin in a statement to the media.
In a study published in the February issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
Dr. Shin and colleagues tested the activity of the
neurotransmitter-release processes of brain cells without cholesterol
present to see how well they functioned. Then cholesterol was placed in
the system and the scientists measured the transmitter function again.
The result? Cholesterol increased the neurotransmitter function by five
times.
"Our study shows there is a direct link between
cholesterol and the neurotransmitter release. We know exactly the
molecular mechanics of what happens in the cells. Cholesterol changes
the shape of the protein to stimulate thinking and memory," Dr. Shin
said in the press statement. "If you try to lower the cholesterol by
taking medicine that is attacking the machinery of cholesterol
synthesis in the liver, that medicine goes to the brain too. And then
it reduces the synthesis of cholesterol which is necessary in the
brain."
However, just because cutting down on cholesterol in the
brain may mess up memory and cognitive skills, it doesn't mean that
more cholesterol in the blood will make you more intelligent and able
to remember more facts. That's because no matter how much cholesterol
is in your diet, the cholesterol in the blood doesn't cross over the
blood brain barrier.
In addition, by loading a diet with
saturated fat from animal products and junk food, too much low-density
lipoprotein (LDL), often called "bad" cholesterol, can build up in
cells and cause hardening of arterial walls contributing to strokes and
heart disease -- unless you have enough high-density lipoprotein (HDL),
or "good" cholesterol, to keep LDL out of cells. Fortunately, there are
many proven ways to lower the "bad" artery logging cholesterol without
resorting to statin drugs. For example, the Mayo Clinic web site notes
garlic, ground flaxseed, barley and artichoke extract may be helpful in
keeping cholesterol levels in healthy balance.
