ESC Communicators meet in Denver |
DENVER, CO - Communication Directors from the Provinces of the English-Speaking Conference of the Order recently met for the first time as a group in Denver on July 29-31, 2008. The meeting was organized by Friar Thomas Washburn, Executive Secretary of the ESC and Director of Communications for our Province, and Ms. Jocelyn Thomas, Director of Communication for Holy Name Province, at the request of the Conference to open dialogue on communication issues and explore the possibility of becoming a Committee of Experts of the ESC. In attendance along with Tom and Jocelyn were Ms. Toni Cashnelli of St. John Baptist Province, Friar Patrick McCormack of Assumption BVM Province, Friar John Summers, and Ms. Ali Packard of St. Barbara Province, and Friar Benet Fonck of Sacred Heart Province. Over the course of the meeting, members shared the efforts of the respective provinces in the area of communications, giving samples of publications and web sites and explaining their province's approach to exchanging ideas in order to share the Franciscan message. Though there was divergence in the content, methods, and tools of communications, the ESC communicators had a oneness of mind in objectives, plan of action, and hopes for getting out the word. The four objectives that surfaced were building the bonding among friars, accomplishing evangelization, promoting vocations, and serving development. The plan of action involved more collaboration between the communications, development, JPIC, and vocation offices within a province. The hope for communications seemed to be more effective efforts in the area of public relations. The communicators also discussed the sources of their information for publications, like asking for anecdotes from the friars on a certain topic, featuring a profile of the life and ministry of a living friar, setting up within the province a network of local correspondents, or checking blogs or You-Tube or Facebook for messages or ideas from friars. The meeting was very helpful to all gathered and the group decided to petition the ESC for incorporation as a Committee of Experts. The next gathering will be at Serra Retreat in Malibu, California, on August 17-20, 2009.

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS - Friars were shocked to hear last week of the sudden death of our brother, Friar Peter M. Walsh (57), who died Tuesday afternoon, July 29, at the Honduras Medical Center in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Peter Michael, the son of John Joseph and Julia Hauerslev Walsh, was born in Newark, NJ on July 14, 1951. He was received into the novitiate on August 15, 1974. He made his first profession on August 16, 1975 and was admitted to solemn vows on August 16, 1980. Peter was ordained priest on November 12, 1982 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beverly, MA.
Fr. Peter graduated from Saint Francis Seminary, Andover, in 1970; Immaculate Conception Seminary, Troy, in 1974; and from Saint John Seminary, Brighton, in 1980. Following his ordination to the priesthood, Peter served as associate pastor at Saint John the Evangelist Church in Beverly, MA, at Our Lady of Peace, Brooklyn, and at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Derry.
Fr. Peter was appointed to the Curia Staff in 1995, generously assisting wherever needed, particularly in the Treasurer's Office because of his computer skills In 2002 he was appointed to the staff of our retreat center in Andover, and on November 12, 2004, Peter accepted an obedience to serve as guardian and vice-rector of the Instituto San Francisco in Tegucigalpa.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 1, at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, Manhattan, with a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, with interment at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside. Approxiamtely 25 friars attended the funeral Mass.
In his homily, Provincial Minister Robert Campagna said, "Peter was 53 years old, 33 years a Franciscan, 26 years a Franciscan-priest. Peter's life was common to that of any and every friar-priest: he celebrated mass and preached, was minister of the sacraments and gave spiritual direction, involved himself in the life of the Order and Province --offering his special talent for and expertise with modern technology, especially computers. "Peter began his ultimate journey into God and eternity -- while celebrating Mass: The circumstances wished by every priest, but denied to most of us. Dressed in his Franciscan habit and priestly vestments, Father Peter began his ultimate journey into God and eternity - how marvelous! and what a sign for us, if we know how to see!! "Hidden in the Sacramentary of the Roman Missal is an alternative prayer that I want to paraphrase and make our own, this morning, for Peter, The prayer goes this way:
Lord God of mercy
May the Mass
we now offer for Peter
your servant and priest Bring him forgiveness and life For throughout his priestly life he offered this sacrifice to you Indeed on the very day
when you began
to call him to yourself. Peter, may you now rest in the peace of Jesus Christ."
Friars are reminded to offer suffrages for every deceased friar of the province, professed or novice. In particular, each priest shall offer the Eucharist twice.
Father, we entrust our brother, Fr. Peter, to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life; now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace for ever. |
