Investigate Engineers Week!

Ever wonder how narrow stalks support large loads? For engineers, such design questions are elemental, Watson. To mark  National Engineers Week (Feb. 20-26), have your Sherlocks fabricate paper cups--without glue or staples. See if their theories hold water! Summer is a great time to explore engineering; check out these programs for students and teachers, including one sponsored by ASEE . 


Activity: Paper Cup Challenge


papercups1In this activity, students in grades 5 through 8 take an everyday product and try to make it better. They're challenged to redesign the classic paper cup so that no tape, glue, or staples are necessary, reducing production costs and the cost of individual paper cups. Each pair of students will be given a stack of paper to design a new paper container that can hold water for a short period of time.

K-12 News: Top AP Science, Math Scholars Win Awards 

ap winnersMore public high school students are taking and succeeding on Advanced Placement exams compared with a decade ago, the College Board reports. The Siemens Foundation recently awarded $2,000 scholarships to top achievers from each state who scored the most 5s on AP science and mathematics tests ranging from Biology to Physics C.
