TEENS CREATING BRIGHTER TOMORROWS |
| Over the past few years, HisHands2Go has witnessed thousands of volunteers filtering through New Orleans on mission trips- departing with a new or deeper understanding of serving and loving others. We looked for ways to spread this opportunity of growth to the locals of the city, but without much success... until now!
HH2G has recently joined forces with a student-led group of volunteers from Greater Gentilly High School (9th Ward) to further the rebuilding efforts. A few HH2G staff members have been volunteering in that school, and were recently invited to act as sponsors for an extra-curricular volunteer group- Teens Creating Brighter Tomorrows. The group was envisioned and organized by two young ladies with a desire to make a difference in their community, and in the lives of their school-mates. The students have a two-fold plan of impact: 1) reconstructing homes, and 2) initiating their own version of Big Brother Big Sister.
This particular school is structured in such a way that the students are given early dismissals on certain days every month- it is on these afternoons that the students will volunteer in various ways in the community. They may load up on a bus and head to a blighted home to continue the work begun by the thousands of volunteers that have given time, sweat, and much love to the city of New Orleans; or they might spend the afternoon with a young person of their community- teaching them life skills and giving them the much needed gift of quality time and positive attention.
HH2G will organize and oversee the reconstructive work projects, and Elan Ministries will be involved in the mentoring efforts. As this volunteer group develops and matures, the students will be presented with a larger variety of opportunities to impact their community in a positive manner. HH2G and Elan Ministries counts it a great privilege to be sponsors of activites that will teach the leaders of tomorrow the importance of loving and serving their neighbors!

WORK PROJECT UPDATE...
Emma & Edward Richards
~ 2040 Clouet St. ~ |
|
The dynamic family who resided on Clouet St. prior to Hurricane Katrina is closer than ever to being back in their home! Emma, 65, and Edward, 92, have spent the last 4 years in Baton Rouge working, raising grandchildren, and venturing back to the Big Easy for a visit as often as possible. The family joins St. Luke A/G for Sunday worship from time to time, always ready to offer praise to God for his provision and care for them. Their joy is contagious!
HisHands2Go picked up the Clouet work project in January of 2008. The house was gutted, but in dire need of floor replacement, a new roof, mold remediation, termite treatment, and framing. Through the diligent work of HH2G volunteers from all over the country, this home has undergone major surgery, and now awaits just a few final pieces of sheetrock. That sheetrock will need mud, tape, and sanding, then it's time to paint!
Time continues to stretch on without a promised date of re-entry for the Richards, but instead of discouragement, Emma & Edward continue to express their humble gratitude for all of the love and hard-work that countless volunteers have poured into their home. HH2G hopes to have the Richards family back in their home by summer 2010. For those volunteers who will be joining us after the holidays and during spring break, you might be putting the final touches on this home!
HH2G has a list of folks like Emma & Edward Richards who are still waiting to return to the place they call home. Our mission is to see as many homeowners as possible get back into their homes... but we need VOLUNTEERS to make it a reality! If you would like to get involved in the rebuilding process, contact us today! |

"Is it seriously October!?" exclaimed Suzanne as she examined the trees lining Franklin Ave. The limbs of the beautiful live oaks sprawled over the street, creating a tunnel of branches and leaves. A mid-westerner to the core, Suzanne sighed as she scanned the trees for just one colorful leaf... juuust one. Green. Nothing but green for miles. Oh well, she thought as she continued towards home, I guess you can't have it all. A chuckle escaped her as she recalled the Facebook statuses of her northern friends over the past few weeks talking about the cold, rainy weather plaguing their enjoyment of this lovely time of year. A prayer of gratitude flew up as she slipped on her sunglasses and cranked the A/C to full-blast...
