The fate of 33 Chilean miners trapped in a collapsed mine tested the ingenuity -- and the nerves -- of engineers from the U.S. space agency NASA. They advised Chile's Navy on design of the capsule that hoisted the miners nearly a half mile to safety last week. While often summoned in rescue efforts, engineers play a key role in preventing emergencies -- by making products and machinery safe.
